Just a side question.....do bear hides get sold at these auctions ?
Rats werent bad and fisher but otter were bought back thats not a good sign. and ones that did sell nowhere near price of last yr.400 plus buyers.
Spent the day at the sale today with my oldest daughter we had a great time , pleased with my averages so far and hope this sale irons out some of the major wrinkles the fur market has went through the past 3 months , I'd be a little disappointed if I was a ranch fox farmer right now though and I hope for their sake they can manage for a couple more months till things play out in Europe

you mean like these ones
hahaha....they look a little lumpy to lay in front of the fireplace.
I asked because I don't hear much about guys 'selling' their Black bear hides, seem to keep them for themselves. Where to they source them to sell at the auction.
There are some black bears there mike as well as a small number of rug mounted polar bears and a couple of rug mounted grizz bears
, I never spent much time looking at them so I couldn't say how many bears there were but a guess from what I seen on the carts would be less then fifty , the bears are sold by trappers and hunters very few sold as time to put up a bear proper is far from reflected in the price received for black bears
Getting close to the 1984-1987 fisher prices again! Just checked my account and I got a bunch at $192, $194, etc. Wasn't expecting this, as I took them earlier than usual, and most were grade I and I-II animals. Mink was good with over a $30 average. Had a couple get $38, which is higher than it's been in years. Fox prices look down from last year, as are otter. The folks with a good rat catch will be pretty happy - $15-$17 and the best winter rats are yet to come. Keeping my fingers crossed for coon, as I had a good run this year, managing to get a good bunch of select December 2XL - 4XL jumbos with good colours. There will be a few trappers sporting new Dickies jackets from this sale........maybe even a new chain-wallet!
What was the average for coyotes?
Hope there's better news for the marten and beaver trappers at the FHA sale. Poor to very poor clearance, lots bought back. Looks like the buyers aren't willing to pay last year's prices for the marten.
Matt: We might be eating crayfish from the crick, rather than lobster! Coon was a big disappointment over last year . $28 for what was a $48 coon last year. I barely got half of what I was expecting. Didn't see that one coming.
I figured the coon market was going to do this Fenelon , I was hearing rumour of declining pricing at the country dealer level in the U.S. For most of the fall , The market last year was somewhat of an anomaly and the Chinese import problems along with a softer retail season in Asia and Russia due to milder weather has led to price resistance and with the price levels at last years auctions the buyers have gotten far more conservative , it sucks as a producer to see 50% swings like this but I've sold coon through nafa since the early 90's and if I look back at my records I see a fairly consistent price over time , but man 40 buck coon are way nicer then 18 buck coon lol
Just checked the sale on coon and beaver.Pretty bad when 4xl coon select av is only 10 cents more then my rats. Beaver good on exl and up but below that down. guess the big shot fur buyers in china that were busted late last yr didnt get out of jail in time for sale.
How much was marten this year?
I sometimes wonder what the "break even" point is for auction houses to determine if it's in the best interest of both the trapper, and the house, to let goods go. I think they (NAFA) should have bought back the top lots of coon at this sale, rather than letting them go for those rates. I would have rather taken my chances at the next sale. I think they let all my 2,3 and 4XL SEL A and Bs go for way too cheap, regardless of the current market. Makes me ill every time I look at my sales receipt. Time to give FHA a go.

Overall I'm pretty happy but I haven't been in the game for about 8 years since the coon prices crashed and I got caught with my pants down. Back then coon were averaging $32 - 35 dollar for quite a few years and then they went unsold for a sale or two. Then they blew 'em out at about $5 a hide! I think I had around 200 hides in the fur house at that time.....That was a BIG screwing. Put a bad taste in my mouth and out of the game until this year when I thought what the heck, lets try R again as work was slow and I had some free time on my hands.
I averaged $20/coon, $14.32 per muskrat and got $38 for a mink.
How'd everybody else fair out?
Blutck
FHA results coon very lge unsold. Only 35 per overall sold. Mink top 24.00.So they were if anything worse.
WOW - Quite a price difference in the mink eh? I haven't seen what "top lot" sold for or an overall sale average, but my mink I sent in was graded as (size/grade/colour) LM *SEL DBR-BR.
7 out of the 9 coon I sent in sold, so NAFA bought back 2 of my hides. The 2 they bought back were graded as XXL *SEL 4.
I know you guy's are trappers but what is farm raised mink going for? Just curious because my Aunt and Uncle raise mink in NS.
Ranched mink prices are extremely variable, as they can selectively breed them for so many colour variations. A quick check of the last sale shows good clearance. males usually about 70-100 bucks. Females about 40 - 55.
There was a mink farm in London on Commissioners Road West at Brick Street in the 50s. As kids we would torment the mink as we walked to school. No fences everywhere back then . Beautiful animals but viscious. Lost half a finger to one. My Mother was not impressed. :)
Great white the ranch mink market is off 30-50 % from last years highs , prices last year hadn't been seen scince the fur boom of the 80's , there is much going on in the fur market right now and until we see what happens at the upcoming sale in Finland that fha and American legend and saga fur are jointly having we won't know for sure what direction the market is heading in for sure , I'm hoping for reasonable prices at 100 percent clearances
I thought the prices Fenlon was quoting were lower then last year (Thanks Fenlon). 30 - 50% off that's quite a drop. So I'm guessing my Aunt isn't as rich this year. Yeah the late 80's was the peak. I think my Aunt peaked in sales in 1988 but then they had silver foxes and only a few hundred. Now they have mink I believe they have the largest mink farm in NS.
Like I've said there are big things going on in the fur market world right now and until a few things get sorted out last years extreme prices are off the past tense , last year the Chinese pushed out many of the other traditional buyers out and now much of that inventory is sitting unsold due to price resistance at the retail level and unseasonal weather in their markets , one of my biggest fears at this point is the amount of raccoon sitting at the dealer and trapper level in the country south of the border , from what I'm hearing it's large , the ranch mink farmers also have overproduced the market this year and it may take some time to move 82 million ranch mink through the world system
