Back from Quebec

Had a great time over the last five days in the Rouyn-Noranda area. Lots of heat, lots of mosquitos, lots of food, lots of drink and lots of fish. Best of all; very few people.
We caught a ton of walleye, many pike and a few sauger. The average size for the walleye are on the small side (14" - 18"), but they're the good eating ones. We had a main fish fry with the larger group and then my room mate and I had our own the next night.
The pike are crazy in that lake. We had one break off then just sit there on the surface in a weird position. We netted it to see what was up and discover that it grabbed itself by the tail and would not let go. My buddy got his jig back and the fish was released. We had another grab a walleye and it would not let go, even after numerous runs and jumps, then they both got off. Another pike broke off with one of my buddy's crank baits in its mouth. He picked up the pliers and grabbed the pike by the top fin and retrieved his crank bait before the fish could swim away.
The largest walleye was just shy of 6 lbs.
I would suggest to anyone that enjoys being in the wilderness to explore this area.

Just east of Kearns, Ontario. We drove past some signs that said Angliers going along the 101.
It sure is a beautiful area. You're lucky to have a cottage there!

What were you using for walleye?
i'm heading to La Verendrye next month but have minimal experience fishing walleye. I could use some help!

We stuck with twister tails tipped with worms. However, I did get a couple on a spinner bait fishing for pike.
It seems we always have to fish close to the bottom. Many people use the bottom bouncers to make it easier.

I would also suggest using maribou jigs tipped with frozen minnows (no live bait allowed) and bounced off the bottom.

FYI. Worms are allowed, just no live minnows / leeches.

Yes, I think I remember buying worms......just never ended up using them I dont think. I stand corrected.

A local butcher goes up to La Verendrye often and he swears by the original Storm ThinFin in the 2 1/2" perch pattern for Walleye. If you want to troll deeper the Storm Hot 'N Tots are good for Walleye as well. Of course one can never neglect the good ole worm harness and evening jigging on a nice shoal. Good luck with your trip.

Just a little heads up for those that don't know yet. As of 2017 in Quebec NO minnows period, will be allowed. For those that use them for Pickerel at least there are alternatives like worms and leeches, but for gang troll Laker fishermen like me it's going to be more difficult to replace a real minnow, even if it is dead. Time to practice with plastics and scent I guess.

I wonder if this ban will affect the outfitter/tourism industry? A lot of fishermen are stuck in their ways after using the same methods for decades. I guess people will just have to change.

We have no problem catching walleye without minnows and save on the expense; less of a headache also. We always try trolling, but not much luck doing that this year. The other guys did more trolling and any fish they caught were on minnow baits such as rapalas and hot n tots. We had way more action by finding the fish and sitting on top of them with jigs. I can see the no minnows coming to Ontario soon; the ice fishing will be tougher for some because of it. People will just have to adapt, the unfortunate thing is some won't and they will always continue doing what they always have.

what a happy coincidence, i "caught" one of these lures at the cottage last weekend, when my smallmouth bass got hung up on another snagged line. i guess i put it to use in the La Verendrye

Try using a Coton Cordell behind your gangtroll about 16" depending on color may have to experiment works for me around here in Sudbury

I have fished in Quebec for many years we had a family cottage in Maniwaki and fished many lakes on Parc de la Verandrye the walleye fishing was always awesome and some big northerns were also caught nice to see you had a great trip thanks for the report.
