Hunters hunting without ATV are more successful .
Intrusting.
Bold statement, got any proof?
it all dependes were and how you hunt .at deer camp the guy with the atv can be out hunting shoot a deer and pass you as you make your way on foot to your stand he will be back at camp with his prize well you are still sweating climing your stand .DUTCH
I dont hunt from an ATV, I just use it after I shoot something, I would say that makes me more successful than the guy that is dragging his back to camp :D
Deer don't spook at the sound of an ATV.....I have driven both my tractor and my ATV within 50 yrds of grazing deer and they just stand and stare at you till you get off.....then they run for the hills. It's one of those ''myth' things.
Our camp learned years ago to sent a scout ahead of us on an ATV when we head out...we have shot more deer first thing by guys driving up to ridge with the sumac bushes and catching the deer still eating.
Almost all our guys drive their ATV's to their stands....park them right underneath....20-30 minutes later their sighting deer.
Keep a steady low throttle and they don't bat an eye.
Our gang uses ATV's to get into where we hunt. After that, they get parked and aren't used again until we either get something down or it's time for supper.
Yup that's a good video of what not to do when hunting using an atv . He forgot to bring beer and is wearing a helmet:scream:;) .

I dont own an ATV, probably not in my cards.
In Nov (rifle) I hunt 53A. We (group) are zero (tag soup) for 3 (years)
In Dec (archery) I hunt 47, right in the heart of loring deer yards. Thick as fleas they can be. We (group) have a couple ATVs and a couple guys that dont. I sure hate walking the 2 clicks to and from my stand when its -25.
We are 1 (tag filled) for 2 years.
So if having an ATV will up my success ratio, where do I sign up, because obviously not having one has me eating tag soup
:)
I haven't got any numbers to back it up, but I would guess that statistically speaking, you would be wrong. ATV's have their place, especially when it comes to moose hunting and handling heavier animals.
There's a big difference between cruising around with an ATV until you see something shoot-able and using an ATV as a tool to help with the "heavier" parts of the hunt or covering more ground in a hurry. Being able to get a place quickly to set up for a run with dogs means more hunts/day which usually means more deer shot. Saving time on heavier work so you can spend more time in the bush usually means more success.
I'm sure your 6 years of hunting has given you lots of insight on this type of thing.
I wouldn't own an ATV but this is something else.I can bring a young pup along and teach him to gut, clean, and skin game.I can't walk or work hard any more but over 50 some years of hunting,I know a few things.
Uuuhmmm. That is an All Terrain Vehicle. Commonly referrd to as a "Side by Side" version of one.Quote:

As for the original post I will offer him to pull the next big buck out of the bush that our group shoots from some of the swamp stands we have lol. Given he doesn't like large groups he'll have to leave after he's done and go sleep in his car (cause only 4x4 vehicles make it to our camp anyway) and we'll enjoy a cold one sitting on our ATV's (we can them 4-wheelers eh)....JK:silly:
I agree that this is the case, there is no doubt that machinery and vehicle noise spook game. Always there are stories of people smoking and shooting game, driving up on deer in the field, the unknown, the amount of game that will never bee seen as it was spooked prior to the arrival of the person and machine is the proof. On a trip to Alberta I was fortunate to be watching a hillside which held 3 moose, a half dozen elk, a few mules and a handful of scattered white tails, a group of oil workers on atv,s were about a km away(seen from my vantage point) and all the game fled minutes prior to them entering the area where the game were. The mules held, as they will typically do, and I wondered if the guys on the four wheelers thought of how sneaky they were to be able to approach the game..... Having said that I have nothing against atv, however there is no doubt in my mind that they are responsible for decreasing success in hunting, at least on arrival and departure. I am aware, as many of us are, that they are also responsible for in advertantly spooking game for other hunters, often at no fault of the operator. This is true in a half dozen big game hunts I have been involved in where animals were making their way to me or my friends and were spooked by a boat, atv or vehicle.
After baiting for years I soon learned that the bears were just waiting for me to come blasting in with the quad to re-bait a site. They hit it the minute after I left.
I agree Sawbill . The only thing I notice that spooks game when I'm hunting is those dang jets passing over . I wish people would stop flying . Likely spotters on those jets .;)

OK, so hunting with or without an ATV makes no difference. This is the first year I have had an ATV and not only did I shoot the most geese I have ever shot but I also shot 2 deer, 1 moose and a turkey. All using the ATV to get to the site and transport my equipment like decoys, blinds and tree stands., than to drag them out sure was a lot easier. However prior to having the ATV, I have shot multiple other deer, moose, geese, ducks and partridge in a single year, lot more sweat and blood to get in and out.
Funny that you mentioned that. I knew a real old timer that always hung an old barrel ring from a limb and every time he re-baited a site,he'd whack that thing at least half a dozen times. It was his "dinner bell". WE all thought he was nuts until we noticed that a half hour after,in came the Bears. It didn't work every time, but,we shot some big frickin' Bears over the years.
As far I can see the OP likely meant no harm in his way of asking a question by "making a statement"
Lets say he asks like:
-What everyone thinks ,hunting without an ATV can make a hunter more successful?
Or
-What you guys think, hunting with ATV can be detrimental to your hunting success, hunting experience or does it makes a difference hunting with an ATV.
He would likely get a tons of feedback, pros and cons ,experiences and lots of friendly advices too........
There is no real need to beat him up-at least as far I can see.
No offence to anyone.
As far I am concerned-I have no ATV, yet sometimes(after a successful hunt in the "waaay back")I wish I have one. Otherwise I am perfectly fine to walk miles and miles, walk in 1-2 km (if need be)or drag that deer out with a simple deer cart. It is sometimes hard work with of sweat , but that is just my way.

To everyone its own.
Hit the nail on the head there i'd say GBK
It certainly did get the debate going though!
Perhaps it's the stupid deer that don't shy away from the sounds of machinery and that is natural selection at it's best. Clean up the gene pool. I always hunt to second week of gun season as well after the stupid deer have been shot. Although I'll bet they all taste the same.
Above typed with tongue in cheek......
I like hearing quads when I'm deer hunting. Gets them on the move if it's quiet.
I think a lot has to do with location. Deer that live around farming areas are probably much more use to machinery like tractors, wheelers etc. Same thing in areas being logged the sound of a chainsaw means dinner to a deer. But go deep in the woods the deer are probably more sensitive to noise.
I agree with this in general I don't think the noise makes a big difference but if you are hunting only mature bucks as I do most times unless season is almost over and I need freezer filler. I think then hunting smarter deer maybe it decreases chances of success
One thing that is undeniable is that quads have gotten older folks and those with mobility disabilities back out and into the field where they want to be.
I sure see nothing wrong with that.
yup all animals get used to the sounds, same thing with me, watching the trail camera, the bears always came in right after i left, so when i go to my stand to hunt i just do the same routine, drive my bike up, insert bait, rattle the barrel and chain around, go park bike 100 yds away, go sit in stand... havent hunted past opening day in 2 years lol
even running the chainsaw, the deer get so used to you, sometimes they will come and eat the tree tops, as you are cutting at the other end of the tree...
i think bikes help in the way of they get alot of people into areas that wouldnt be hunted otherwise, as well as helping our aging population get into the bush... my 75 year old neighbour couldnt hunt without being able to use his bike to get to a stand...
I was joking earlier,Dah. I bought a side x side because of COPD.My hunting days were pretty much over,I couldn't walk 30 yards. With the all the meds, now I can walk about 100 yards on even ground. I'm waiting for my hunting disability card which we'll enable me to shoot from my sxs.
I get a little sad when I think of all the places that we used to frequent that are now off limits to an old guy in a truck or ATV. Places that I can no longer get to with my fishing gear etc.
When I have to downsize to a condo then I will also sell my guns......
Let's put it this way a farmer friend of mine feed or checks his horses using an ATV in the morning about 7:00 - 8:00 AM and the deer knows it. They come around the feed trough about the same time waiting for him pretty well every day.
These deer are not stupid and know when there could be feed in the grounds.
It's not unusual for a deer to stop and stare at him at 10 yards while doing this.
However having said this I will never hunt from the ATV but will use it to bring equipment or a partner straight to the tree stand or bring the carcass out.
I enjoy the walk to the field while I can but I know some of my friends are not able to anymore.
They might not be stupid coming to the sound of an ATV but they might be dead real quick!!
