Nice article, especially for NAT GEO.
I would hazard a guess the trend is occuring here well. Definately theres a large upswing in fishing, and hunting while harder to see first hand, you can see how the big box stores are trying atleast a little to meet some demand.
This should have happened many years ago, hunting is something that has always included family for me, nothing wrong with mother and daughter joining the boys.
If I could only get my wife to hunt...would be perfect.
I often mention this to my wife. She counters with a pretty good point - If she hunted too, it might cut in to my hunting time even more because if she was as obsessed with hunting as I am, there would be competition for the little hunting time that is available. I might get stuck with the kids on opening morning while she is out hunting. They don't make Baby Bjorns in camo, so I can't bring my 16 month old into the treestand.
My GF loves nothing more than throw a sleeping bag in the back of the truck with little else and see where the road takes us. Loves time in the bush at a cabin where theres no electricity, no running water except the waterfall and mice in the cabin. Feel like ive found nirvanna.
She did the OHEP and got her PAL a couple years ago. Were hoping maybe this year she takes her first WT.
RF2.
Kids do grow up and parents find themselves with more free time.
Just saying.
My ex-wife is a great small-game hunter; she can find rabbits or grouse any time. She dislikes guns so only uses a bow. And to make it harder, a recurve: no scope, sights or release.
I guess because more and more guys are heading to the Spa for mani-pedis, makeovers and cosmetic surgery, it makes sense that girls think they need to take over the hunter gather role in society :)
Yeah, she just makes that point to tease me. She's not interested in hunting at all, but she's not against it. As time goes on, she's finally realizing that I'm most happy when I'm hunting, so it benefits everyone if I spend time in the bush. Other than our first year of marriage, she's been pretty good about not complaining that I am often out hunting in the spring and fall. That was a tough year though - a battle I was not willing to lose.
Yes - women are just about everywhere these days - if you want to take a leak in the woods you have to look around first - years ago women wouldn't go to certain places or have certain jobs - is that good or bad - I don't know - we report - you decide - I just hope that we men can keep our last bastion safe from them - a place where we can still be men without interference - it's the men's room - if that should fall we are doomed -
Living a very sheltered life Joe?

great post and nice one impact
Mines been bugging to take the course. Not sure she can stop talking long enough to get a buck.
Might just need to take up duck hunting.
Plus she looks pretty cute in camo
Up here, women hunters is just the norm, never been a shortage, but it does seem to keep increasing, good on them!
My eldest daughter got her small game and her turkey licence. I had a lot of fond memories with her. She's older now, got into Journalism and caught the "city bug". My youngest daughter loves to tag along, but doesn't want to shoot a gun, maybe in a few years. One thing I have to say, I really enjoyed having their company.
Some of the memeories....

Nothing wrong with hunting and getting a quicky in the bush.
Looks like some good times bushcannon
Well Impact - I don't know where that sign was at - but things like that wouldn't fly in my neck of the woods - if it ever does than yes we are doomed for sure - nothing like sitting on the throne reading OOD magazine and have some well dressed, good looking women sit next to you and proceed to blast away with weapons of mass destruction - it would ruin my day - maybe even my life -
Awesome pictures! Everyone should be so lucky to have their children want to spend time with dad and mom in the woods, my oldest (3) is hunting obessed (comes by it honestly) and from that, mom started tagging along as she want's to spend time with him to. Here's hoping our youngest (3 months) catches the bug to!
Thanks, I find that your kids will bond with you because they are included. When they are part of the hunt, they feel like part of a team. The amount of social time is un-replaceable. From the time the night before getting the gear ready, to the drive to the spot and the time spent in the stand. My kids learned a lot from and I learn a lot from them.
In regards to your youngest, start them early as possible and the "bug" will come naturally. It's important that they don't get negative feed back about hunting at that age because from what I saw, it could effect them later on. Teach them the conservation aspect of the sport.
Good Luck and Fond Memories
My daughter is 8 she shoots her bow weekly (Bear Apprentice) she's watched me shoot Turkeys and sat in a double stand and a ground blind on deer hunts
she loves watching hunting shows specially the ones with "pretty girls" ie. Tiffany Latousky and Eva Shockey she likes the fact you can be beautiful and hunt too.
she has plans to go for her apprenticeship as soon as she's 12 and make her first harvest that fall
Dan
Funny you mention that. I just had a conversation with buddies wife about hunting alone. She said she would never hunt alone in case she got lost. I told her that if she ever got lost while by herself, all she needed to do was peel off every stitch of clothing and stretch out butt naked. Guaranteed there would be a couple of guys show up within minutes. She wouldn't be lost anymore.
goosesniper had it right...a bit of romance in the woods would be fun. However, if you've watched the Blue Collar Comedy tour (I have the whole collection BTW) you will remember Bill Engvall talking about going deer hunting with his wife. Here is the YouTube link... I recommend watching while not drinking coffee...

Not sure why anyone wouldn't want it, wouldnt want to hunt with a female.

Both my daughters were introduced to the Outdoors young. Both love it. My eldest (the Tom boy) has no interest in hunting, she is the nature lover and while she loves eating anything, she herself at this point in her life, couldnt do it.
My youngest is a typical girly girl. She's into makeup, clothing, malls, competitive gymnastics, dance and cheer. She wants to gt her PAL and come hunting with me. I'd love nothing more.
Here is at 14 before an illness put an end to most of her competitive sports.

Either of them, could be your DiL someday.
I'm lucky I have 3 girls in my life who love the Outdoors. Be it hunting, be it fishing, be it camping.
Whats not to love about that.
Joepa,
I didn't know the noun Hunter was specifically male. In fact, all of the dictionaries I have looked at describes the term Hunter as a person who hunts. None of the dictionaries denote a hunter as a male or hunting as a male activity. Looking at the animal kingdom, females of predator species take part in hunting with some species (lions) the females do the majority of the hunting.
With that out of the way, I am glad more and more females are deciding to persue hunting for a number of reasons. One, the more voices in support of hunting is always a good thing. Two, having females hunters onboard will hopefully soften the non-hunting public's image of hunting of macho he-men who simply want to go out and shoot as many animals as we can and get them on our side when it comes to hunting issues. Three, fathers spending more time with their daughters passing down their hunting passion is a good thing.

I thought JoePa was referring to the unisex washrooms sign when he suggested that there's still a place women don't belong....
I am just waiting for women to get into it in a big way. Right now all shopping malls are designed and retailed to focus on one gender. Get more women into hunting and more shopping malls will have stuff for hunting and shooting. I can hardly wait ...
Now then, I am just waiting for the first of many exchanges that go like this.
Wife: "Honey, does this rifle match my pants?"
Husband: "Yes, of course it does."
Wife: "You're just saying that cause you want to get in the truck and go hunting. I am not going into the woods with a brown rifle if I am wearing green."
PAUSE
Wife: "Tomorrow I am going right down to Canadian Tire to get a proper rifle that matches my pants. And I just realized my boots don't match either."
PAUSE
Wife: "This hat is all wrong. I can't go out like this. What will happen if we see someone else. Why do I have to wear orange. This is an icky colour..."
By this time the husband is just a puddle in the carpet as he realizes that the new rifle he wanted is now way down the priority list that will continue to grow.
For me? I am investing in women's hunting apparell. It will be the next big market.
Gonna start x dressing are you D. Lol
Yea, gonna mix camo and plaid. My wife will roll her eyes and then ask the same question I have heard so many times...
"You're not going to go out dressed like that are you?"
My wife stopped saying that years agk.. I've walked into Walmart with my woodland pajama pants, red T-shirt, and mossy oak infinity boonie hat.
Kinda looked like this...
