a few days in the forest
time in the forest.
the initial idea was to get into the same back country walleye lake
i was in last yr, but my aging 2wd vehicle with 260,000kms wasnt up to challenge
and to be honest i wasnt up for the 60k walk.:silly: especially with this winter.
so it was back into the rugged mixed forests of the trout lands.
this yr would see me in the bush for 21d solo.
to some purists it might not be considered a true solo
in that i did meet other folks some days while there.
bite was super slow, but i still managed a few incredibly tasty
eaters.most of all tho, it was just so awesome to be completely immersed in a real
Canadian Winter!
drinking water from the lakes, harvesting and burning wood,
starry nites,snowstorms and sunrises.
and snowstorm it did! got caught out when that two day Texas low
rolled through. +3 rain then into ice pellets/snow then chill again. with gusts of
70-80k the trees were blowing like crazy. even had to use earplugs to be able to
sleep. was certain there would be a few trees come crashing down upon my head. thank the Lord
that didnt happen. highlight for sure was in
meeting up with some ole friends and making some new ones.
iam eternally grateful to incredible generosity of my northern friends!.
caught a gnarly one second last day
with last minnow. had a set-line rigged up with a small egb spoon and
single hook. rested the rod on my milk crate. bout 20 minutes later the bell goes off
and line was peeling off spool. quick pic and released.
have a great season guys.
see yall nxt yr

Awesome to see that there are still guys, gals still out there enjoying the winter months. Love the pics and the entire camp set up complete with stove and all. These old bones don't like that -30 temp reading on the thermometer though. Truly being in touch with nature for sure...
-
What a great time with great pictures to share a memory of a lifetime! Awesome......thanks for sharing.
-
Some great shots! Looks like some great meals....you obviously didn't starve!
-
Amazing adventure,thanks for sharing.
-
Another awesome trip for you in the bush ..I love the read and the pictures every time you post ... you're like Survivorman ..
-
-
Would it be rude to ask where you were??
I totally respect your determination..
-
I 'heart' your speck pics. Great read and pictorial. Cheers!
-
I enjoyed this read too. And great pics. Thanks for sharing
-
thanks guys, glad you enjoyed.
ya i most certainly didnt starve.
i think I may have put on 5 lbs.:D
the trappers id met spoiled me rotten.
t-bones,moose,shrimp,venison pepperettes etc
a massively big upgrade from the mostly dehydrated stuff i take.

i hear ya Bo D on the body not liking the chill.
this was the first yr i realised a dream and got a hot tent.
what a difference from the open fire/tarp i used to do
wished id done it before the arthritis began:confused:
http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...son221/163.jpg
even better than the Hilton

Thanks for sharing your yearly adventure again. That tent looks much more comfortable than your tarp setup.
It sure must be hard to get back into your regular routine after being in the bush for 21 days ( then again , I bet a hot shower sure feels good after that ).
-
Awesome adventure!
Snow trekker tent? Nice setup! I'm going to be looking at investing in a tent / stove combo very soon. Do you make video of your adventures or just take photo's?

Stunning man! Every bit of this report total eye-candy for the soul. Thanks much for sharing.
-
Great pictures, My ruffin it is at the hunt camp. As long as you have dry wood , and lots of grub , life is good. enjoyed those big specks , king of fish. Old 243

Hi FishScuba,
ya, the hot tent is super luxurious.
but, i have to say there is something pretty
awesome too about the full on open fire living.
your just totally integrated into your environment.
for solo guy tho its a bit punishing.
cant say iam in a rush to go back to that anytime soon.:D
Hi Fishfrenzy,
yep, it a snowtrekker. (8x8 solo)
just this yr i did make a few videos.
mostly documenting weather and time with the trappers.
fish frys etc
Hi Moosebunk,
thanks
means a lot coming from the King of Lunkers/ trip reports!
you should be nominated for GG literary award btw.
they are all masterpieces.
Thanks old 243
-
Where did you pick up your snow trekker? Do you think there's enough room with stove for two people in the solo? If you have some video, put it up on youtube :)

I may have mentioned this before, but you have to be one well put together person to make this trip alone. Very, very few are capable of doing what you do. My compliments to you.
-
Hi FishFrenzy,
i ordered my snowtrekker online from their site.
8x8 could be used for two people. probably better off with 8x10 tho.
here are some short videos. quality is quite poor unfortunately.
fish fry, lil bit of that two day Texas low pressure
and some radio by the hot stove. :P

Thanks for the compliments Woody.

Nicely done... Where you drinking that cedar water for vitamin C???
I remember hearing at school natives did that to prevent scurvy.
No shortage of good food even without those fat red speckle fillets...:)
-
Thanks intothedeep.
The cedar tea was used because its
just part of the bush experience. (tastes pretty good too)
It is high in vit c like you say. I also supplement with pill form.
Dont wanna get sick out there:D
-
Well done and great report. Love the set up and your gear. I can tell you don't cheap on anything by the Arcteryx pants you are wearing in one of the photos.
-
Thanks Species8472.
ha, i do try to buy quality, but sometimes
i wear/use stuff well past its functionality date:silly:
interesting story on the arcteryx...
the previous pair of my goretex
was disintegrating. disheartened, i just kep wearing it
until id heard gore stands by their gear. sent it back
and they replaced it. never would have been able to
buy new stuff. must say i was very impressed with their
service.:D wish id was more proactive with my 9 yr ole hiking boots.
my cheapness my have led to an injured foot.
while cleaning my boots from a trip id noticed a large
triangular hole in the heel. which led me to repairing them
with Freesole and utilizing some other interesting techniques to keep em
goin :whacked:i finally bucked up and ordered a new pair. :scream::D

looks like an awesome adventure!!! !congrats and thanks for the pics and story!
