Animal Alliance of Canada and the usual suspects are going to Court for an injunction to stop it. www.toronto.ctv.ca
this is complete BS
I, for one, am all for the ban on the bear pictured in the article! we shouldnt be allowed to hunt those grizzly bears in ontario! shame on you people for thinking that we should! now, those black bears...pests that they are...have at 'em!!!! lol
I wouldn't worry too much about it. anyone can protest and I am sure most of these organizations have the means to bring it to court, however the courts will see right through them hopefully.
I am yet again surprised at the positive comments in the comments section. most hunting articles bring out all the wack jobs, but most seem supportive.
So, do we get to charge those whack jobs for destroying our ecosystem for having the hunt banned in the first place? Seriously....I would think that Harris and Schad should be held accountable for the imbalance in our bear population and the harm it is causing to our moose population, public safety, etc, etc. There was a breach of trust in banning the spring bear hunt as far as I am concerned! This gets me furious!
Exercising their legal rights. For that I applaud them.
However I doubt it will do them any good.
Hopefully they spend a ton of money, lose, and cripple their organization.
I would hope that when they lose, the judge awards the MNR / Ontario government full costs for their legal bill.
Zoo check is one of Barker's favourite's ! They only go after high profile issue's that make big headline's in my eye's ? clueless idiot's!!! Pull elephant's from toronto zoo but no mention of the heard at the african lion safari ? Because it isn't as well known internationally? Quack's
I'll pitch $100
This is what it comes down to, doesn't it? Would be nice if it could be done. I would pay a membership fee to a group of lawyers who aggressively and proactively maintained our interests via the courts.
To a point yes.
But I mean take it one step further. For example. Townships that have discharge bylaw's that do not make sense. When a township owns a boatload of land in the middle of nowhere that joe public has paid for, and they slap a no discharge on it citing safety reasons when it clearly is not the case...who fights this? OFAH would not bother in my opinion.
I'm not quite sure how an injunction proceeds but if both sides have a chance to put forth their argument and in this case it comes before a sane, logical and open minded judge or JP, then the idiots don't stand a chance.
Some of their perceptions of how the animals behave or act around bait sites are so far out to lunch that any reputable outfitter or seasoned bear hunter will shoot down their argument real quick.
I hope you are right Sawbill! It stands to reason that if a logical argument is laid out then we should still have the pilot project for 2 years. I must admit that this court date has me bumping back my baiting schedule though....I am not going to go bait and waste time and money for nothing...
By the time this works its way through a court system and a decision is handed down the hunt will likely be over already.
We still have snow in the bush but the bears are already out so I'd be baiting within a few weeks if I was going to hunt.
I was going to get out this upcoming weekend, but I may bump it back to May 2nd weekend with a mid-end of may hunt for 4-5 days.
I just don't want to invest the hours if it is going to be for nothing.
official update from the ministry as of today. Basically don't bug us until after April 29th.

Proposed Black Bear Management Pilot Program
in WMUs 13, 14, 29, 30, 36, 39, 41 and 42

A notice of application has been filed with the court challenging the province’s decision to implement the proposed bear management pilot program. The application is scheduled to be heard in court in Toronto on April 29, 2014. We intend to defend our position on this issue.
Depending on what occurs in court, the proposed hunt could be prevented from starting on May 1st as planned.
Please refer back to this site or contact the Natural Resources Information Centre at 1-800-667-1940 for updates on the status of the proposed bear management pilot program after April 29.
Public safety remains a priority for our government.
The purpose of providing you with this information is to ensure you are kept informed and should not be interpreted as providing any evaluation as to the merits of the applications.
I'd sure hate to be an outfitter that has been booking hunts and taking deposits...
Also the time, effort, and expense for baiting ... etc etc.
If this is held up or stopped then those guys get the rug pulled out AGAIN!
ONLY IN CANADA!
The OFAH should counter sue.
What do you think the odds are that the Liberals introduce this thing to get the votes, then get their bunny-hugger buddies to monkey wrench the thing so it doesn't happen, anyway? I wouldn't put any scheme past these lyin' bas**rds.
So with all the recent articles about the treatment of animals at the farms where they are raised and the slaughter houses that process the animals, organizations like PETA and Mercy for Animals should be supporting hunting instead if fighting against them. After all, the animal roams free in it's natural habitat and then is killed cleanly and humanly instead of being housed in a tiny cage and tortured before being killed (at least according to them, there may be some truth to it).
One way or another, we are going to eat meat, but perhaps the right to eat meat should be limited to those that are willing to go get it themselves?
I have been waiting for this argument to surface in the media. It is surprising that it hasn't. I think harvesting an animal in the wild is much much much more humane than most farm raised animals that people purchase in a grocery store. It is sad that a lot of people don't really understand how they get meat to the grocery store, they just know that is where they pick it up.
wacko PETA types are against slaughter of all types and any animal use or husbandry. not sure about the other organization mentioned.
I read an article yesterday that a couple in Stratford is trying to get a ban imposed on boiling lobsters alive, and want them at the very least to use a stun gun first..... They are aspiring vegans (currently vegetarians) and are against any animal slaughter...
its surprising how people are disconnected from where there food comes from. some even eat the meat but get bothered hearing that it came from an animal. I like to remind people like this every single time they eat near me, that what they are eating was a living thing. I think its disrespectful (to the animal) for someone to deny this simple and important fact about the meat you eat. I also like to remind people that the fields where there veggies are grown were once animal habitat clear cut, just to let people know that even vegetables impact nature and animal welfare and something must die for something else to live.
If you check the FWCA it has been updated with the spring season
do you have a link to that?
WooHoo!!!!

TORONTO - An Ontario judge has dismissed two animal rights groups' attempt to block the province's revived spring bear hunt — just days before it is scheduled to begin.
Animal Alliance of Canada and Zoocheck Canada were challenging a pilot project to reinstate the spring bear hunt the hunt.
The groups argued mother bears will be killed and their orphaned cubs left to starve or be killed by predators.
They had filed an application for a judicial review, arguing the hunt would be contrary to animal cruelty provisions in the Criminal Code.
The pilot project is slated to begin May 1 and run for six weeks in eight wildlife areas known for having the most public safety incidents involving bears.
The hunt was cancelled in 1999.
