Carlson's TKY extra full .665 in my Benelli SuperNova
HS Strut Undertaker XT HD
I like my patternmaster
browning factory full....I don't by into the specialty hype.
Browning factory full..............X2.......................Boog
Hs strut. Cheap and deadly.
Indian creek
CIL single shot shoulder bruiser in factory full choke....
Undertaker throws a decent pattern and price is right
Take your gun with full and pattern it. If you're not happy, buy an aftermarket extra full one, but pattern your gun 1st.
Me? I use the extra full turkey choke that came with my Mossberg 500 turkey barrel. But have just as easily shot a regular full choke with success.
ya I think ill test out my full choke that came with my supernova. If I don't like the pattern ill buy a extra full
Also keep in mind, that it is a balance of 3 things, gun, choke, and shell. You may get a pattern you don't like with the full, but it could be just the shell you're shooting, get a few different types and try different combo's.
What I had done, was Google my gun, and the chokes I was looking at, found people with the same setups and what was working from there, and tried those few combo's and found one that worked for me.
I use a Patternmaster Black Cloud choke to compliment the Federal Mag-Shot shells I use, like Black Cloud they are rear deploying. i find they are shooting a tighter pattern for me.
If I could ask exactly what is a Turkey Choke? Isn't it just an extra full choke? Is it that much tighter then a Full choke?
Also why do many use these after market chokes are they that much better built then chokes that come with the gun?
Turkey choke is just an extra full, yes.
That's why I've suggested patterning the gun with the full. Many folks would be completely happy with the full pattern, and knowing where it goes.
Why do many use after market chokes? Really?..........come on, how many of us really need all the camo we own? How many of us need all the calls, toys, etc.......
Now before the pile on begins, yes, I use an extra full choke. But I wouldn't have gone out and bought one if it didn't come with the gun.
Some other factors to consider are, what type of shot you're using, most factory chokes are not rated for Hevi Shot / High Density Loads and require an aftermarket that is.
As well there are some technology differences, some extended aftermarkets are ported for wad stripping ability, while some are smooth to allow the flight control (federal) technology do its thing.
All boils down to what you buy into, and want to pay for.
Personal choice and preferences.
Rem Choke stock extra full turkey choke
Typically a "turkey choke" is very extended to help tighten the pattern (and lengthen the shot string) more gradually and hopefully lead to a tighter, more uniform pattern. That being said I place more value on the correct load and choke combo and for me over the years it has lead to be a Primos jellyhead with 12ga 3.5" Hevi 13 #6 with 2 1/4 oz of shot. Deadly past 60 yards.
Thanks for the info fellas, I'm learning taking it all in.
Kicks Gobblin Thunder followed by Primos Jelly Head. Bought 2 different Indian Creek tubes for 2 different guns but didn't get good patterns. Most consistent patterns I've had is #5 Heavy Shot Turkey Loads followed by Winchester Supreme Turkey Loads
Of coarse they are always changing shot shell offerings, have you checked out the latest from Winchester Long Beard XR seen here http://winchesterproductdemos.winche.../index.htm?i=1
Check out the promo video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wW1egAxuNw
Now that is how you want your pattern to hit a bird.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, a box of shells lasts 5 years :-)
I used to do a lot of heavy patterning thus the conclusions I've drawn. Very happy with the heavy shot so likely won't be testing anything else until they run out...
Stuff looks pretty cool, I question "the knockdown power of high density" though. I also use Winchester Supreme elite loads (high density), and I believe 2oz travels at 1225fps (faster than lonbeard XR) and the shot is more dense. I can use a smaller heavier pellet (so I increase my pellet count) with better penetration (heavier with less surface area, less surface area also means less wind resistance and higher downrange velocity as well). Now if they could add that resin buffer to the HD, what next?? LOL:)
There is one way around all of this... bring the birds in close. I have grown to love hunting the bush and with it so thick every shot is less then 20 yard. Even when I hunt the field edge, my decoys are at 20 yard, I have not found a need to 'reach out and touch them', I doubt any shot has been longer then 30 yard.
I'm currently waiting on permission from a property owner to hunt turkey on his land. I wanted to get some patterning done in the mean time to find what I like, but I don't see that isn't happening. so it looks like I am just going to have to "wing" it and call the bird in close. If anyone lives near by an would like to help me out with my patterning issue ill buy you a case of beer :)
I could drive north or drive to silverdale gun club im looking to stay within 40mins
If you get the bird within 25-30 yards the pattern is almost irrelevant if your using a turkey choke with turkey loads. Patterning is more important for the 35ish + yard shots
This will be my first turkey hunt coming up so I'm just wanting to have the best results possible. I think I'm just going to use my factory full choke that the Supernova came with and try and get the bird in close. I've read that some people use the IC choke with turkey loads...is that safe/doable?
Use as tight as possible for factory chokes. With a full you are good to 25 yards easy
This has been my experience as well. Having taken at least a half dozen with archery I can attest that they do come easily to 20 yards or less hence no need for long range shotgun sniping. As a matter of fact a more open choke is a benefit at shorter ranges. Less chance of a miss.
I hanen't been lucky enough to take one under 50 Yards yet, but I am sure glad i did buy a turkey choke that can get the job done at that distance. I shoot at target at 50 yards for practice before i make the 6 hour trip down to hunt. I i can only take 2 days off work in the spring, so i take the longer shots. I wouldn't recommend these shots for someone inexperienced.
Indian creek for me as well
Picked up a Redhead Blackout turkey choke (made by Carlson's) for my M2 and it patterns fantastic out to 46 yds so far. It's not as tight as some but will definately get the job done. It patterns everything well lead, cp lead and heavy shot and won't break the bank.
Before switching to xbow years ago all I used was an old Winchester single shot with the Federal turkey loads (3" #4) and never lost a bird. Your Nova's factory choke will do the job just fine and be far more forgiving at closer ranges.
The one that came with my gun, ha ha, Remington Extra Full
Modified choke. No need for fancy chokes with flite control ammo.
I purchased the Remington Turkey Super Full choke for my 870, but I have not gotten out to pattern it yet. Have to locate some crown land in the next few weeks.
I noticed that some chokes are ported (have holes) near the end, has anybody noticed a difference between ported and non ported tubes.
Primos Jellyhead in .665 (870 12g) with #6 lead.
The .660 Jellyhead is popular down south where #7 shot is legal, but in my experience it blows out the pattern with the #6 we're allowed up here.
I own 2 Indian creeks and Pure Gold out patterned both of them...
The absolute best patterns, as many posters here and in other forums mention are those shot out of the premium quality Indian Creek and Pure Gold chokes. As always, individual patterning with a variety of loads determines the best combination.
I for one, have not splurged on an expensive choke yet and still use budget and/or factory chokes. Shot a few birds using my original Browning BPS Invector Full with great success at ranges just over 30 yards. Have since switched over to the Primos Tightwad and have patterned it extensively and feel comfortable enough to take shots up to 50 yards.
I'm going to be using my supernova factory full choke and Winchester supreme 3 inch
