I've read through the reviews on all my normal sites and just thought I would get the opinion of people here. Strongly looking into the Tikka t3 lite stainless laminate in .270. It will be used on everything from coyote to deer and maybe moose. Any thoughts on this model? Thanks in advance guys and gals.
My buddy has a Tikka T3 Light in 300 win mag. I have shot it and it is a very nice gun. Very accurate. His is stainless/synthetic. He is very happy.
No brainer. One of the best values on the market and the .270 will handle everything you mention. Put a 3x9 scope on it and you're good to go.
Excellent choice I have one in 30-06 and it's a tack driver I put a bushnell 4200 elite 2.5-10 on it and love it very smooth bolt nice to carry and well balanced I have other guns I like but my tikka is so accurate it's my favorite I carry it for most big game hunts.
Only down side is it kicks alot harder than other 30-06 s I've shot due to it being 1.5-3 lbs lighter than most wood stocked guns not really a big deal in 30-06/270 but I know guys that have them in 338 and they say not much fun to dump a box through lol

I have 2 one in 30 06 and one 300 wsm. I love them both . Very accurate and smooth. I recommend Tikka rifles but I don't have the light models. A little to much kick for me . I don't mind a 6 lbs gun.
Buddies .22 with stainless is tack driver as well. super smooth and nice trigger pull.
Buy that gun and you will not be disappointed! I've been through 3 T3s and I've never been more happy with a gun! 4 out of 6 of us in our moose group use or have used a Tikka. Best gun for the money on the market!
They are popular rifles with many fans and shoot well. My beef with Tikka is that they are overpriced for the craftsmanship you get.
They production run all long actions and then pin to create the short action rather than produce a short action.
I have no big issue with that except it seems underhanded and the savings should be reflected in a reduced price. But it's not.
The bottom metal is plastic as is the mag, again not a big deal except again Tikka should pass the savings to the consumer rather than price their cheaper production and craftmanship above other quality made products. But they don't. Remember if they really wanted to save weight, they would use alum. not plastic. Again a cost cutting measure, but not one reflected in a reduced price reflecting the reduced quality.
Last but not least is the plastic bolt shroud. This is a deal breaker for me as I reload and shoot reloads. If any case(reload or not) turns loose in the chamber the debris is supposed to be stopped by the bolt shroud and possibly thru the magazine well.
Replacement bolt shrouds in metal(like everyone else's bolt)are available as an aftermarket. Again, Tikka should reduce the retail price they are selling these rifles for based on the shortcuts taken.

My brother in law has a couple of Tikka rifles. One is a .308 in an older model (595 or 695 maybe?) and one in .300 win mag in a T3.
They are very accurate and the bolt is slick as butter, but I have to agree somewhat with skypilot, they are a little expensive considering some of the cheaper parts.
If I was in the market for one, I would keep an eye out for a good used older model. You don't see many for sale though...must be a reason for that.
I own 5 Tikkas. Two .22-250, .243, .308. 300winmag
two in blued synthetic, Two in stainless synthetic and one in Stainless laminate.
All these guns I have the trigger tuned down to 2lbs (one trigger screw adjusted with wrench supplied with gun) All guns shoot 1" or less MOA and they are my main go to guns. Only reason I have two .22-250's is because I bought the blued one and I use it for coyotes all the time, But found a deal on stainless I just couldn't pass up. They are my favorite guns for the money. Before I shot a Tikka Remington 700's were my favorite.
Have a 6.5x55 blue version and I think I paid 680 plus tax which is not expensive.Quote:

Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially to another when both metals are in electrical contact and immersed in an electrolyte. This same galvanic reaction is exploited in primary batteries to generate an electrical voltage.
Well, the tikka came home with me after a trip to Toronto. Went to the Sportmen Show (wasn't impressed), then went to Sail and couldn't leave without it. Shot a few off this afternoon, but the search for rings and a scope started today. Looking into Vortex, Nikon, Redfield, and some low end Leupold. I'm thinking 3-9 or a 4-12x50. Suggestions around $300?
I'd add Bushnell Elite to the list you already have. Nothing really wrong with any of the brands you have already listed.
None of your scope choices are bad. I feel a 3x9 is plenty of magnification unless the game is long range varmint hunting.
Bushnell should have been on that list too. Lots of research and shopping around to be done. The rifle will be used mainly for deer and moose, but the odd coyot may get a look. 300 yards would be my absolute max range.

Try using steel screws in an aluminium boat. Rainwater is acidic = electrolyte. Rain mixes with CO2 in the atmosphere making carbonic acid.Quote:

There are a lot of steel screws in my aluminum boat, but they are stainless, so it's not a problem.
I think the problem with steel/aluminum corrosion requires moisture and quite a bit of time.
I have a late '70's Winchester auto and a late '90's browning auto. No aluminum / steel corrosion on them... and they get cleaned once a year, when I put them away.
My Beretta doesn't, it's German silver.

You're sure they're aluminium? If you're waterfowling or doing hunting in the rain, there's your moisture as well as when you bring a cold gun indoors - condensation.Quote:

That being said there are many instances of guns/boats/trailers etc where aluminum and stainless are used together successfully. Like I posted, nothing terribly wrong with the Tikka manufacturing process, they, IMO, are overcharging the public on quality and craftsmanship by selling an inexpensively made gun at a higher relative price. If they wanted to save weight, they could have used alum. rather than plastic, so cost (to themselves) was likely the only reason for it. If one is aware of the facts and chooses to buy a Tikka, nothing wrong with that.
I do like the fact that Tikka "seems" to have more left hand models available, at least in Canada, which I think is a plus.
I have several firearms from the days when there was no plastic on guns or cars. I have no visible issues with alum./steel contact either, although I do understand the electrochemical process.
I too have firearms with large amounts of alum. in steel contact. Such alum. receivers, trigger guards, etc.
I stand corrected Werner. They must use a dielectric connection/coating somewhere. We do that in heating piping when transitioning from steel to copper but using brass dielectric unions or brass valves or fittings.Quote:

This thread took a turn that I didn't see coming, lol. No problems though, I got the info I wanted and am really happy with the purchase so far.
From what I've gathered, Tikka would use plastics because they're Sako line uses a lot of the same hardware, with a few minor upgrades. If they used all the high end parts on the Tikka, no one would pay the extra $700 for the Sako. Ask the deer that drops at 300 yards if the plastic mag matters. I'm not sure he'll care.
You missed the point. Using plastic to cut manufacturing costs without passing the savings on is a minor thing if safety isn't affected. As long as you accept that fact and buy anyway that's fine, that wasn't the point. The point was compromised safety.Quote:

You are right about one thing.....The 300 yd. deer won't care about a disintergrating plastic bolt shroud either.
Grabbed a scope this morning. Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40 with DOA reticle. Priced incorrectly at $199, so I got what I think is a pretty good deal. Now to try different ammo and sight it in!
So here's the setup. Bore sighted on the bench, just need to get out to do some shooting and make the fine adjustments.

i love my T3 Hunter in 270 wsm - has a Leupold on it - great gun...
Had a fair number of co-workers start or re-start hunting lately. Everyone asks my opinion on what's the best bang-for-buck rifle/scope setup for your average deer and/or moose hunt. I always suggest to them a T3 in 30-06 with a Redfield Revolution scope, so far three friends have followed my advice and all three could'nt be happier with their purchases.
