I was wondering what you guys use to waterproof your boots. I got a decent pair but I worry that water will get in if I got to cross some water spots. the boots are the canvas,lace up.thinsulated type. i read that silicone spray will work but looking for actual results. thanks
I use Nikwax for my leather boots. They have products for fabric, canvas and other materials. Bought it at Sail Burlington.

I am not sure what to use on canvas boots. Perhaps the cans of silicone spray will have the different types of material it can be used on? I use a few coats of mink oil on my leather boots.
I have used mink oil on every thing for years, from nylon to leather. on the hunting boots with the fabric it ends up similar to a light paste, doesn't work in like the leather I make sure I get to were all the stitching is so the threads don't dry out.. I do the laces and tongue as well as my leather belt and sling.but I don't care just keeps my feet dry. And the rest from cracking and rotting.
For leather - neatsfoot oil to prevent cracking, then mink oil for waterproofing.
I use sno-seal its awesome on leather not sure if it will work on nylon
I buy the silicone based spray. Has a bright orange top. I use it on all my outdoor boots.
I have leather boots and I like Dubin. I make sure to rub it into the welts and apply as required.
Mink oil or dubbin, stay away from the sprays. Start with a thick bead where the upper meets the sole, and then work it into the upper from there.
Just out of curiousity, and not to hijack the thread but along the same lines and without creating another thread - I bought a brand new one piece insulated hunting suit, all cotton exterior (almost feels like a thin canvas), and poly interior. It is NOT waterproof however, any suggestions on getting it water resistant so if it starts to rain on the stand I don't get completely soaked?
Second this for leather. Any fabric I use a spray from Sail. Can't recall the name but it has Deutsch writing on it.

Sweat by this stuff for everything, from outerwear to boots to the carpets in my truck. I even spray down my set of goalie pads and gloves with it every year. I've taken a fleece jacket and made it waterproof with 303. Check out youtube for some videos on it. The stuff last a longtime too, it doesn't wear off like most other stuff out there. Eshine.ca and Royal carry it.

Nik Wax, unless you have gaping holes, this stuff works and keeps the leather supple. Once in the fall and once more during winter keeps the real leather boots dry inside.

Mink oil. I put that &:)/&/ on everything. Even my leather seat for my cruiser. I rub it on with my gloves on.

I used mink oil on the leather... but unsure what to do with the fabric.. maybe try a spray sealer? After mink oil?

I use toilet bowl wax. Some in the seams and on the leather. Heat the boots up in the sun or with heater and it applies nice. You can also heat up the wax. Cheap and really effective.
I don't know how this would work for fabric boots that are supposed to breath.
There is a product from Rustoleum called Never Wet but it is expensive. I just use the silicone spray and it helps to keep the boots dry Even mud doesn't stick to them.
This stuff does work. You can actually waterproof a cotton t-shirt. It does not however last long on boots or anything that flexes. It also leaves a chalky residue on everything.Quote:

GoreTex, Leather and various so-called breathable materials do nothing useful to "breath AWAY moisture". Nor do they "cool your feet" in the summer. That might be something they can measure in a lab. But in real life it makes no difference.
If you are in water a lot, especially cold/winter season-- get a set of Baffins in rubber that are rated to -100 or more.
For the rest of the year, I do wear leather boots/rubber soled and always treat a new set with silicone spray. It probably helps for the first year and then I always forget to reapply. I'm guessing I could make boots last longer if I sprayed silicone yearly.
