What to pack for first time Moose hunt?

I am just curious...this will be my first year moose hunting and although I am only 3.5 hours from home and not waaay up north I am just curious if any of the experts/veterans have tips on what to pack that I shouldnt leave at home. Sounds like we will be hunting from the ground and only calf tags this yr. We have a good camp set up that sleeps 20, so wont be roughing it out in the woods in tents.

Any gear items or tips and tricks I should know about would be greatly appreciated. Getting pretty pumped but have no idea what to expect.

All kidding aside buddy, pretty much anything you'd pack for a deer hunt, you'd use for a moose as well. Aside from that little tether pull the deer cord, not going to do much good on a moose :)

Prosciutto, Brie, pickled artichokes, olives, nice crusty Italian bread. Thats just to gnosh on when you are done for the day before dinner. A Heineken washes this down nicely.

hahahaha sounds delightful....I think we will be eating like kings thats for sure, with a dedicated cook for the week by sounds of it bellys are always full.......I will leave the heineken to those a little more fancy then me perhaps and I will lug in my budlights.

Anything gear or clothing wise I shouldnt forget at home.....sounds like its fairly thick and hunting mostly old logging trails (may take the ground blind for crappy weather)

That's allot of boats, and doesn't seem economical :)

A Come-a-Long or manual winch, sharp knives, axe or hatchet, some clean rags and rope. Don't over pack with a bunch of Cabela's hunting gadgets! The best hunting tool other than your firearm is binoculars.

Quality rubber boots. A good rain suit. A GPS. A good knife. A bottle of wind checking powder ( its actually unscented talcum powder sold in the archery section usually). I like to use a small daypack to haul my gear when out for the entire day. If you have electricity in camp then a Peets boot dryer is great. Never forget azzwipe. The day you forget it you will need it. We also all carry rubber gloves for gutting and butchering.

as it is unchartered terrioty for me .....I am hoping the basic bushnell back track will serve me well in the case I get turned around. I dont have a big fancy gps of any sort........so i will be relying on the back track, compass, and marking tape which hopfully I dont need any of them unless tracking a downed moose.

Don't forget the cheesecloth socks.

A small, foldable camp chair if you're not a 'stander'. I knew guys that could stand (or lean on a tree) for most of their watch, hours on end, not me. I used to drag a collapsible lawn chair everywhere that fit neatly tied to the bottom of my pack - and it was great. Being on a watch for hours on end, you want to ensure you're going to be comfortable. Not to mention warm.

Oh, and those throw away plastic gloves for gut'n. If you want to know why. just ask. lol.

A very sharp knife, and a sharpener. Moose (even a calf) are a lot tougher than a deer.

Lots of rope, if you have to wade/pull one across a swamp you will appreciate this. Means of hanging/come along.lots of flag tape, if someone wings one and you start tracking too soon and end up 6 hours from home all on foot you will need lots of tape. Good luck!

A book, when i'm calf hunting it means long sits on stand with not a whole lot of action.

This seems to be the general consensus....just curious why are the calves so hard to find...you would think if there is a cow around they wouldnt be too far away. Its all a learning curve for me, never done moose hunting but I am sure pumped to learn and take it all in.

In our area, cows have pretty much lost their calves to predation already. If they do have a calf, they will try to keep the calf hidden in the timber. You may catch them on the move from their feeding areas to bedding areas early in the morning. Don't forget a Thermacell or head net at the very least. As said previously, good rain gear, good boots for walking and swamping. Early season in the north can go from warm to cold and snow in the matter of hours. Never leave camp without a compass or two.

I've had a few years to collect these invaluable items and due to the fact that we sit for the entire day out on the stand, it's saved my .

1) Never underestimate the value of technical clothing (Base Layers)
- Under Armour Skin Tight Base Layer
- Under Armour Base Layer 3.0 or 4.0 (depending on how cold it is)
- Breathable, wicking sweaters
and on the cold days, I have a North Face down jacket that can collapse into a small ball, I love it and am so happy that I have it. You put that on and do a couple push-ups or squats and to generate body heat and the down jacket does the rest. It's simply a must in cold weather combined with very little movement.

2) Non-scented pre-packaged wet wipes
- For your hands (if you want to eat lunch with some what of clean hands)
- For your .
It comes in small package, easily packable and if it rains, it doesn't get soaked like TP would sitting in your bag.
3) Sunflower seeds (or chewing tobacco)

4) Some guys may complain about this but I have a small MSR Pocket Rocket Stove (http://www.basspro.com/MSR-PocketRoc...product/45441/), I can run it on the lowest setting and it makes no sound and will slowly warm up a soup or chilli for lunch. Or, a fresh cup of tea before you get ready for the evening push.

Lastly, nothing beats a cellphone that has 3G or 4G access... If you have it than a Mophie battery power station will become your best friend. I have one that can charge my phone 3 times.

Rain gear,TP,foldable ammo case(quiet) small hatchet and shovel,knife,compass (good one),2 Bic lighters,ziploc bag of dryer lint (it can burn down your house,so,it's awesome firestarter) folding camp chair,9x12 tarp with rope (umbrella over your watch),waterproof flashlight with extra batteries. All of this can go into a single hunting backpack....no fuss,no muss.

Crazy glue has come in handy, if you need to fix something minor or you slice yourself open.

I'd take with me some good maps, aerial scouting and plan experience of where I scouted and found sign before the hunt. If you remember that and a gun that shoots straight.

You our might be able to get by without under armour base layers n goretex outer layers if you haven't watched too many hunting shows.

Ps if you can't do the first thing then listen too the most experienced guy in your group.

Sorry to interject, I have a 30-32 , I am going Moose hunting for the first time this year. I can get the loan of a .308 for the week. The question is, should I grab the .308 because the 30-32 may not be enough? Should -may- could, I stick with Grandpas gun? Why? I think I will bring both with me, but, what others say on here may help me make up my mind as to what I take into the woods.

Do you mean a .32 Winchester special? If you're most comfortable with it, use it. You just won't be able to reach out as far as with a .308. Keep your shots under 150 yards. Lots of moose have fallen to "Grandpa's gun" over the years.

OK gents, for those of us who can't stand for long times on our watches, and need something to sit on. Here is an awesome lil unit you can make. or have your significant other make, or convince your sons or daughters to make for you. We have used this camping, and I have used it on my watches, simple and easy to set up. the only neg to this is, it's way to comfortable and could possibly induce a closed eye session on your watch.

If you do it right,everything should fit in a standard back pack.

That is what I assumed, but does wearing a standard size backpack ( less than 20 litres), violate the hunter orange requirements?

As long as you're wearing a vest or jacket and cap that meets all blaze orange requirements,wearing your back pack over it doesn't technically violate those requirements under the Act. There's no specific offense listed,however,it may be prudent to use a pack with a pull-out blaze orange insert or make a cover just for safety's sake. I've been checked many times while wearing a day pack and there's never been an issue simply because the pack can quickly be removed leaving a hunter in instant full compliance.

Okay I like a warm pair for everyday s pair of rubbers for wet areas and a pair of somthing for around camp. He is driving to camp

From many years of experience.....best to make that 3 or 4 rolls

Boot dryer is a must for me! Nice to slide your feet into warm dry boots on a cold morning. Preparation H, just in case..... Above all the gear don't forget that this is a great vacation and harvesting a moose is just bonus... Lastly don't forget to bring a big pile of patience!! Will be lots of hours staring at the beautiful scenery

I know some folks are not happy with Under Armour but they have the best base layer clothing bar none. I use 4.0 and 3.0 for ice fishing and late season hunting and it is worth every (expensive) penny IMO. You can actually feel the sweat being absorbed from your body, GPS and extra batteries are another winner
