Hunt group evictions?

Just watched the video of the "nightmare" hunting accident video and it got me thinking, has anyone here ever banned/evicted/removed a person from their hunt group for one or multiple offences?
Our group has, we don't put up with chronic bad shot cripplers. Mistakes do happen, but when someone shoots and hits multiple deer and has nothing to show for it (and then boasts about how many "hits" they made) resisting the urge to tie their gun around their head like they do in the cartoons, we show them the door. We have done this 3 times in the 22 years I've been hunting. (Each one repeated this activity 3 consecutive years in a row, basically 3 strikes you're out)
So has anyone else done this for whatever reason with their groups? What was the reason for the removal?

Only one, the guy would use the bathroom and every time there would be poop everywhere, seat , sink, floor, towel.

Never been an issue for our groups.

A "friend", not so much anymore, was checking his traps, so tagged along, my other buddy drove, he got out to check the first one, loaded his gun, got back in truck, continued on, hopped out, left gun in truck, noticed it was still loaded.

Unloaded, left bullet on the seat.

Get to the next trap, he re-loads, gets out, gets back in, leaves it loaded, this played out 3 times.

Finally the last time my buddy who was driving said "I guess you don't get the hint do you, three times we unloaded your gun in the truck, you're done."

Think that was the last time either of us saw him, he has since moved back to southern Ontario.

Not banned, but put on the backburner for expecting game while bringnig very little to the table and then getting angry when the hunts didn't yield and abundance of game.

We had a boozer and his friend who always got carried away with their drinking, late nights, loud, obnoxious. Next morning they'd always sleep in when they should have been on the stand hunting.
The following year they weren't asked back.

Hunted upland with a guy awesome shot but a bit to fast to the trigger and hunted with a little too much intensity of letting nothing get away. After a couple of warnings that his shot decision was for a lack of words too "aggressive" decided not to hunt with him anymore.

First fella - Kicked a fella out of my first gang a few years ago for holding off for "trophy" shots - we're meat hunters, and we had plenty of doe tags but he admitted to not shooting a couple different does during the week because he wanted a buck. He got his buck with a different gang the next week.

The next year rolled around and we formed a new gang, and a brand new camp, and new land - this fellow spoke personally with owner of the land at the time (which changed hands for the final time the last week of rifle season) without us knowing it and got himself invited to the gang. We found out and were a bit shocked but figured, if we laid the law down he'd play by the rules. (1) he was supposed to hunt the whole week, he showed up on the Thursday; (2) He was asked, when he finally DID show up to get ready for the afternoon hunt on Thursday - he snapped at the dog man and told him "Settle down I just f**king got here!"; (3) He was put on a watch and proceeded to wander around during a dog push, the dog man and dogs pushed deer right to his stand and he wasn't there.

We spoke to him after the remainder of the week and told him he wasn't welcome back. Three weeks ago we got a call from him telling us he was excited for the season and even got a doe tag for 63A - he was told again, he was not hunting with us and was not welcome back, he said he was going to speak with the dog man (in our gang, the dog-man, who is also a camp owner, is a hunt-boss -- who make final decisions if necessary) and they exchanged words that ended up in a fist fight.

Needless to say, he's still not coming back.

Second fella - shooting at sounds - "I heard one in the bushes so I shot at it", "I heard one running down the trial, so I shot at it". He lasted two days before we asked him to leave.

One guy would bring a flask with him into the bush, he was told once and did it again, he was out, no drinking in the bush for us.

We had other issues and left the gang rather then deal with them.

The weird thing is that the son of the guy who would bring booze into the bush would sit on stand with his 30-30 cocked and used the no-trespassing signs on our own property as target practice, not a bad pair to lose.

The hardest one I remember was when a long-time and well-respected member of our deer camp had to be told it was time for him to hang up his gun for good. For the safety of all, the effects of dementia could no longer be ignored.

That would be a tough one.

Only once a friend many many years ago and he was the reason I hunted alone after that. Almost shot me once, shot over my head once, Ahole also shot a hole in a boat someone had left for people to use. The shooting over my head while duck hunting was the last time we ever hunted together.

That would be the heartbreaker of all heartbreakers,for sure,short of having someone pass away. I hope you found him other things to do around camp that didn't involve shooting,at least,for the short term.

Back in high school, three if us basically grew up in hunting families and spent quite a few hunts together. All upland/small game/water fowling. We had a newly educated hunter joins us for a hunt. As we gathered together in a circle, the three experienced ones unloaded our guns and pointed in a safe direction. Newbie had his single shot pointed at the ground in the venter. We politely asked him to break his action so that we could confirm his unloaded status. He repeatedly insisted it was empty. After a few requests, one of us grabbed the gun out of his hands, much to his surprise and broke open the action. The ejector flung out the shell in the chamber. We temporarily confiscated his ammo for the duration of the hunt, expressed our thoughts about his lies and deceit and he was never invited with us again.

i can look past others hunting ethics that do not agree with mine as long as they are not illegal, but I will not abide by repeated legal infractions. Safety violations are a zero tolerance policy for me. The only exception for safety violations are young, new hunters, who get extensive coaching and enforcement before bad safety violations become habits.

I had a few guys evict themselves from my camp, best thing that ever happened.

Had one guy that would shoot grouse with the 30-06 from the blind or the stand. After the second incident he got the boot

I've been here. 2 years ago I had to tell my dad that his best friend could no longer hunt with us. After a stroke, he became not only unsafe, but unreliable and easily confused. :(

It's unfortunate that there are so many groups that have had to kick a member out. I've heard the same type of stories from a few people I've met in my search for hunting spots. I was told by one land owner that he no longer allows anyone to hunt on his property because the last person felt it was ok to drive across the owners fields in his truck to get to his spot. I've heard from other property owners that they don't allow people on their property because past hunters couldn't follow the rules. So my hunt to find land(like so many of us) continues :)

We were out along with the OPP searching for a guy (found safe & sound) who used to know the bush like the back of his hand. It can be anyone of us someday.

Agreed. I told my dad that he was welcome to come along, but not out on the hunt. That one hurt more than the girl I have kicked out this year. She's come the past 4 years while contributing very little to the hunt. Then became very nasty this summer when she needed a favour. I should have known. She's a Liberal. :p

My old man is a was a Liberal but he is coming around. Mom is a Conservative. My wife was NDP but she has come around and now votes Conservative.

She does. Camo'd Grumman on a galvanized trailer with a 15 Merc. That's what caused our falling out in the first place. She owes me a bit over $200 for repairs on it.

yes. three times. in our group regardless of who shoots or doesn't we all shared meat. we had one guy who shot a doe and said he missed we found out by trail cam that he went back later to find him pulling it out at noght to not have to share. another guy who had a tendency to shoot deer and not bother looking for them after tracking 150 yards... and one other guy for never paying bills oon time or helping in any way.

that's tough. we got a few old timers who rent comin back to the woods this year as well.

Yeah .yeah .yeah some of you pups kick the ol lads out because they have a disease that you think makes it unsafe . I still dog with one that is over 80 yet was diagnosed over 10 years ago . Shame on you young priicks calling them out like that . I wouldn't allow you to walk in my shadow or theirs . They can still be a valued member in any camp and maybe still a good one . . Bet they gut clean and you young clowns pass out eh . ?

In some cases, I might agree. But if it's posing a danger to themselves and others by handling a gun, then IMO, it's justified. There are camps like mine that have a limited # of beds, and spots. If you can accommodate a loyal member, and have them assist by dogging, or being camp cook, then absolutely allow them to continue to contribute.

The camp I belong to has a group of older gentlemen come up the 1st week, and my group up in week 2. We're slowly overlapping them, as the week 1 group doesn't actually go out and sit the watches very much anymore.

I agree that the older lads should still be part of the hunt as long as their health allows. The week at the camp is not just about what you can kill, it is about the old stories, card games and just keeping the fires going, so many of these fellows have a hard time giving this up.

I absolutely agree. As long as their overall health is good and their not in the advanced stages of Ahlziemer's,every accommodation should be made to ensure they're still valued members and their contributions are welcomed and appreciated. Simply ensure that firearms and ammo are secure. When the time comes for them to formally "retire",they'll know and they'll let you know,too. Respect for their venerable status should demand it. Just my 2 cents....

In extreme cases I can see having to "ask" and old timer to hang it up but I would never have the balloons to "tell" them they are done. Without the old guys we would know nothing. Who teaches us to hunt and fish? In our camp the old guys come first. We will work extra hard at building them blinds and cutting a full road into said blind if we must all to try and help these guys get a deer. You never know when a which deer will be their last. Dont forget those old guys that are our parents could have left us as no more than a damp sock. Who are we to tell them what to do.

Considering the mature guys in our camp are the ones who own all the land and accommodations, asking one of them to quit would be a direct and immediate safety hazard........

We lost an older camp member this past year, my uncle - my father's brother. I never got to hunt with my father, he passed many years ago but hunting with my uncle was equally as great.

He retired himself last year, after several strokes, and other health issues (not to mention, 80 years old). He fell off the ATV twice, fell down a hill once (all unarmed of course), and even "disarmed" a potentially expensive conversation with a conservation officer. He also managed to drink us under the table, and walk away with all the poker winnings.

Last year he told us it was his last year hunting, and he wasn't going to see the next season; he was right, he passed away last summer but left his legacy behind in his nephews, and grand children. He also left all his gear, guns, fishing equipment, and photographs of years gone by - to the camp.

We retired his deer stand this year and raised a large cedar cross (about 12 feet high) in it's place, and we plan on hanging his favorite orange hat on it for the season - forever on watch. He was also our dog man, and had been a dog man for 50 years; I only hope we can push as hard as he did this season without him.

Got rid of someone once for littering all over the place, leaving plastic bottles and other garbage everywhere and then fighting with group members when told repeatedly not to do this. Nothing worse than a slob hunter who thinks its their God given right to have other people clean up after him.

Hmm.....ever heard of evicting yourself from a hunt camp? That's what I did when I was 22 years old. After countless events of "shenanigans" and hunting with a couple of trigger happy idiots, I left my fathers group of friends. The last straw was when I was pushing the bush and I kicked out the biggest buck I had ever seen. It ran out of the gully and right to my dad's friend. In my head I was screaming "shoot!" "shoot!" "shoot????". The buck ran 20 yards past this individual. I headed towards him and found that he was sleeping under the tree with a bottle and his sandwich in his lap. That was the end of it!

Later my Dad started to get fed up and quit hunting with those guys. He's joined my group since then and never looked back.

We don't tolerate drunks. You drink during the day you don't hunt with us. We have a pretty good party the first night in camp which is the Saturday before the Monday morning opener so you have all day Sunday to clean yourself up while doing pre hunt chores. When the hunt starts we are in bed by 9:30 pm and up at 5:00 am every day. If you feel the need to get hammered you have 51 weeks a year to do it, I won't be doing it with you.

I too removed myself from a group when I was 21..years back.. I was always asked to come out since I could call well (ducks) and one day after some aggressive kill em all routines, a group of birds pitched on my side of the shooting lane and the fella beside me shot..blew the front of the brim of my hat off with the edge of the shot charge and my left eardrum for 2wks was torn and hearing shot for months. I walked out to my decoys..picked them all up and basically left him there after walking out to my truck with him upset I didn't want to stay. Ill never forget that BS...never went back.

We're the same.

A couple of beer, or a glass of wine or two in the evening, no problem. You get off your face, you're parked the next day.

Your one miserable SOB and nobody wants to hunt with you anyways .;) You would be the one fired permanently with that attitude . ;) If your not ready and clear headed in the morning you become camp beatch with us for the day . No sleeping it off . You do all the chores etc . Pretty well hunted with the same guys and some have been with me 40 years . Sometimes lads imbibe a wee bit too much after shooting a smasher etc . Not going to evict them just for being excited and letting loose .

If it became a habit, then we'd probably look at it.

The guys I hunt with are a pretty decent bunch, I doubt it would ever be an issue.

LMAO! Letting off some steam is one thing,but,getting piss drunk to the point where you can't hunt is quite another for us.

We've never had any issues,either. We don't have near the amount of carved-in-stone "rules" that most camps have and we have a reasonably "laid back" group,but,this is a rule we do have that's pretty much a "biggie". Clear heads hunt safely and we make sure everyone goes home in one piece.

I kind of like getting piss drunk at times and howling at the moon " trimmer " LOL;) You should try it sometimes . ;) Think maybe I'll have a few right now just so I don't get too anal and perfect with the camo paint job I'm putting on another duck boat . :scream:;) . I may get permanently fired by the damn ducks and my hunting buds and of course the dog if I do . ;)

I know exactly how you feel. This one Jack had his barrel pointing downward in front of me. He slightly turned and the gun went off kicking the dirt onto my legs. Another foot or two, I would of been carried back to the vehicle. When that happened, he didn't even know it was his gun. I unloaded my gun walked back to my dad's vehicle and didn't hunt the rest of the season. The scary part was that my dad and I had to remind this guy to watch his muzzle in the past. He didn't even have his safety on????
