Check your PMS.
Just noticed what phone auto corrected that too.. Fixed it
I will take you on a trophy porky pine hunt. For a trade for a deer hunt
I thought you could not "legally" hunt porkies.... am I remembering wrong?
Something about leaving them for people who get lost in the bush.....
I would look for them in a cedar swamp . in decent weather they will be up in the cedar trees. Look for a patch of yellow snow, around the tree. You can also smell them if you are downwind. That is how I hunt them. The coyotes will thank you.I guess if it is illegal to hunt them ,I must be the worlds worst poacher. Old243
Past on one yesterday, it was on the ground nibbling away on a white pine tree. Coyote was the game we were after.
Yes, in general you may hunt any animal year round except:
- “game animals”, or
- “specially protected wildlife” or
- any other bird that belongs to a species that is wild by nature and is not a game bird (except crows, starlings, brown-headed cowbirds, red-winged blackbirds, house sparrows, grackles)
This would include such animals as, porcupines and groundhogs. These animals are still protected in that the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act still applies. Therefore you still require a hunting licence, must comply with all other hunting rules like unloaded in a vehicle, plugged shotgun, etc., but there is no closed season and there is not a limit on the number of animals which may be hunted.
This licence is not valid in northern Ontario and part of central Ontario from June 16 to August 31 except for hunting by falconry and hunting game birds on a game bird hunting preserve.
I had asked the ministry before about porkies and they did tell me that you can hunt them. I was just not sure of what type of land they would inhabit to try to find a place where I could hunt them. I only want one which I plan to have mounted so I'm not rushing out to get one but thank you for the advice on where to look.
And sorry I don't know of anywhere to hunt deer at the moment I am just beginning hunting and have only done small game so far
Thanks for the clarification, looks like a misconception on my part.
It's a pretty common misconception, I'm not sure how it started, maybe it used to be true somewhere? But no there are no restrictions on hunting porcupines as long as you have a small game license. As for where to find them, look up... I've seen them in both coniferous and hardwood trees, usually thick forest. In the early spring I've sometimes seen them walking around in open fields eating grass, they must be starved for greenery at that time of year and grass comes out before leaves?
In the spring when the sap is running, you will see them in hardwood trees, mostly in the evening. after the sweet sap I guess. old 243
I know of a couple hunter education instructors back in the early to mid 80's that used to tell their students to leave them alone as they were a relatively easy animal to find and kill in a survival situation. It may not be a regulation but makes good sense from a survival stand point; that's not to say that you shouldn't kill nuisance animals or animals close to urban areas. What ever you decide good luck finding areas...FB
