Blaze orange vest question

So I've been searching like crazy for a pack that functions as a bird vest, but that will also allow me to carry gear with me on full day hunts. I've got my heart set on the Badlands Upland Bird vest, except for one thing. I called my local outdoors shop, and they told me that the vest isn't true "Blaze" orange.

My understanding of the law, is that you must have a total of 400 square inch's of hunter orange visible from all four sides above the waist, not including a mandatory hat. I am wondering if i where to wear a standard true blaze vest underneath the badlands pack, will that be meeting the extent of the law? Id be wearing a camo jacket, blaze vest and the pack. You will definitely see the orange vest in the front aswell as sides and maybe shoulders where the pack's straps go over top. Ive included a picture of the badlands pack.

I would like to clear this up before i spend $200 on a pack that will get me in trouble with a C-O.

And before you go spending the money, if it isn't blaze orange, it's not going to count.

Take a look at low light photography of blaze orange vs. anything else and you'll see why.

The most dangers to a hunter are in the early day, and end of day in low light conditions when moving in and out of hunting areas.

I sometimes carry a regular backpack, and when I do I use a hunter orange pack cover. It is a simple nylon "bag" that has an elastic drawstring that pulls tight. I got it from BPS a few years ago but I see it currently isn't available from them.

Well what are the rules in regard to hunting with a backpack? If you google the pack you'll see it's pretty darn orange, wouldn't you guys agree?

I could use a blaze orange rain cover on any standard back pack but I liked the idea of the bird vest with easy bird storage. Won't be the easiest to put birds in a backpack with the rest of your equipment I think.

Seems you already know the rules. when there is an open gun season for big game 400 visible inches must be worn. You may want to wear full orange jacket instead of a camo one the sleeves may give you the extra inches you need just measure it out.

Darwin award. Its not about being charged but about being safer.

So let me get this straight - a TOTAL of 400 CI must be visible, and it must be able to be seen from the front sides and back? Cause if that's the case, then I'll have the front and sides of the blaze vest to make up 400, them whatever will peak out from the sides on my back from under the pack. Also keeping in mind the pack will be blaze orange, just a darker orange then typical

I'm curious about blaze orange requirements when wearing a backpack. Obviously, a backpack will cover up a significant portion of the blaze orange vest. Would you consider this as having less than the required 400 sq inches of visible material? Are there other variables to consider? I suppose a 250 lb man would have more visible blaze than someone who is 150 lb. It came up in a discussion recently and would like to have some clarification.

As long as you are wearing the required 400 square inches there should be no problem. You should remember however that wearing a backpack that covers a large portion of your hunter orange makes you less visible to other hunters. You may choose to purchase an orange backpack or cover your existing backpack with a piece of orange fabric or an orange vest.

Yep. I do the back pack thing over my blaze orange jacket,have met and talked with lots of CO's and have never had an issue. There's still lots of visibilty.

I can still put a few birds in my vest's game pouch and it isn't perfect but when I'm using the backpack it's my option.

According to the above CO's interpretation, yes. There's a chance you could run into one that will see things differently but it's not worth stressing over. You're more than covered from a safety/visibility standpoint too as your pack would be "nearly blaze".

Like trimmer said, I've run into CO's in the field while wearing a green pack over my vest with no issues.

It's a safety issue and only a fool would not wear blaze orange...don't come whining on here when you do get charged and one day you will!

It's a TOTAL of 400 sq inches, that has some showing on all four side. Can't all be on one side, front or back but must be visible from all sides to some degree. In open hardwood you can locate another hunter 1/2 mile away but in a green swamp things get up close and personal....
Even my spare cheap strap-on vest has over 400 inches on EACH half. If you have a jacket with oranges leaves then you can have over 1000sq inches of orange .....:rolleyes: Especially if you are normal sized.

Unless you are hunting in a zone that has an open firearms season for big game then you can't be charged for hunting small game without blaze orange. If there is an open season you need 400 sq inches of coverage. If you were charged you would win in court, that is the law in Ontario. Having said that only an idiot would hunt without sufficient blaze orange to guarantee his/her safety regardless of the laws.

The blaze orange requirement only applies to LICENSED Black Bear hunters when hunting Bears specifically,outside any open Deer,Elk or Moose gun seasons. That's the way the law is written. Whether or not it makes a lot of sense is open for lengthy debate,without doubt. Common sense would dictate,though,that if hunting in an area where there's active bear hunting,it's best to not look or sound like a bear. Put the blaze on. Many WMU's in southern Ontario have very few,if any,populations of Bears,therefore,it would be reasonable to assume there wouldn't be any bear hunting going on,either,negating a need for small game hunters to wear blaze orange except for the open gun season for Deer including the special black powder week. I'll likely get some heat for this,but,I wish when they wrote the regulation,they included blaze orange camo and permitted it to be worn while hunting big game as the only requirement. It sure would have eliminated a lot confusion and likely would have lead to a much higher rate of compliance.

One factor I'm sure, would be hunter numbers. You will have a much better chance of crossing paths with other hunters in Ontario, than you would in BC or Alberta for instance. My buddy hunts BC, where hunter orange is not required. He says he can hunt for a week and not encounter anyone else.

Really? The only way to check would be to survey hunting accidents (when blaze was used and when it wasn't for big game) in this province,only,because this one requires blaze orange for hunting big game where most others do not. We would need to compare apples to apples.

I go waaaay back before hunter orange became law in Ontario and I can tell you there were many hunting accidents that were accredited to hunters mistaken for game. Manitoulin island alone would have fatalities every year.
Compulsory hunter orange and HST have cut those accidents down to almost zero.

The number of hunting accidents has declined significantly since hunter ed & blaze orange came in.

I recall a conversation I had in Calgary a few years back. My Albertan client boasted that in Alberta they don't need stupid nanny state BS like blaze orange. Well, they do now ... he hadn't hunted in years. Why not, I asked....

"I quit after this one year I had some guy shooting at me and the only way I could get him to stp was firing a shot back."

Mot sure where you live but in Ontario when hunting for deer, moose you must where blaze orange it's the law, For bear you must where it ton where your hunting from. Second if hunting small game with other people well my opinion is your just asking for an accident. I always where my blaze orange when hunting small game. I don't really want to get a bullet or shot in me. Just my preference mind ya.

Not if your in a bows only area for deer or moose and no gun season open for either one at the same time in the same area.

As someone else mentioned, choose a blaze orange jacket (just checked the Cabela's site and they have several different options with long sleeves in blaze orange from hoodies to micro-fibre jackets). The jacket front, along with the sleeves plus a blaze hat should give you plenty of visibility with an orange pack on your back.

I know you said you checked with your local retailer but why not shoot an email off to Badlands and ask if their material color meets the standards for hunter orange? Most manufactures can provide that info.

On a side note the regs may say hunter orange is only mandatory under gun seasons for deer, moose, elk and black bear when traveling to and from stand, but you decide out side of those seasons. Do you consider you are safe where you hunt? Are you on fenced private land, and do you trust your companions with your life? Are there fall turkey hunters in camo in your area? So many questions??? Isn't it simpler to wear orange than not.

I hunted for years before hunter orange with out incident, know your target and pay attention to your environment. We had a camp rule even before hunter orange: that anyone at camp wore bright red vests (i actually wore orange camo back then) or jackets period so transition to orange was easy and made sense.

If your heart is set on that pack...its amazing what you can do with velcro and fabric to improve your visibility.

I use my camo backpack or my blaze orange backpack, it does not matter legally.

I do like to use a coat over a vest though, so my blaze orange arms make up for the little bit of orange covered up by the backpack and I have never felt unsafe.

And there are literally 100s of people who drove home drunk last weekend across this country as well.

Getting away with something, and compliance with the law are two different things entirely.

As an avid hunter, unless I'm hunting waterfowl or turkey, I always make sure I've got blaze orange on. I also get my son in the habit as well. The grouse don't care, that's for sure. If it increases my visibility in an area where other hunters are active, then why wouldn't you?

We didn't have a problem shooting other hunters prior to the blaze orange Welsh, I'd be willing to bet those hunting accident numbers have increased since the introduction of orange.
I'm thinking the late 80's early 90's it was introduced. The stats at that time didn't show that orange reduced accidents, actually the opposite. However, with today new camo's, that may have changed.
One other thing, I think it made the CO's job a heck of a lot easier with blaze orange. Just throwing that out there.

Mandatory hunter's ed and blaze orange were introduced at different times in different states and provinces. In many places, mandatory hunter's ed is quite recent. There has been an ongoing decline in hunting accidents. Pretty difficult to disentangle which of the two is responsible.

All joking aside, why would you "not" want to wear blaze orange while hunting? It could save your life, isn't that enough? Why do you feel the need to hide from a CO?

Because CO's are nosey buggers and like to talk and talk and talk interfering with my hunt or fishing . And then they tell others where I'm at, or successful, or I later see them there hunting or fishing too .;)

It all depends where you hunt and park your vehicle.

Hunting on public land or parking your vehicle on the side of the road, you'll see more CO's. Hunting on a private farm where your vehicle is parked behind the barn or out of sight from the road, a lot less likely to encounter a CO.

There should nothing wrong with encountering CO's.............they are just doing there job. The majority of them are nice guys and willing to report on the success of other hunters they check.

I ran into a lot of them over the years and the same one's.

In regards to wearing blaze orange, I wear it during the big game and small game seasons and I consider my success the same or better as in the 80's early 90's. Besides law, it's the responsible thing to do. I've talked to hunters that have been pelted with #6 and 7 1/2 shot................not fun at all!

So why take the risk?

I was referring to Ontario introducing orange in the late 80's early 90's.
It didn't come in with much fan fair. For the reason I already mentioned.

Hunters Orange has been around in Ontario, NB, NS and Quebec since early 1970's. Hunters ed only became mandatorey in these provinces in the 1990's.

yes the accident rate did start dropping when hunters orange was introduced.

FinsFurFeathers . Relax , some of my comments are dry and tongue in cheek . I've dealt closely with CO's over the years and not because I break laws . I don't mind seeing them at all at anytime and I use the time wisely to interrogate them at every opportunity .:thumbup: Sometimes find out nice little tidbits of info where a hotbite is going on etc . :thumbup:

There is, however, for the States. To look at the effects of hunter orange we must first discard hunting accidents that are not firearm-related (fall from tree stand, etc.), those related to simple negligence (unsafe handling, negligent discharge, etc.), and those related to mechanical causes (obstruction in barrel, etc.) and focus on those that hunter orange is supposed to help prevent: person mistaken for game or not seen, person shot by hunter swinging on game.

1. in states where hunter orange regulations are introduced, there is normally a substantial reduction in the overall rate of hunting accidents and specifically on those accidents that hunter orange ought to help prevent.
2. in states where hunter orange is voluntary, the great majority of victims in shootings where someone is not seen, mistaken for game, etc. are not wearing hunter orange.

It's fairly obvious that hunter orange reduces accidents.

I took mandatory course in the 80's. Didn't have to wear orange for deer then either. You might have them backwards gw.

I don't know if this has been covered yet, so might be too late to the game ( haven't gone through the 5 pages yet), but I just bought two blaze orange hunters vests, one for me, one for my Pack, Which I wrapped it around it. I think I got the idea from a similar thread on here.
When waterfowling I just unclip (Really I think I used a safety pin) and then there's no orange.

Again, today's concealment (camo) may have more to do with that then it did way back when.
However, if it's that obvious. Why isn't it across all of North America and why are blaze orange hunters still being shot in Ontario?

I wear my blaze all the time, even at lunch when it's hot and I'm in a t-shirt, not because I feel safer, because it's a requirement.
I rather hunt with 20 well educated hunters without orange then 20 trigger happy hunters all decked out.

And the uneducated guy you can't see and he can't see you and is about to shoot in your direction your fine with that. Even if the bullet hits you in the head?

Has anybody on her been accidentally shot at because the other fella didn't see you?? I have and to be honest it's not fun.

After making blaze orange mandatory, Utah saw a 47% decrease in overall hunting accidents and a 38% decline in fatalities; Washington, a 37% decline in accidents and a 47% decline in fatalities; North Dakota, an 82% decline in fatalities but only a 4% decline in overall incidents. The aggregate result in states that require blaze orange and have reported their results is a 22% decline in overall incidents, and a 40% decline in fatalities.

After introducing mandatory blaze orange in York Co., Maine, the county's contribution to hunting accidents where the victim was mistaken for game or not seen by the shooter declined from 41% to 23%.

It isn't across all of North America because making laws is a political activity. Some people don't want blaze orange to be law, and so it is a political fight.

As to why people are still shot in Ontario, let's keep those goal posts right where they are, shall we? I didn't say blaze orange would magically prevent all accidents. I said it reduced them. And the fact is, it does.

You might recall, that until Mossy Oak...Hunters didn't need Blaze Orange...Hunters wore Red Plaid...:)

I like the idea I can see trespassers better when they wear Blaze Orange :)

Yeah, I have, by a trespasser while turkey hunting. No it's not fun.
This guy took the extra turkey course and did exactly what he was told not to do. He saw birds from the road and walked up the hill and shot at them while they were walking towards me on the ridge.

It isn't across all of North America because making laws is a political activity. Some people don't want blaze orange to be law, and so it is a political fight.

As to why people are still shot in Ontario, let's keep those goal posts right where they are, shall we? I didn't say blaze orange would magically prevent all accidents. I said it reduced them. And the fact is, it does.

In the old days, prior to the mandatory 'orange' requirements , how many 'homicides' were blamed on accidental shooting because they mistook the 'victim' for a bear, deer etc....

Once the new rules were enacted, that defence became more improbable, so death rates dropped, at least the ones attributed to 'accidental' shootings.

I often wore this jacket and still do .:thumbup: Yes Mike blaze orange trespassers are now at a disadvantage since they are so easily seen but since I usually catch trespassers while hunting the dang government made it an even playing field for trespassers . They see us a coming . LOL

The only danger I can see with being required to wear blaze orange is that hunters have now educated themselves and become accustomed to looking for the blaze. If they don't see it,they think it's OK to take the shot rather than take the extra couple of seconds to really LOOK,FIRST.

Blaze orange hunters are getting shot in Ontario because of outright carelessness by the people who pull the trigger and I think you'll find that those trigger pullers (because I won't call them hunters) are being charged for hunting carelessly and losing their hunting privileges as a result.

Unfortunately you may be right. Those that don't take the extra seconds should not be hunting in the first place. Is harvesting game really more important than safety? I hope not!!

is there a way that we can get blaze orange on the deer? that way we can see the deer further away, and shoot them easier...
or maybe yellow.. or something.. neon green? with flashing lights.. and a target on the boiler room?

That was basically the debate back when orange was being brought in, if I can recall correctly.
I was sure I read an ood issue back around that time that showed stats reflecting ontario having much better gun accident hunting record than those provinces or states that had the requirement.

A number of years ago and animal rights group did exactally this, I think it was collars (someone feel free to correct me). A local hunting store offered a reward for each returned collar, if memory serves me they were all returned:)

You are correct. I remember this as well. If memory serves the law regarding hunters orange was changed to blue for one season. All the orange was returned.
