Not what I was looking for...

After calling in a yote last week and having him see me move at 150 yards I thought I should head back out and try again this afternoon with light winds. Went to a new spot with a buddy for his first time calling, he runs a lot with the hounds but has never tried calling. We got set up with the spitfire to the left of us and beside it the mojo rabbitt. Started off with lightning jack on volume 2, within 2 minutes I noticed something at the bush line staring at the decoy. Squeezed the trigger and down he went. First fox I have ever seen while hunting, I see them up north at camp or at night driving but never during the day.

Ya not many around here, had a guilty feeling last night. I think I let foxes walk from here on, unless I'm going to tan him myself.

Too bad it wasn't a coyote, good job calling him in...

I been close to a lot more fox than coyotes in SW Ontario.

I get that coyote numbers are up but there are still lots of fox around. Don't beat yourself up about it, I want to take one really nice fox and one really nice wolf and tan them myself. Fox are beautiful but so far deer, coyotes, grouse, wood ducks and many others. You taking a few fox will not cause problems to the population.

Do you have any stats on the fox population and how well they are doing ? I just don't see the numbers I use to see.

I have seen more in the last few years than I did when I was a kid, but I see a lot more coyotes now too.
I don't know the stats but I think that the emphasis on people going out and hunting coyotes is helping them along.
Saw a really nice healthy one up near Mississippi Mills near Ottawa, no coyotes seen yet on that property but beavers, weasels, mink, turkeys, fox, pretty much everything but coyotes.

Anecdottaly speaking I to feel as though Fox numbers are way down. Used to see them fairly regularily, its been 4 years since I've seen one. I'd love to see more, maybe one day have a chance at some kits.

Not seeing any in SW Ontario and have talked to a few hunters in this area saying the same thing. Nice picture JBen hope to see a few like that around here but with the Coyote population being so high I doubt it.

Speaking of this, actuall saw another fox running across a field on the drive out to my spot this am. There must be more of them around or just more active.

Around my way there are quite a few fox. You can tell when out looking for coyote tracks there are quite a few.

well we have quite a few around here. I am south of sarnia and we have many litters around every yr. Sorry but I shoot them here when I see them up in the yard after my ducks on the pond. Last summer I knew of 4 different dens within a couple miles radius of my house. Mostly in lane way culverts and one in a stump pile. Also Dover twsp out towards Mitchell's bay has plenty of fox, lived that way for 15yrs and always had a few litters raised every yr in the sand bank in the back field.

In the Niagara region our fox numbers are way down.
When we run the hounds on the coyotes theres only one spot that we have seen foxes at.
The coyotes have done a good job killing them.
