Has anyone heard of these guys? Just recently heard the name and started doing a little research. Their business seems to be pretty new.
All products Canadian Made, in Kingston.
They had a nice booth at the Carp Show this weekend, calls sound really good. Turns out one of the Co-Founders, is Eric Gryba, Defenseman for the Sens.

They were discussed in a recent thread called "SLO custom calls" since their symbol is basically the same as the SLO logo and people were getting confused.

So far this has been the biggest misleading information from them. They push their product by saying they are Canadian made, flalse the duck call is an ECHO insert that is straight from 'Murica. So it's basically and echo call, but the goose call as far as I've been told is their own product.Quote:

Yes, Ryan USED to work for David, but that was years and years ago, since then Ryan has moved on to Get Hidden Outfitters and Team Fall Brawl i believe, and now Capital..

Actually Ryan probably has allot more years under his belt then you think. Guided for slo for a long time before departing, also running groups out west through services there. Just because he's young doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's doing.Quote:

I think the comment was more of a broad generalization of things, which for the most part is true, evyone wants to be a hunting star nowadays it seems (take a look on you tube). It seems to me many of these people are a little mislead and making it more about posting numbers than the true sport of hunting, but who can blame them for trying to make a couple of bucks.
I stole this from Welsh in his post on woodcock in the upland forum, I think his comments, though in relation to upland hunting, mirror my own concerns regarding the state of waterfowling and commercialization of it.

I honestly don't get the hate. Ryan is a good friend of mine and i'm helping him with this anyway I can. I also have another good friend of mine starting a call company here in Canada in the near future but with reactions like this I have a feeling people are just going to run him down too. He has a goose and a maple leaf in his logo too, Does St Lawrence own that right.
Just be happy people, we now have some waterfowl companies popping up in our own Backyard. Canadian Waterfowlers Pro Shop (you should shop here first, lol) Parr's Pro, DPA, Canadian Waterfowl Supplies and now Capital Waterfowling. We have never had this many options as waterfowl hunters in Ontario. We need to start supporting places like this, spending our money in Canada and not complaining and dragging someone's name through the mud because they have a Goose in a Maple Leaf as there logo..

I 100% whole heartedly buy from canadian waterfowl stores/companies if and where possible for my waterfowl gear which includes Distribution Plein Air, and Canadian Waterfowl Supplies etc. but it sure as hell won't include a company that states they are Canadian, both made and assembled when they blatantly are not!
Really, who cares. My gut tells me its just another wannabe waterfowl outfitter who will be gone by next season.

Lyin Ryan is right. I booked a hunt and plans changed and he wasn't able to take my group at that time. We had already sent him our money and he said it would be mailed back. 6 months later he is still not replying to any messages!!!!!!! Very frustrating!!!! He is not trustworthy!!! Do not send him any money!!!!!
Congrats to Ryan for calling in his own organized calling competition today and Winning with the judges being his very own call staff.....

yes and what im saying is it happens allot, you just have to suck it up and deal with it. Christ when I participated in the mason dixon in maryland a couple of years ago Hunter Grounds called in it too, and his father was a judge along with another Grounds pro-staffer !? And that whole event (world goose, mason dixon, live duck and live goose) is up there with one of the biggest calling events in the industry.Quote:

The "commercial" waterfowl and hunting industry is funny though. Normally when you hear something negative about someone or a business, there is usually more than one incident. (ie. this thread or Woods and Water) And then there are others that you rarely ever hear a negative word spoken about. (i.e. Luke Schreders or SLO).

I did not attend this event as I had other obligations. Now I had friends there that travelled a great distance to call and when they arrived it wasn't organized very well. No one knew what was happening, and at what time etc etc. Long story short they turned around and left. I don't chirp Ryan's calling ability at all, He knows what he's doing bar non. BUT I don't like the fact that he "Tooted his own horn" like that, like really he won his own calling comp with his staffers judging? I can see it now, CW will be campaigning that their calls win competitions all over.....meanwhile its their own organized calling comp with their judges. If customers knew that it would be laughed at. To me it's just something you don't do. Ryan could have called but state that he wasn't being scored. Give the underdogs a chance at winning their first calling comp possibly.Quote:

I think the numbers of waterfowlers are holding their own. Sure, not the numbers of the 60-70s but doing pretty good.
But regardless of how much it grows, it will never grow enough to see any kind of major waterfowl product manufacturer set up shop in Canada. Cost of material, labour, transportation is just too much and there will never be enough waterfowlers in Canada to solely support such thing.
But let's be serious, the amount of migratory birds shot in Canada compared to the US is minimal at best.
What major waterfowl companies manufacture most of their product in the US? And why couldn't a Canadian company make an impact in the waterfowling world?
there are no where near enough duck and goose hunters in Canada to enable a solely waterfowl based comapny to be viable on any type of scale et la Drake, GK, GHG or Zink. I am not saying a Canadian startup could not be successful only you would have to have a standout product that would sell in the States. Which means a lot of startup money (or investors) marketing, promotions and a product that people want to buy.

As for this whole thread, it just points at how ridiculous the whole waterfowling market has become. In recent years, there have been so many start-up call companies. I have respect for someone who is hand-making a call and can't say that I've taken time to do it myself. But what really separates these dozens (if not nearing 3 digits) worth of call companies? For most, they are the same thing. It's not like any of these companies are engineering better sounds with science or extensive testing. They are turning barrels, installing inserts and saying "that sounds good". But you'll have guys going on and on about how their call is so great.
After last season, I finally own my first custom call. But it was a gift and I chose that one to support a friend in his startup. Not because I thought it would get me more birds.
Agreed. And more is not always better. Canada pop is around 35 mil or so. U.S. Approaching 400 mil if not past that already. And hunting in the U.S. ain't cheap in most cases for access to good hunting, Americans pay big bucks to hunt, because they can (Economic differences.... Too long and boring to get into). Not to say there aren't Canadians who will spend the bucks, but I believe the % per capita with the time and disposable income to do so is much less. Just a hunch of mine.Quote:

Making a duck or goose call from scratch ain't easy, and I can respect anyone that puts in the effort to make their own. That said, my sense is that most of these start ups are punching numbers into a cad machine and coming up with identical dimensions (or eerily similar to an existing call's dimensions). I guess I have some custom calls, though I can't say I think any of them are better than the higher end big brand names. I suppose any start up faces significant challenges and competing with the big companies wouldn't be easy for anyone, whether they are Canadian or not.
Still, some calls companies have come to prominence in recent years. Zink, for example, is relatively new, and they look like they are doing fine. I guess ultimately, I think if you make a great product it can sell, but being a world champion carver or caller will may be the only way to facilitate that. That said, if a Canadian lad wins the worlds in either duck or goose, I'd bet he could sell a few calls. That's how most of the big ones got on the map -- win with someone else's...make your own...win with it.

I doubt that a Canadian company could be successful without making a lot of sales in the US. The Canadian market is just too small and widely dispersed. And unfortunately, "Made in Canada" is not the selling point that "Made in USA" is in the States.
