I bought an old outboard to help out a friend a number of years back, I have never used it and I wanted to find out if there is actually any interest in vintage outboards.
The motor is a 1956 Johnson 10HP, I will have to give it a tune up but it used to start on a single pull.
Not looking to sell anything just yet, trying to find out if it is actually worth anything to anyone.
If it were a car it'd be considered vintage for sure but a '56 outboard is probably looked at more as a clunker. They were hard on gas and oil but kept the blackflies and skeeters away.
Now having said that I'm sure I'd like to see it mounted on a refurbished cedar strip.

I still have my old 25 Elto up in the barn, hoping that someone will want to fire it up. My homemade plywood boat is long gone....
Dealers just want you to replace anything over ten years old.
My dad has a 1954 or 56 Johnson SeaHorse 5.5hp. We use that motor every year on a 12ft aluminum. It purrs away all day long burning hardly any gas. We have original fuel tank as well.
These motors will run forever if they keep getting used. If they sit around in storage for too long the seals dry up inside. This one takes about 2 pulls to get going each time.

i brought out a 58 johnson 3 horse of a cousins that had be sitting for a long time probably 10 years at least started after a few pulls but i think has carb issues
The carb will need a good cleaning and new gaskets and probably the o/b will need all new seals. The water pump would have to be checked as well.
They have limited value. I'm a marine tech and less and less people are fixing those old ones. Probably worth about $250 in decent running shape, while the parts to tune it up are approx $150 (coils, points, condensors and carb kit)
I have a 3 Johnson , my dad purchased used about 1960. must have put a hundred miles on carrying it in , to back lakes. Also have a 5 Johnson , maroon that our hunt camp owned .Lots of good memories of the trips with these.
Can you still get parts for these, or someone who knows how to fix them. Probably as someone mentioned , carb parts maybe rings. old243
Most of those old ones also need a pressurized fuel tank unless they have been retrofitted with a fuel pump.
Those tanks in good condition can be hard & expensive to find.
Most of the stuff is available, but you need a working knowledge of the old ones as parts catalogs no longer go back that far. I'm in Buckhorn if you need a knowledgeable tech to help you resurrect one of those old girls. ;)Quote:

Takes a lot to wear out a set of rings in those things. Not to mention if it's that far gone, nobody is paying the labour to fix it.Quote:

Mine is a 2hp OMC. Mechanic tells me he has the parts but not the time.....season is over for the year now anyway. I do have an old 25Hp Elto from the fifties that is free to good home as well....
