Called my vet to book my dog (90 lb male lab)in to get heart guard and Advantix I was told he needs to have a test done to make sure he doesn't already have heart worm so the test plus the heart guard plus a summers supply of Advantix they told me is 360$ Seems like a lot just wondering what others have payed as well as opinions on the 2 products and if I should be considering and alternative to either one?
That's about what I pay. Considering the consequences of not getting it ; I consider it worth the money. Over the years, I have found both products to be totally effective.
Works out to $60.00 a month. I pay more than that on coffee. :)

That sounds expensive to me. Revolution isn't cheap and I paid about $140 for it (6 month supply, covers heartworm as well), and about $30 for the blood work.
I won't be using Revolution ever again after my experience with it last summer.
Edit, I guess if you throw in 50-60 for an office visit you're up to around the 250 mark, but still, 360 sounds steep.

Snap/Heartworm test: $43
Heartguard: $75
all in $250.....if you add the Advantix ( which we don't use) the bill would be close to $350....
So no you not far off at $350....cheap once a year to have your pet cared for and protected from harm..$30 a month or $1 a day.
I hate the spring. A few years ago I was paying over $800 for 2 dogs but a new vet bought the clinic and dropped his prices. I know pay just over $800 for 3 dogs. This includes a "multi-dog" discount. You can shop around and get other prices but you are not far off.
I paid around $130 for Advantix II and somewhere @ $75 or the heart gaurd. So what you are billed is not unusual. Don't cheap out on the flea/tick preventative. Advantix II is excellent. My dog hasn't had a flea or tick since switching to it and we hunt areas that are pretty thick with them.
$350.00 x3 dogs here - minus 20% for being old (me , not the dogs). My husband has promised to stop complaining. :)
I am paying about the same. You can't skip the test, because the consequences of treating an infected dog are potentially fatal. It's a necessary evil.

It doesn't prevent ticks from attaching to your dog. Last summer I pulled 3 ticks from my dogs ears, and that was just from sitting on the lawn. She wasn't out and about much last summer due to bone cancer, and I know the ticks were bad last year but I've never had any of my pooches get them on the lawn. End result.....the active ingredient that KILLS all 4 types of ticks is Permethrin. Any product that has that, in a good ratio, is going to work to kill ticks. Luckily we found it at TSC in Ogdensburg NY in a product called 'Liberty 50'....it has 50 % Permethrin ( more than Advantix by the way). It also is not water soluble so it sticks on better for dogs who like to swamp it.

The beauty is the cost.....they sell a 2 month supply, per dog, per pack for $13. We've been using it here for about 4 yrs and don't have an issue with tics and we're on a farm with lots of hay fields and bush surrounding us that the dogs run in daily.
I saw you mentioned Liberty in another post (probably this same thread) and I was actually checking it out. Yeah, that's pretty cheap. Too bad you can't get it here.Quote:

I have gone to the same TSC in Ogdensburg NY thats where I use to purchase my Diamond dog food but never purchased the Liberty. I decided to go with the Advantix II instead that was also cheap from my vet at Canton animal clinic. My brother uses the Liberty on his lab and says it works great.Quote:

I thought my bill was around the $200 mark last year . Total ripoff by the vets and as reported on the show Marketplace awhile back . If the Heartworm med actually works and is applied seasonally every year, from beginning to end then there should not be any reason to have a blood test done which also would cut out the vet visit fee . I'm starting to evil eye vets the same way as I do lawyers . Bottom feeders !!!!! .

That's the problem Rick . They BS you into the blood test and visit which leaves you little choice other than to go along with the program . One vet at moment is constantly calling to say that it's imperative to get the cat's teeth cleaned . It's to the point of telemarketing harrassment . I tell them no and next month it's the same BS call .

Our Vet allows us to sign a waiver to opt out. Especially if you've been diligently using the Heartguard annually. I can't remember back if that was allowed the 1st time we started to use it.Quote:

To the original poster, thank you for starting this thread. I love that we can compare and contrast across the board on this topic, because it's one that seems to have so many variables. Hearing what other people pay, what products they use and how they have performed etc. is great knowledge to have.

Since we're talking numbers here, I pay $60-70 per six pack of Adv or Frontline and $6 for ivermectine in horse paste that last me for 2-3 years (until the expiry date).
This will blow your minds. A good friend of mine just had an enormous tick taken off his dog at the vet in North Bay. She then applied a tick preventative but my buddy didn't know what brand which puzzled me. I asked him to check the packaging but he said this vet doesn't sell it that way. The vet only dispenses one dose at a time and they apply it not the pet owner. Can you see the amount of money this vet is squeezing out of this scam? Would you pay a visit charge every month during tick season? I recommended he find another vet.

I had a Large breed pup that needed only 2 doses in one weight category and then the rest of the summer he was going on to a larger dose. So they recommended coming in for the two instead of buying a whole box.

My vets are old school they grew up with my dad and believe if your a responsible pet owner you will know when something's up with your pooch. No waiver no bs just business. Also on the tick issue I was down at long point yesterday running the dog gf was out of town for the night so the pup got her spot in bed I woke up with a tick on me last night he had not bitten yet but his day was cut short. I am surprised no one has mentioned finding a generic brand of heartworm preventative medication (ivermectin) through the internet. We buy a 12 month supply for around $40.00 plus shipping (product called Nuheart). It comes from a vet supply business out of Australia. Of course you can always speculate whether this medication has the right dosage you are paying for and whether you can trust this approach.
My son's lab has lived with a heartworm infection for over 4 years now and is on the preventative for 12 months of the year. The dog originally came from southern Louisiana, a hotbed for heartworm. You can almost guarantee an untreated dog there will eventually get heartworm. Before bringing the lab to Ontario a local vet examined him and diagnosed the heartworm infection. One of the options commonly suggested in the south is to keep the dog on 12 month heartworm medication (preventative) so that no further infection occurs. Heartworms like any organism have a lifespan and eventually die of old age. Provided the infection is not extreme and affecting the dogs health they can live with it. Another retired vet friend who practiced in Florida said they rarely put a dog through the treatment to remove the heartworm (intravenous arsenic that has some level of risk) but recommended the full time 12 month heartworm medication. This makes me wonder why an annual heartworm test is required by vets in Ontario and also why they never suggest this alternative option. Of course the treatment to remove the heartworm makes them a lot more money. Sorry if this sounds cynical.
Yes I did talk about using that particular product and have for many years with my sled dogs. I have never done a blood test on any of my dogs for heartworm but used the injectable ivermectin liquid product to prevent.
You'd need to talk to a vet about this one. Everyone says the blood test is to make sure there's no existing heartworm, because if there is, the dog can die from the preventative. It probably applies to adult worms. AFAIK there are 3 stages...
I also recall one of the older treatment protocols is large doses of Ivermectin (the most common preventative), but this is all beyond my knowledge level of the subject.
Also, as I mentioned many times before, I don't buy medicine from Australia and such - no idea what it is and the storage conditions.
I am not sure how sensitive Ivermectin to storage, but why risk it, if I can buy it cheaper here..? Horse wormer.

For me, one good reason for the yearly blood test is to see if my dog has the early stages of heartworm( no symptoms), and it can then be dealt with early.
HEARTGARD Plus used monthly as directed can help prevent heartworm infection in your dog , but not a perfect product.

Depend on what you do with your dog. If his biggest trip is walking around the block, it might be fine. If he hits the field and woods , it is not the right product. Revolution covers wood and dog ticks, but NOT deer ticks which are what cause lyme disease in dogs and humans. That price sounds pretty average to me. Welcome to the forum. :)

I was just reading some sad news on another board and this poor lady had to euthanize her girl (very precious girl, but aren't they all?) last night due to lyme nephritis. I read up on it and man, that's a worst case scenario when dealing with lyme disease.
Would be so much better if caught in early stages. That's one of the reasons why testing for heartworm IS of value. The newer 4DX test also tests for Lyme.
I have been using ivermectin in my labs for the last 15 yrs. , I donot do heart worm tests & my dawgs are very healthy,also I know more than one person who do the same , I don,t want to tell anyone else to do the same but........ How many cases of heart worm do you know of in ontario or canada for that matter? Just sayin,

Well, as CA in TO mentioned, the latest 4DX test also checks for lyme. After reading what I did (my post above) I think it's a very good idea to have the test done annually.
