Hey everyone
I have a 16' legend with a 50 HP mercury 4 stroke efi. I have always had problems trying to get the boat to plane out.
I was told that i should change the prop, I think it has a 13 pitch on it now. 1 guy told me to go to a 15 pitch and another told me to go to a 11 pitch. Can anyone help me with this?? I want more snap from the start so i can get planned out faster..

Trim tab attached to your outboard just above prop? I put a bigger one on my 70 HP and it made a HUGE difference in trimming and stearing at high speed. The boat planes out very quickly now.
I believe you're looking for a lower pitch prop. The lower the pitch the higher the RPMs you'll achieve.
The torque tab on the outboard shouldn't really affect planing, but steering at speed.

Call up Mercury Marine and tell them your problem , they have people there that will work out what prop is required for your situation . They will ask for specs. like type or model of boat, number of passengers and how much gear you normally carry and then advise , worked for me and my 22 ft' starcraft Holliday model.

The prop is not your only problem
#1 problem is the Mercury name on it. They should rename themselves Lemoncury and paint them yellow.
trade it in for a 50hp honda or Yamaha. You won't have to worry about the prop or anything else for that matter.
There are such things as a high torque prop, I have one on my Yanmar.
Have you looked at weight distribution? For example I installed my boat battery at the front and leave the anchor and gear there as well. Helps with the boat planing faster and better. Also, have you looked into how you trim the motor. There is usually a sweet spot as well based on cargo / people on board.
Why Trim?
- When boat powers up from standing still to high speed thrust of the propeller suspended below the bottom of the boat causes the stern of the boat to push down into the lake. Trimming the motor to the extreme “down” position directs the thrust of the propeller upward to a small extent as well as forward, thus lifting the stern as the boat gains speed. The result is faster acceleration. Once the boat is up on plane, meaning it’s skimming across the water’s surface instead of pushing through the water, a motor trimmed completely down tends to push the bow of the boat down, now slowing the boat. To compensate, the helmsman can trim the motor up gradually until the boat rides fast and level.
On a manually trimmed boat, the motor can’t be trimmed while underway. The boater needs to experiment with various trim settings to determine which gives the best combination of acceleration and high speed operation.

it could be that simple, you might have too much weight in the back end of the boat.
Trim the motor up a bit and put some weight in the bow. Solved my problem.
Did the motor come with the boat? what is the hight of your transom? is the motor short or long shaft? Might be the wrong shaft for the boat.....
