Lindsay Ontario

Hey Everyone!
I'm moving to Lindsay, Ontario for school in September, I'm from Southwestern Ontario (Chatham) so this will be my first time hunting in Central Ontario.

I don't really know the area very well, and the crown land atlas by the MNR isn't working very well for me.
Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction for some upland bird/small game hunting spots.
I'm referring to public hunting land, but if someone wants to share some private spots, I'll be glad to have a hunting buddy.

Can't help you with spots in that area but I did go there for school as well. There will be lots of like minded people there and you might be able to buddy up with someone.

I went to Fleming as well. If you have a car go for a drive and knock on doors. People are nice and if you respect the property they will let you hunt. I rember stopping to ask an older gentleman if I could do some grouse hunting and a few hours later after helping him bleed his diesel tractor lines he let me go. Great spot lots of birds. Went back a few years after I was done school and he was ok with me using it still. Bring your fishing rod, great pickerel fishing at the locks. When they start to spawn its cool to see all the eyes light up at night with a flash light. The place gets packed or did when I was there.

Yup, just bring your rods and guns. There will be plenty of people to hook up with there. I graduated in 98', and never fished so much as I did when I went to school there. Good luck, it's in a great spot to hunt and fish. Lots of ducks too.

I graduated in 98 as well from the drilling program. What did you graduate in livebates

Did you find any work in it. I've been doing it for the past 12 years, taking a little break now though.

Ya I drilled for about 6 years doing environmental and geotechnical. Bounced around from there for years then got a few tickets and landed in the gas industry. I do miss drilling though, traveling around northern ontario was a thrill in my early 20's. I always spent more than I made though.:)

Once you get there it shouldnt be hard to meet some fellow hunters who can show you around. I believe there is a public land forest just north of Fenelon (Burnt River maybe? I went hunting there once or twice with my wife but can't recall what its called). I'd suggest taking up waterfowl hunting as it can be superb around Lindsay, and if you can acquire a small boat Sturgeon Lake is just north of town and has good public access and lots of marsh.

If all else fails go knocking on farmers doors.

Not highjack the forum ,but I graduated Drill & blasting in 1987. We did hunt grouse up there but it was so long ago I don't remember details. Sorry.

I took Geotechnical Engineering Technology at Fleming and graduated in 1997. Great school to go to.

I bet everyone went for the fish and wildlife program........then once they got you in they tell you there is no jobs in it and pick something else....lol. Then they sell you on drilling and blasting...100% job placement rate....yeah because nobody wants to do it lol. But it was a fun school I can admit. I remember missing an exam once because we got into some good grouse numbers lol. Told the teacher our car broke down. We still had our hunting gear on hahahah.

It was funny when I went. The school was divided....1/2hunters 1/2 tree huggers. My buddy brought a deer head in one day for a project and almost started a riot lol.

This is off-topic a little, but, maybe worth mentioning. Are you staying in residence and if so, what's the school's policy re: firearms? I have a hunch I might know what it might be.

You probably have other living arrangements to be considering brining a firearm, a safe/secure/legal way to store it, etc.

When I was there we were allowed firearms in residence.

Ahhh good ole residence, the parties we had there 7 days a week.

There is enough work for every graduate of F&W provided you are willing to move. Same goes for Drilling and Blasting. The oil sands are looking for both.

I graduated in '04 from EnviroTech before going to Trent in ptbo. That region is excellent for small game and bird hunting, and being in school there was no shortage of time to scout and hunt. I would contact the conservation authority and ask them if they have any land parcels where hunting is allowed.
