Do people use the 'substitute' powders in their Flintlocks ?
Once when I had a momentary laps of judgment. Lol. Never had much luck and fouled way to badly.
There are the pa pellet flintlocks. Not sure how dependable they are.
Thanks for the heads up on a PA Flinter....I didn't know they existed. Not a bad alternative to be able to get a modern ML in a flintlock.
My question is more geared to the Old Kentucky flintlocks, I was wondering is anyone had used or tried Triple 7 FFFg in the older guns. Would it be OK in the flash pan ? Would it work OK if you used BP in flash and the T7 for the load ?
We were using y7 in ate flintlocks with lubed conical Minnie balls. Way to much fouling. Spent more time cleaning and trying to remove Jammed ram rods. Not a fun day at the range.
Some people put 5 grains if BP in the breach then top up with 777. More reliable ignition than with just the 777
I was told I could use "duplex loads" where there is a small amount of Goex and the rest modern powder. Lots of reading on net. Google flintlock duplex loads.
I have a friend who claims to use "Jim Shockley's Gold" powder as the main charge in his Traditions Kentucky flintlock with a priming charge of FFFFg.
Most flintlock shooters I know are so traditional that they'd give up shooting before they used anything but black powder!
I have duplexed loads before but found it a PIA so I stopped. Would it work straight up T7? Probably but would it work reliably is really the question. I'll try it next time out and let you know. The worst thing that can happen is I'll have to blow a load out with my CO2 EZ Unloader. lol

That's exactly what I said Pete, when the guy asked me the question...and I quote: "probably but since is not traditional I can see that they would" :)
I was looking at the vent hole on his Flintlock and it is very small, but like he said he says, it only takes one spark. So as long as the powder is fine (FFFg) I would think it would go OK.
I read they had problem with Blackhorn 209 and ignition with the reduce the 209 primers and gyst had to switch back to the shotgun primers so I don't inagine it would work. But T7 should.
Damn I wish I hadn't got to play with his Flintlock...that's going to be a costly mistake :)
TC Firstorm is your huckleberry but I'm not sure if they're still available.

No I want a traditional Flintlock....my question was just curiosity to find out if guys have tried shooting T7/Pyrodex out of their Flinter's.
I was looking an absolutely beautiful, custom made Flintlock that my buddy's Dad owns on Sun.....the sad thing is he's a collector not a shooter....chances are this gun will never fire a patch and ball thru it.
My hunt continues....
Ahhhh, you wishes fer a fancy gun does ya? LOL Me too but they're outside my budget at the moment. A TVM is on my wish list for sure. The main thing as I understand it, is that the sub's are harder to ignite. I have used T7 and Pyrodex in my caplocks (Lyman GPH / TC Renegade) and it has worked fine.
I'll let you know how I fair out with T7 in my flintlock. (Lyman GPR)
They are both considered "Traditional" in function. In looks, somewhat like a Hawken/Missouri rifle.

I shot a TRADITIONS flinter for about 5 years then gave it to a family member......tried all kinds of propellant.......setteled on 3F goex main charge and in the pan.......... I used only good quality ENGLISH FLINTS from PELOUSE TRADING CO. Idaho/ opened up the hole in the insert and coned the inside/ deeoened and polished the pan.......after which I NEVER,repeat,NEVER had another miss fire and ignition was very fast........ JIM SHOCKEY,who has a guiding service here on the island, sells his GOLD......I tried it without success in my smokepole. in a caplock its a different story.........but I have a LYMAN TRADE RIFLE, a SAFARI,arms HAWKINS and a T/C new Englander all 50 cal. AND I USE 3F in all 3. on occasion I have used 2 f ......but FFFG has been the way toi go for me....JMHO

Welcome to the Forum, Glenno. Have you seen Huntaway's "3 shot challenge" thread for muzzle loaders?
