I recently purchased an ruff tough kennel and I was planning to transport my pup in the back of my pick up truck(do not have bed cover). I just wanted to know if a typical insulated kennel covers will keep him warm enough during transport on those November/December morning- there will be some highway driving.

Provided he has a pad to lay on, and he's not sopping wet when you load him up combined with outside air temp / wind from the drive.
I do the same with mine.
Also, find a way to secure it so it's not thrashing about the back of the truck when you get on breaks / accelerator, or bumpy roads.

You can also buy a remote temperature sensor with a display in your truck for peace of mind.
If it's well insulated it shouldn't be a problem and strap it down.
I currently have my dog in a crate in the back seat and there is times that the smell makes me wish he was separated from the cab.
I don't normally have to worry about a wet dog as Misty doesn't like the water too much, but I swear she's half pig because she loves the mud - that being said, she still rides in the cab with me. I just put down an old blanket for her to lay on. She's been trained pretty well in vehicles not to roam.
Whether inside the cab, or the box, we crate the dog, for safety reasons. Inside the cab, that is a 60lb projectile in a crash, safer for her, and us.
In the box of the truck, probably safer in the crate, then being tossed out, or free to roam in the box / tied to it.

What do you say to the breeders, trialers, with the multi dog carriers that sit in the beds of their truck? should they just all be brought in the cab?
I'm curious to see what the other dog folks have to say.
After being pulled over by OPP for having my dog loose in my truck , I carry my dog in the bed with a tied down harness. Officer told me he either has to used the seatbelt (with special harness) or in the bed with conventional harness.
Hey turkeyrookie, that is the reason i asking. I seen a fair amount guys with their hunting dogs in kennels in bed of trucks and the dog don't seem to don't mind it or enjoy it.

Put a heavy old quilt over the crate too .
From what I've read , use a wire crate not a plastic crate . If there is a rear end collision, plastic makes shards that can pierce the dog .

the general law:
"Every person responsible for transporting animals in Canada must ensure that the entire transportation process including loading, transit and unloading - does not cause injury or undue suffering to the animals."
Transportation Practices
It is illegal to cause undue suffering to an animal at any point in the transportation process. Practices that can help protect animals during transportation include:
- using loading and unloading facilities as well as containers and transport vehicles suitable to the animals being loaded;
- using movement devices (e.g. pig boards) that do not frighten the animals or cause injury or undue suffering;
- providing adequate space and headroom for animals to stand in a natural position;
- providing feed, water and rest at required intervals;
- providing adequate ventilation for all animals;
- providing non-slip, textured footing surfaces suitable to the animals being transported;
- providing protection from the weather; or
- providing immediate attention, including veterinary treatment at the scene if necessary. If an animal becomes unfit for transport during the trip, it must be cared for, treated or euthanized.
In the spring,summer, and fall mine is in his crate in the bed of my truck with 4 ratchet straps holding it down. In the winter he comes in the truck and we have a harness that attaches to the seat belt.
When he comes out and sees his crate in the truck, he knows he is always going somewhere fun. By the time my truck hits the sidewalk he is laying down until he can smell the water. Then he is bouncing in the crate.
In the winter he just lays down and rests his head on the car seat and sleeps with my daughter, well being strapped to the seat belt for safety of all in the car or truck.
Mud River makes an insulated crate cover which has tie downs for securing the crate with cover on down on the truck bed. Window covers which can ve removed when the temperature in not too cool. Available in both brown and Max-4 camo.

We run hounds all year long and they always go in te dog box. Hard sided box with vent holes that can be open in the summer and closed in the winter ratchet strapped in so it doesn't slide around and it is great. Can easily take 6 hounds or just 1 and they are light enough that my wife can put it in and out with no problem. We just put some woo shavings or straw in the bottom. I have a cap on my truck but what I do is put their crate from in the house, strap it down in the bed and my 2 labs Love it back there. I even installed a 12V plug in the bed and run a fan in the summer for them.
The fan combined with the removable front window keeps it much cooler than ambient back there even when truck is sitting in the sun while we are camping etc.

check plate aluminum... non insulated ... closable vents ... snow covers on doors ( not for temp control.. but to keep snow out of straw) from Christmas till march ... after march .... same box ... vents wide open... door covers off... shavings on floor .... dogs in the back, not up front.... accident waiting to happen if I let them all in the cab... lol

I do not know where the OPP officer pulled that from , because the O.H.T.A. does not mention it. If I am wrong could one of our ex-police on here let me know what section it is? Just spent some time looking it up. NO SUCH LAW. If it is in your lap , you would be charged with crowding the drivers seat.Quote:

There is no specific section that states a dog needs to be secured inside the cabin of a vehicle. However, it is the officer's discretion whether or not it is a safety concern - meaning they can be charged with careless driving if the animal is at large and appears to be affecting the driver's ability to operate the vehicle safely (sec 130 HTA) or crowding the driver's seat (sec 162 HTA)
Thanks that's what I thought. The dog has to be doing something that would distract the driver, just like a kid. Not sleeping soundly on the back seat.

I have 3 that go in the back seat but when my toller is wet she tends to go nuts (if you can imagine a toller doing that). So now when she's wet she goes in her crate which is in the bed all strapped in. Currently making a cover for her crate. Doing a trip up north in a few weeks and 2 dogs will be crated on the trailer. Front of trailer has a sheet of plywood on it to help block wind. Will probably cover crates and then tie them down depending on the weather. Also just picked up one of these crates tonight. Thought it would be handy for in the back seat, in the blind, or camping in the summer. It all folds up into a bag just like a camping chair (and about the same size). For $45 I figured it would be worth a shot.
In case of an accident the ambulance attendents look after the humans ( driver & passengers) police look after the cause , control traffic and not one of them is responsible for your dog if the car door is opened and your dog jumps out on the highway . If your dog is crated the police will call the local animal control or nearby vet . They will notify your family where the dog is placed .
Be sure your crate is securely anchored . In April our friend and his dog were killed in a car accident . His dog was crated but not tied down in the back of his van. The crate rolled over and over and the dogs neck was broken . In your car or in the back of the truck the dog should be confined and comfortable . If it is running loose on 400 or 401 it does not have a chance. Usually they will not go to a stranger and chances of being hit by a car are high.
As with most provinces, there is no Ontario law stating that animals riding inside a vehicle must be secured. “If the animal is not secured in the back of a pickup truck, however, drivers can be charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. And if something happens to the animal, the owner could be charged under the OSPCA Act or Criminal Code for permitting distress on an animal,” says Brad Dewar with the Ontario SPCA.
mine rides in his strapped in crate in the bed of my truck. once the weather turns cold I use a kennel cover for warmth. the crate is no isssue he has flown across Canada and been driven to the east coast in this manner.

Like 4 weight I have always had a table in the back of my truck. Theses days I have a 3 kennel crate system bolted to it. In hunting season, it comes out and I put Vari kennels in to give me more room for gear.
A few yrs ago my truck was rear ended hard. Dogs were fine.
Our Britt loves to wander through the car or truck cab. Identifying this as a hazard, we quickly got a seatbelt harness for him and secure it to the back seat. If we are going hunting or running where it is likely he will get wet or dirty, we transport him in his crate. The crate goes in the back seat of my Jetta. There is not a lot of room left over, so I slide the passenger seat all the way back, which prevents the crate from moving.

if she stays on the floor I cannot see a safety concern (assuming your dog doesn't jump around and stays put where you say).
depending on your car/truck and other things you might carry, there is generally always enough space to fit a dog at the passager side (on the floor) when the seat is far back, and you can even squeeze another person in (dog between legs) if you need to.
PS: remember to turn the passanger airbag off
The safety concern, even from a dog that just stays put for the ride, stems in the off chance you are in an accident. Now you have a dog flying about the vehicle, amongst anything else not tied down. Which is not safe for the dog itself, or anyone else in the vehicle.Quote:
