My fiance just passed her hunting and firearms course, she is only 5' 1". She has held my 12ga 870 and it is way too long for her. I am looking at picking up a 20ga 870 but I do not like the youth models because they are all sold with a 21" barrel, which is not ideal for longer swings on pass shooting birds. My thought was to get an 870 with a 26" or 28" barrel and chopping 1in off the stock and re mounting the recoil pad, but will it fit properly?
You may want to look at the ATI stocks. They are adjustable and have a pistol grip. They go from 13" down to 9 1/2" I think with nothing more the the press of a lever.

Just cut down the stock and get a grind to fit pad should be some videos on YouTube to help you I did it with a 20ga 870 for my wife.
If you are only cutting an inch you might not notice the pad sticking out a tiny bit. Before you cut the stock, take a long thin drill bit and extend the pad screw holes deeper. Then you will be able to find them after you cut. Makes it just a little easier to put the pad back on. Then decide if you want to grind it down a tad. A good Dremel type tool should be all you need, just go easy.
Pad will probably not fit – what I did w a 20ga I cut down was get a good pachmayer pad (lebarons) and shape it with a belt sander (for the rough fit) and then hand sand for the final. Pachmayer or limbsaver pads are much better than factory (esp Rem) and your wife/GF will appreciate a better recoil pad. It was not that hard to do just have to be patient
They also sell 13 and 12 inch lop stocks.
What about buying a 20 ga. 870, then picking up a youth stock? I know they used to sell them in Bass Pro at one time. Actually they're available in 12 ga now according to the Remington website

She is just starting out, so I am hoping to get a used 20ga and have her shoot that.
Ideally a good recoil pad and a 12ga at some point, but I don't want to spend too much money until we find something that works for her and her arms.
I was thinking about a double as well for her, a little shorter to her body but then I need 2 guns as we hunt deer with a shotgun and the doubles are not known for accuracy with slugs from 2 barrels.
The best part using a double is you have an option, slug or buckshot. I know there are many against it (buckshot) but up close like its meant for it is great. When I have my slug gun (pump) and the deer sneak in too close I wait for them to move off. Find too much damage with the slug up close. Gotta see what the gun likes for accuracy. I also have an O/U and have no problems out to 80yds with brenneke slugs. Put on a fibre optic sight and things got better. Most doubles only have a bead.Quote:

We hunt open areas in a controlled hunt, at minimum iron sights that can be adjusted is what work best there. I know some guns shoot straight with slugs but a lot do not, the adjustment is nice.
I have a SxS 16ga and love it, a nice OU would be nice for her I know, but 1 gun for now, if she gets into it then my pocket book may get smaller, ha ha.
Just buy a "grind to fit" pad. Cut the stock, trace around the end of the stock onto the new pad, take it to a belt sander and have at it. Finish up with a light sanding by hand.
