This is the time of year when we start planning for next year. What would you like to read in OOD (either in the magazine or online).
Also, are there any staples you think we could improve on?
Thanks all!

How about something on blood tracking and training for it now that it's legal?
Maybe something on deer/moose mineral licks and foodplots. I dont think I ever saw an article on that subject, but I may be wrong...
How about an article on the Weslemkoon Lake property that was bequeathed to the OFAH. How does the OFAH use it and why is it not available to OFAH members to use?
A few articles on Black powder / Muzzle Loader guns and hunts would be nice.
Also some information of the Fur Trade that takes place during the winter months here in Ont would be great. I find it fascinating and thankfully some of the members are very good at providing their stories and result etc. Maybe a bit more coverage on the market side in the OOD mag would be nice
Thanks for asking for input April !!
x2 on the black powder articles! Especially black powder shotguns. Never seem to see articles about shotguns.
Maybe some articles on how people have managed their properties to attract wildlife. Maybe something on the way hunters work to conserve wildlife and habitat.
More dog articles, specifically retrievers :)
i would like to see more on rabbit hunting with and without dogs.
Less fishing
Great suggestion, x2. This topic will expand your reader base into a new market/demographic and further promote responsibility in the sport of hunting.
Contact these folks, they helped me out a lot and know their stuff:

There are some additional ideas here:
http://www.oodmag.com/community/show...ve-the-content
Less fishing. More articles on upland and turkey hunting.
Whatever the articles are - more advanced content. Almost all the articles are at a beginner level. Have a look at gundog mag or d&dh and see the depth of those articles - more like that.
Less deer hunting, less reviews of places that are "exclusive" feeling to some people. How about some coverage of Air Rifle hunting, Pest control with Air Rifles. Bow Fishing, Rough Fish fishing. Small game hunting, building/making Habitat for small Game. Hunting Groundhogs, Raccoons, Crows, Squirrels.
how about more online content of important meeting or more zone info and letting people in on the private stuff happening at head office or zone stuff there have been 2 meetings i have missed that was not posted on line and they were important ones.
I would like to see more of the diy projects and reader tips as well.
Agree on the less fishing suggestion. Not sure if they would be allowed to put it into the magazine but more information on field dressing animals.
With the internet's ability to answer almost any question regarding hunting and fishing, I find the newsy parts the best. Poachers, Regulation changes, habitat improvements or damages, research findings, clubs, you know - that kind of stuff. You usually only have 3 or so pages dedicated to that, I wish it was bigger.
MC
Gun dog training articles. Several pros in ON who would be glad to give us their time to contribute and pics of their set ups /dogs would be very interesting to folks too. Pics/ articles on some of the bird dog tests/trials + beagle trials. ... all in ON.
If you are looking for OFAH specific information or zone information, check out Hotline (in the middle of the magazine you get as a member) or on the OFAH website (www.ofah.org). There is a whole section there on each zone. That said, I've been told it is up to each zone to update their own website.
Would want to read more on:
Guns and ammo
Predator hunting
Gals and guns
Politics on guns
The next generations.
Upland and upland dogs
Less fishing ! in case you have missed that !
More about hunting with dogs, training them etc. and more small game hunting like rabbits (with and without dogs) and squirrels. Tactics, calls, hunting scenarios etc. Rabbit and squirrel and groundhog hunting is so cheap to get into that its a much better option for some hunters like new hunters or people that cant take off work for the short turkey and rifle deer seasons.
And definitely keep up the wild game cooking and recipes. More stuff on cooking outdoors with basic equipment. The food aspect of hunting is going to be vital to getting hunting more accepted socially.
Reloading ABC's for the newbie - differents types of set up, cheap to most expensive, cost benifits, i.e. practical video on online site.
PAL application process - for the newbie - A-Z. How to start, how long to/is wait for PAL.
Rules and regulations for newbies - common do's and don'ts - litter, sharing crown.
How to use Crown Land Maps Atlas - a guide
Listing of Crown lands (maybe web database)
Personally I do not like the last page by Steve G...I think it could be used for to serve a better purpose.
Post some online Forum threads in Mag to give higher presence.
Praise the MODS for Forum leadership
I agree with an earlier opinion. More Firearm articles. Articles about new shotguns/rifles. Comparison articles. Discussions on caliber choices related to specific game. The possiblities are endless. I realize advertizers don't want thier product to look inferior when compared to others but there must be some way to discuss a variety of firearms/products without hurting manufacturers feelings.
Newest article on the web: How to get started in blood tracking, with info on regs as well.
http://www.oodmag.com/hunting/dogs/g...lood-tracking/
more steve galea lol always read the back of the mag 1st
More hunting dog articles. You could do a different type every month, pointers, flushers , retrievers, hounds, versatiles. Also include the Ontario experts for each style. Breeders, Pro Trainers and also include actual hunt sidebar stories. Maybe back it up with a directory of breed clubs, CKC, Field trial/Hunt test schedules. Do separate columns on Hunt Tests and Trials. Lots of experts here in Ontario who I'm sure could fill a column easily
More articles in General, I love it all, I would like to learn more about Black bear hunting techniques, etc. I am not into it yet but it is something I would like to pursue in the future.
Reloading for sure. Economical setups and how tos
Predator hunting...
X2 I agree on the content of articles , I have a subscription to Fur Fish and Game.It is a small mag full of interesting and informative articles, and have every mag from 20 years on shelf. I recycle my OOD monthly.OOD is a quick read of entry level articles no reason to keep for reference. eg. the monthly gun articles by Ed Hall in FFG is so informative that OOD cannot hold a candle to it. Judd Cooney game calling articles are top notch, I believe he is wants us to be good game callers. Variety is the key with articles you need to address readers at more experienced level
How about articles regarding hunting with vets. An annual pheasant hunt on Pelee would be a start. Goose/Duck could be another. Perhaps some outfitters could provide their services.
I would like to see a spot on your web page where you have done all your fishing camp reviews so that I can go back and pick a region and see what camps you guys have done pieces on.
Thanks,
John
as you have a lot of long term subscribers, many have advanced in some type of hunting over the years and would prefer articles that reflect this. on the other hand, some beginner articles are always nice, not only for new hunters, but to get one interested in things that one hasn’t had a chance to.
Maybe once in a while some odd topics that get people actually outdoors rather than to the next store to buy more equipment; e.g. alternatives to sleds and atvs, self-guided tours, fall/winter camping, etc.
And other topics that indirectely impact many of us; e.g. vet bills and benchmarking of what standard services should cost
Fishing
- I would like to see more about fly-in fishing camps in Ontario, and local drive to fishing holes.
- How to properly prepare, organize, and pack for a fly-in fishing trip.
- How to fish the Great Lakes at different times of the year (equipment and techniques)
- Cooking: different types of camping cooking techniques
Hunting:
- Plans for making a hunting blind
- Deer calling techniques
- Deer scent techniques
Would like to see comments by the ofah on Dr vonholt's dna testing of North American wolves (largest ever done) proves that the Gray wolf is the only true wolf in north america. The eastern wolf and algonquin wolf are just coyote gray wolf cross. Which means the mnrf current coyote/wolf polices are going to accelerate the demise of the pure bred gray wolves.
Articles on DIY
Perhaps a section on modifications and tricks people have for fishing and hunting gear
Article(s) on getting kids out hunting (could be seasonal focused, one each just before spring, summer, fall and winter).
Articles on hunting ANYTHING other then deer, moose, bear, and general all big game. Some articles on Air Rifles and Air Rifle hunting...a little more infomation on what you can legally hunt in Ontario with Air Rifles. Ballistics, marksmanship, DIY gunsmithing( mounting scopes, clean and care type stuff).
More on rabbit hunting.
more on hunting with hounds.
hunting grouse with bird dogs.
an informative monthly article on used guns
An article on the traditional camp style deer hunts with guys doing drives for deer. The true party hunt.
I know it would really be tough to do with out imcriminating ( sp ) others . And you,d probably have to do it anonymously . But how about some real life stories on newb hunters / shooters and their adventures trying to find hunting / shooting lands or mentors .
Or maybe an indepth article on why its so hard to open a range in Ontario
Or have a hunting fishing article on one wmu in each issue , like an issue or articles that rate / score each or certain wmu,s
More trapping article
