Hi all, I am heading to Grundy next weekend. Does anyone know what species are in the lakes within the park?
cant remember the name but its the one behind the amphatheater. Nice pike and surprisingly huge bass. Only really seen them caught at dusk, good bite around that time.
Other lake is way back there, again cant remember the name. Good pike, bass and perch. Again good lake.
Canoe is the way to go.
Great PP, cant wait we are there in august. Hint; bears are everywhere, make sure you keep a clean campsite
I've got a travel trailer, so all my food and garbage is inside. I may get a prowler, but they shouldn't stick around my site. Thanks for the heads up though.
i found a map from the park listing the various species in the lakes. I'll have to give at least one a shot.
Caught some hammer handle pike in Gurd with a Mepps Black Fury tipped with a worm. Didn't get a chance to try the other lakes...... Drove the gravel road to the lake at end of the park, a bit narrow and only room for one vehicle to pass. Looked nice with an easy launch area once you get there.
Please post a report if you get the chance.

grundy has pike walleye, bass crappie, perch and even a few whitefish, gut has pike bass walleye, and crappie, cant remember what all gurd has but its a awsome bass fishing spot, and the lake at the end of the road, has walleye, pike, bass, and back when i worked there, there was like a 40 lb muskie that was caught out of it... bin almost 10 years since ive bin there...
gurd is pike and bass. Gets hit pretty hard but they are there.
Take your garbage to the waste site every night. Keeping in your camper is asking for trouble. If they smell it they may try to get it.
back when i worked there we used to have to chase bears to try to get them to stay away from campers... remember chasing a bear with a shovel, and my boss had a can of bear spray... was not paid enough lol one time a camper left the door open to the garbage garage, and another camper came along, seen the bear inside, closed the door and locked the bear in, then flagged us down and told us... i was like seriously! little nervous opening up that door lol used to be a old bear down the hwy at the dump... thing had to be 600 lbs, we used to dump garbage out of the dump truck and the stupid thing would be there eating the garbage as it was falling and hitting him in the head... no fears...
portage lake outside of the park on the other side of hwy 522, used to be great fishing back there, shallow and weedy at one end, and deep at the other. very very little fishing pressure, theres a old scouts camp on it... i think the last time i was over that way though, they pulled the bridge out so you couldnt drive there anymore... but could probably get a canoe in there...
Good fishing all around for sure. Fish early morning, late afternoon. You should have fun. Species already mentioned in previous posts.
Good luck
The lakes with in the campgrounds are heavily pressured and fish tended to be small. As others are saying the lake at the end of the park is the place to be. It drains into the Pickeral River and is where you can catch Walleye and generally larger Bass and Pike.
google "fish online". It's an online map by the mnr that tells you what is in what lake. Although other peoples input could be more accurate lol
never had much luck in the easily accessible lakes in the park. never put much effort into it though.
never made it to the lake at the back of the park that people speak of. I think that would be your best bet though. least amount of pressure/people.
use to camp there a few years back, lots of small hammer handles and some descent bass. Gut lake is always good for hammer handles,as is gurd. Top waters at dusk work good trolled from a canoe.
I have seen that 600 pound black bear at the dump near grundy lake! he came right up to the window of our truck and sniffed it while our dogs were going crazy, the he went and laid on his back in the ditch we have pictures somewhere but i was about 14 years old at the time.
I canoe to the very end of Grundy Lake its right near the canoe in sites great bass and pike fishing back there
@sylvain, I don't trust Fish On-Line. There are lakes where I know certain species are present and it says they aren't and the reverse is true, it says rainbows in a lake I have fished for almost 40 years, my uncles for even longer. Not one has ever caught a rainbow, much less heard of one being caught. One uncle owns a camp on e lake, so he has a good handle on what people are and are not catching there.
Just got back this afternoon. Mosquitoes are bad, bad, bad. My daughter and I fished Grundy Lake for about 2 hours on Saturday. The wind was blowing hard for a canoe. We had a hard time keeping it straight and moving forward. I spoke to many people on canoes and kayaks that we passed and no was admitting to catching anything. We found a weed bed and were trolling over it when I got a hit. After reeling in a 19" pike, I told my daughter I was going to release it. She convinced me to keep it. After getting ready to troll again and the wind pushing us off the weed bed, we trolled over the same spot. Another hit. This one pulling drag. I thought it was another pike, but turned out to be a walleye. 17.5 inches. Nice eater.

On Sunday, we hit Gurd lake. My daughter caught the first fish, a 20" pike. We parked out of the wind in a shallow bay and started casting. I managed to get a few hits on top waters and ended up catching three more pike, 15, 14 and 22" I threw the smaller ones back, but we kept the two largest fish. I don't remember catching pike like that on top water lures, but it was definitely a blast!
Nice job! That's a successful outing especially in a provincial park
