100 yd grouping with my CVA Wolf

Took advantage of this beautiful afternoon and went to shoot my muzzleloader…. I really enjoy shooting this gun (CVA Wolf)… It has a really nice trigger and shoots so smooth.... I can’t believe how well it shoots for a gun with a scope package for under $300……

The first shot is off a bit (possible from an oily barrel-should have ran a patch through it after pulling it out of the safe) but you got to like shots 2, 3, 4 and 5…. Less than 1” group with 2 pellets of the triple 7...

Hoping to get a chance to use it during the muzzleloader season...

Contrary to what some guys desire, a muzzle loader is a 'Hunting' rifle...not a sniper rifle.

I'm always impressed that you can get such a great groupings at 100 yrds from these 'Basic' cheap Muzzle Loaders. Your results are a great example that you don't have to spend a lot to get an accurate rifle for hunting.

The 1st shot is called a fouling shot...never take a clean barrel out to hunt, you only get one shot so the 1st ones counts :)

I have taken 2 moose and a number of deer with those Hornady 300 grain SST bullets and they work great. One of the shots was with my smokeless ML at 160 yards. A complete pass threw of the chest. He ran a 50 yard circle and dropped. Nice shooting.

I always shoot on a clean, dry barrel. When I sight in I clean between shots. I want to know where my first shot is going to go.

I have the same gun in black....run the same sabots ....only difference is I use the white hots powder I find it cleans up nice and can shoot a few shots before running a patch without changing much POI....greta gun for the price I feel as well....I would like to put a better scope on tho I am running a bushnell sportsman 3x7 right now.

I use 2 whitehots and with partitions or Barnes can do close to moa with my wolf.

That's the way I think too.....my mentor insisted that because his fouling shot was off, and that he liked the grouping he got once the barrel was warm and dirty he left his gun dirty after the day before the hunt. I argued that when we went hunting the barrel would be cold, so wouldn't it be better to establish a 'zero' baseline under 1st shot conditions...ie clean and cold.

He'd have nothing to do was such heresy :)

I swab between shots and really don't notice a 'fouling' shot. My 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 8th all pretty much go where they are suppose to go too. An inch or two at a 100 yds is not a big deal when your shooting .50 cal. :)

After the first shot ot of my traditions each bullet lands a bit high and a bit left of the previous. At first I thought it was the scope but after a quick swab I near perfectly replicated the fist four shots.

I too always establish my zero on a cold clean barrel as I am a big fan of the "one and done"

Nice shooting Fratri, lots of good reports on those rifles, everyone who has one seems to really like it. Shows you don't have to put yourself in the poorhouse to get a great shooting rifle. A lot of the muzzleloading community believe that a fouling shot or a squib load is the way to go. The problem I see with it is that you are hunting with an uncleaned gun, not a great idea in rain and damp weather such as we get in Ontario during hunting season. Moisture and burnt powder are not going to do your barrel much good.

That's good shooting, congrats! What scope are you using?

Trick is to fire a primer at home they night before you hunt. Primer will eliminate a lot of the oil in the barrel.

I just bought a traditions buckstalker. I cleaned it out before usage. The guy told me to put bore butter down the barrel. I did this. The first one was easy to go down. The third I had to really put some weight into it. Didn't put a forth. Is this normal? I didn't get an opportunity to sight it in. Any suggestions. Btw. Great group F. I hoping for the same once I get her figured out.

I don't have that much experience behind me but what I have done is just run a wet patch then dry patch through it after a couple shots... Now my wet patch is just me moistening my patch with a little spit, run the wet (spit) patch and then a dry patch through. I do this after 2-3 or 4 shots.... I know it does get a little tougher to push the bullet down after a couple of shots but when I notice it getting tougher I run the spit and dry patch through and we are good to go.

Not sure running a lube before you fire is a good idea, wouldn't that make the powder stick to the barrel? Maybe that's why it may be tougher for you to push the bullet down, accumulated powder is causing it to get stuck? I also crack open the breech after every few shots (from what I read keeps it from seizing up)

Its the scope that came with the gun package, I think its a cheaper simmons model... For what I paid the package brand new, it does a fantastic job...

I'll give that a try. Yeah, when I cleaned it you could see lots of residue powder in the barrel. What's bore butter used for? Got lots of spit. Thanks for the tip.

Bore butter is used to season the barrel. You do not need to use it every time you shoot, only when breaking in your muzzle loader or after a long storage period. Store with bore butter in the barrel, wipe out the excess before starting again. Rubbing alcohol is excellent for wiping between shots. I used it when I was shooting 777. It removed the crud ring without cleaning too much. Now I use BH209 and can shoot about 8-10 shots without any cleaning or effecting my grouping.

Indeed. I get fantastic groups with a thorough cleaning and an hour or two between shots!:thumbup:
