Painted the wife's kayak....Not good

Well I started the job of painting the wife's kayak yesterday and even used a coat of primer so the camo paint job would stick better.

I went in and bought a small can of Primer paint and had the colour mix. I explained to the guy at the store that I was painting a "PLASTIC" kayak, not drywall or metal.

Now the primer paint went on like a dream, so I left it to dry and cure.:) Dried nice and smooth, but I looked at it this morning and it is coming off like a snake shedding it's skin. :scream:
If I can't get the primer to stick what the heck can I do?:confused:

Was the canoe waxed previously? That would have to be stripped for anything to stick properly

I have painted plastic lawn furniture and have used Krylon paint with good success.
I did not use a primer , just used my pressure washer on the furniture to strip of the years of weathered grime , the paint is still on after about 8 years.
Krylon is one of the very few paints that sticks to "plastic".

X2 on the krylon, give it a thorough sanding first as well.

OK I washed the surface and cleaned it before painting so figured it would have removed wax/coatings. When the paint went on it stuck hard and fast, so the peeling was a surprise. I got Krylon Sprays to do the camo pattern, so maybe I'll just go get a few cans in the right colour for a base, and restart it. It's going to rain here on and off till Wednesday. Not much time to redo it before Thursday Morning.
It's almost like something came out of the plastic and lifted the paint. Maybe the washing did not get all of the coating off.
Next step...Pressure wash the paint off.
If you think I am not happy..you should see the wife.

The biggest problem is that she bought a "BRIGHT" red kayak for hunting...:whacked:

The more I think about it the worse feeling I have about this project...:sad:

acetone will melt some plastics.............a good scrubbing to remove the lose paint and a light sanding with a 1000 wet sand paper and a bucket of water to clean and keep the sand paper wet should prepare the surface for paint..........

Wash the kayak with dish soap. The dish soap will cut through any wax on the plastic then scrub the kayak with a green scotch bright pad for good adhesion.

Did the dish soap wash before painting...The paint went on and dried nice. last night a little scrapped off when I turned it over. I wanted the top facing down. This morning it was starting to crack. hit it with that power washer tonight and the paint came off like a sausage skin. I am going to remove the rest of the paint tomorrow, and let it dry in the sun. I will try a Krylon paint can and see if it sticks.

I only have four cans in four colours to work with hope it covers it.

You could try washing it with TSP. I use that stuff to wash whatever I'm going to paint. Mix up a good strong batch but it will also strip your hands of oils and fats too so use gloves or a brush.

Maybe another way to look at it-since likely you will use the canoe for travelling on the water body ,would just a plain camouflage net take care of concealing the red color while on shore hunting? Sure it would take care of the paint job.:D

get your self some steel wool scruff the canoe really good, wash it down let it dry and take the tsp solution give it a good wipe down. Once its dried apply the Krylon. if you want to try and smooth out the scruff marks try 2 light coats of primer.

If this fails and you have no choice but to do something, I'd be contacting the manufacturer for suggestions and talking to local body shops as they paint plastic all the time.

Looked great till the next morning. Power washed tonight and the paint came off in sheets.

I then washed it again with dish soap using a sanding block to scrub it. Then I rinsed it down with water.
After it drys and I will try to paint it again. The surface feels different now, less slick.

After a sanding, would washing it down in acetone help any to really get it clean before painting?

To permanently colour PVC (virtually all recreational kayaks are made from this) use petroleum dye in a methyl-ethyl-ketone base. No sanding required but a surface clean is advisable. MEK base will dissolve a layer a few 1/1000s of an inch deep on the plastic and open microscopic spaces between the plastic molecules. After application the MEK evaporates off completely and the dye is left permanently adhered to these spaces.

You would probably have to order the dye online but the MEK base is readily available as clear PVC pipe primer at most plumbing wholesalers. I use a brand made by Oatey and it is mostly MEK with a few other solvents thrown in.

Did a quick read of the Krylon Fusion paint MSDS sheets and it is similar except it is in an acetone base (similar properties to MEK) with a few other solvents thrown in for good measure. It likely works in the same manner.

I have the Acetone and plan to wipe it down, let it dry and use the Krylon I bought..Cross your fingers...I need the darn thing for tomorrow morning...

The primer coat looked great the first time too..till it it peeled off the next morning..:sad:

I made need to go back over it later and do repairs and hit it with a sealer to protect it from scrapes more.

Well it's scratched chipped rubbed, and still hanging on..:thumbs.

It must be doing me some good slide up on two geese....got one.

Gotta quickly chime in before it gets ugly again. What you need is wax and grease remover. I use DuPont wax and grease remover for all my paint jobs. You can purchase this at carquest or certain UAP/napa stores. Here is the biggest advice I can give you.......go to an automotive paint store!!!! I would suggest any Carquest or Napa that has a dedicated Paint technician there. The Napa in newmarket is great. They will set you up with what you really need.

Most pvcs that are moulded have a release agent inside. I saw a vid on you tube of a guy doing fourwheeler plastics and he was heating the plastic with a torch quickly until it looks wet and wiping off right away with rubbing alcohol. Apparently this process draws out the release agent.

One of the plants I work at makes plastic jugs.. They run the jug through a fire ring before they get labeled or the paint won't stick

When we going to see your paint job on a kayak. I know you will not be painting that canoe any time soon...Hard to get paint to stick UNDERWATER.

Yeah the acetone wash will make a huge difference. You want to make really sure you get rid of every last speck of old wax or original paint build up... otherwise you're going to have issues with patchiness later.

Don't despair. Once you've got the proper gear/cleaners/paint and a plan it doesn't seem so daunting.

Get a light abrasion attachment for a grinder, dremel or buffing tool (if you don't have any of these you can do the same thing by hand with sanding blocks, it'll just take longer) and rough up the entire surface. Pay close attention to anywhere the original paint built up.

Clean it with the acetone, and have tack cloth on hand to wipe all areas immediately before you put the primer on them (especially if you're not in a very well controlled environment).

Should go off without a hitch then.

It has lots of space under the deck for water proof bags, so I think it could even be used to overnight trips. Or at least you could pack spare dry clothes and gear in case I took another ride over a beaver dam or took a spill in cold weather. The sit on top design would make getting on and off easy too.
Of course you still need a canoe with a 700-800lbs capacity as a barge to haul a moose out of the woods. Maybe some thing like this:

I do have a canoe available... 19foot cedar strip.... could hold a few moose in that.

I can tell you that down here it may seem strange for guys to take a few kayaks and or Canoes and start paddling up and down small rivers and streams looking for deer or moose.
What is not strange is the fact that it works, lets you get a lot farther back in the bush with a lot less work then a quad.

I know it works because that in one of the ways that moose are hunted in many places.

There are lots of rivers up north that one could travel and hunt along.

Dawn dish soap.
this is a item that will be placed in water, please think about that approach.
At my Auto Detailing business we use Dawn to strip waxes,sealants,glazes prior too painting buffing etc. and it is environmentally friendly. Had you used this in the first place, a simple wet sand with 2000, 3000 then 5000( good luck finding it!) grit sandpaper the paint would have looked professional. Another option is too use Duplicolor, minimum 6 coats, then a earth friendly clearcoat. Above all that, use a fine Carnauba wax. This will ensure the longevity of the paint. Using products like Acetone, Harsh Degreasers, TPS is not a smart move. regardless of how well you work it, rinse it, it will leach into the body, and leach out.

Kayak was painted for second time back in September...Been chasing birds in it ever since..
