The Best Laid Plans....ruined opener.

The fella that bought the farm next to me (3 yrs ago) is an avid bow hunter....he has done all the prep work and has what on first glance, is the perfect hunt scenario/setup.

He rents his fields to a local guy who alternates Corn/Soya and it attracts deer almost year round. He erected a great stand in a nice choke point in the far corner to ambush deer as they travel to and from his field. This field is a good 1/2 mile from the road and in a fairly secluded area. A Bow Hunters paradise, heaven.

EXCEPT....

My farm happens to also be 1/2 mile back in from the road and our shared property line is only 300 yds away from his stand and it's fairly open (minimal trees). His soya beans butt against my hay fields. So I can see his stand clearly as I walk by ....which means he can see me..clearly..worse.. I walk the property line 4-5 times a day , every day for the past 17 yrs.

And I'm not alone...I'm with my two very large free ranging dogs. As a round the corner I often see the White Flags go up as the deer take flight and leave the field for the bush. If the dogs see the deer, the chase is on till I can call them off.

Being a fellow hunter I feel sorry for the guy. I waved sheepishly this morning as I went by :ashamed:

Two of the daily walks happen to be at sunrise and sunset, everyday. So it's the worse time for me to be interrupting his hunt even if it only takes 4-5 minutes for me to walk by that area. To add to the insult, if I'm out hunting myself then my wife takes the dogs...so there is no down days...it happens 365 days a year.

I have tried to delay the walks by an hour at either side to help during weekends, but it probably doesn't do much.

I know I ruined two of his Turkey hunts this past spring and scared off the Tom's before I realized that some of the Gobble calls were his, but to late.

Not much I can do I guess, he's never mentioned it when we talk so it's not a burning issue. He has a lot more acreage (but all bush) farther to the back, which is where I use to hunt on the same property under the old ownership. I guess he'll have to relocate and change tactics if he wants any success.

But still....

I think I'd be a lot more accommodating to a neighbor...find out when he's going to be out there and take a different path for your walk? Sure it's your land and you have a right to be there whenever you want - but what about the golden rule "do unto others..."

...and that he hasn't mentioned it doesn't mean its not bothering him.

I have two dogs running at large (no one is ever with them) on my property. They eat my bear bait, piss on my deer bait, etc. And I haven't mentioned it to the owners because a) I don't want to piss people off and b) in case something happens to the dogs....they run a lot of deer hunters properties, I'd guess.

Was feeling the same way as Werner, given that you are an avid outdoorsmen yourself, and from your post, it's obvious you do feel somewhat bad about it.

Maybe a chat and coffee with him, just mention, I noticed I may be messing up your hunt with my dog walks, and work out a compromise, maybe walk the dogs on his property, etc.

If the roles were reversed, I'm sure you'd be level headed, and understand, it is what it is, and he's walking his dogs on his land, but at the same time, I'm sure you'd be a little frustrated and wish there was something else that could be done.

If you stop taking those walks it will screw up the deer, you do it every day.

I would not be surprised if you go by with your dogs and the deer come back right away.

I hunted a farm where the landowner had a daily routine as well. There were times when he spooked deer but they didn't go very far, as they were used to his routine as well. Most times, the deer just stood at the bush edge and watched him. If you have been walking the same route daily, the deer around there know you aren't a threat. However, I think I would try to schedule my walks so your neighbour isn't effected. Surely he doesn't hunt every day ! Just a thought !

Hunting season is now until Dec..3 months...if it was only a week sure I'd try to accommodate the timings..I'm also sure playing phone tag to confirm hunt schedules is a poor idea.

My hay fields are cut, so even from the far side of my property to his, is wide open so no, I really can't alter my walks, the dogs run the fields freely all day anyway.

Being 'neighbourly' doesn't mean I have to alter my lifestyle to accommodate his.

Your (both) right..the deer aren't bothered much by even the dogs giving them chase. The lure of the 'soya' is to great, they still come there day after day :)

In reality I'm probably doing him a favour, they are so used to the 'human' scent now he's not seen as a risk to them :)

a case of beer, an apology and an offer to work together might go a long way with a neighbour. i'm sure he's a reasonable guy.

I would tend to agree, deer get "use" to certain sights, and sounds. In the manner of passing cards along a road by fields they use, to gunshots going off all season.

Not so sure a deer would ever become accustomed to being chased by a dog, I could be wrong, but I think their natural instinct, to run fast and far, kicks in, every time :)

Will they come back to that spot? of course, they haven't been caught / hurt from it, but if you're trying to hunt and the deer that was coming in, now has the flags up and is leaving at break neck speed, they aren't coming right back as they watch the dogs leave.

My question is why walk the property line closet to him? Would a back and forth walk on the otherside of your property work for you? Would be a compromise that might be of least impact to him. I'm sure you really don't want to interfere with a legal hunt.

My dad has 96 acres, his dogs run around the bush all the time, he tries to keep them away from the deer but it does not always happen.

The number of times I have heard them barking like mad at night (he keeps them out at night into the fall to build up a good winter coat) in the kennel only to go out and see a deer taunting them while they are in the cage makes me think that they get used to the dogs anyway.

Change is what messes up hunts, I hate when I hear people say "stop doing that because it is hunting season". If you do the same thing for 9 months then stop doing that for the 3 months of bow hunting you will miss out on all of those patterned deer. Now taking 3000 people and moving into a quiet area of eastern Ontario and running every deer in the county with dogs, that will alter their patterns.

There is a good old saying in the Infantry…”time is seldom wasted on a good recce”….the only person who has done anything wrong in this scenario is the Hunter who failed to do take in his surroundings before he set up his stand.

And it is probably why he hasn’t said anything because he knows he made 'the' mistake.

It’s extremely arrogant to think that a land owner living next to where you hunt should ‘accommodate’ you in anyway whatsoever. To suggest that he should take your call and then alter his days activities so you can hunt is selfish to say the least. I would have presumed to tell the original owner/farmer not to work his land that morning because I wanted to hunt over there.

I feel sorry for the guy, being a fellow hunter, but realistically, legally and morally that is about all I have to be.

I did out of a courtesy, as a fellow hunter, alter my dog walk timings on the weekends during the Turkey Season, so he has first light undisturbed. But with a 3 month bow season ahead and him being a shift worker it’s going to be impossible for us to ensure what I do on my property will not affect his hunting.

Some of the comments posted here are sure telling about the attitudes of the hunters on here. No wonder there are so many problems when dealing with the public and other hunters.

edit add: Oh and some wanted to know the morale of the story...."make sure of your surroundings before you set up a stand"

Mike, I think it must just be the wording of the original post because it some how comes off like you're a bit of a a dick, however based on most of your posts I don't think you are. Comes across like you're punishing this guy for setting up where he did....that's just how I read it...

Anyways, I don't have any comment other then the guy is likely not happy about you're routine even though he doesn't say anything. I had permission on a property for turkey and yotes. The lady would walk her 150+ # dog every morning around 8:00 whether I was there or not. It would be the end of the hunt for me. It really sucks but it's her property so how could I possibly say something? Your neighbour probably feels the same way....

I think it just kind of sounds like you were boasting about ruining his hunt and then suggesting that he was stupid for not considering your routine. For that reason I can understand some of the comments, sometimes written text doesn't always capture the intended tone though.

Just a thought. I know your dogs probably wouldn't like it but maybe leash your dogs for that section of the walk so they don't chase the deer. I know you don't have to, but the deer might not go as far.

"don't have too" - sure he doesn't have to but it is illegal to allow dogs to run deer OOS even on your own property.

My brother has permission on a farm, and the neighbour does not allow hunters and patrols the property during deer season. His patrols were at dawn and dusk by atv and were really messing things up for him. He spoke to the neighbour about timing and the the guy was really nice and apologetic about it, the hunting was great for years. Now a guy has been allowed to hunt there and he deliberately parks his atv on the property line as close to my brothers stand as he can get and put his stand on the fence about a 100yds away, it appears he's going out of his way to obstruct my brothers hunt. I think it's selfish and ignorant considering my brother is on a 20acre piece and the neighbouring property is 700 acres. My brother is super pissed but doesn't want to tell anyone what to do on their own place. The optics are really bad on this. The guy could literally go a hundred other places on this place and be in complete peace with no competition. We used to be able to hunt there til ownership changed, lots of places better than where this guy setup. My brother is on a fringe travel corridor, fields on one side, small strip of bush up to fence line, then the 700 of bush, lake, trails, fields etc to the next sideline.
The OP might not be intending on screwing up his neighbours hunt, but there definitely are those out there who do.

Some of you guys sound like you wanna kill each other, the OP doesnt have to do anything to accommodate his neighbor if he doesnt want to its not like he walks out randomly and ruins his neighbors hunt purposely its the same time everyday if his neighbor failed to realise this its his fault. If he wants to be really nice i say just get in contact with the neighbor and talk to him and maybe give him one day were he walks on the other side of the field and then the next day back to routine. Come on guys we fight enough with the anti's lets at least be peacefully with each other.

I agree with you a landowner can do what he legally wants to do on his property. If you call yourself a neighbor and a sportsman than there are other responsibilities you have. Your last paragraph seems to have a feel of sour grapes there. No longer have access to a preferred hunting location. You acknowledge that he has set up in the perfect spot. Don't know why you have to walk the property line when you could concentrate your walks to the other side of the property. How I read it your actions are neither neighborly nor sportsman like.

It gets touchy when it comes to thoughts of a ruined hunt, we've all been there. Your original post however to me sounded like you were just looking for some support here. You clearly feel for the guy.

It would have been nice however to read some supporting comments from our nice fellow peeps on the board. It's not your fault none of the nice peeps were in on this one. ;)

You can enjoy your own property in your own way without looking like a jurk. Your neighbor either doesn't mind or didn't think this one through. The fact that you even care shows your colours bud.

for the record..not that it has anything to do with this, I still have permission to hunt the property, but being a good sportsman I have declined, but I still brush hog the trails back behind his place while I'm out back doing mine because the offer is on the table.

We are on very friendly terms and both have a passion for hunting. He would never ask me to stop doing something because it was disturbing his hunt....as neither would I. That is not how we were mentored as hunters. That's why it bothered me when I ruined his hunt...that was the point of the post.

It doesn't matter if I was walking my dogs or brush hogging the trails, or sickle mowering the hay, or running my sheep or hauling wood from the back wood lots....that trail is used daily. It goes around the hay field and is in clear view of his hunting area where he has set up. It's been that way for the 17 yrs I have owned the property.

My point was it's unfortunate that he has set up a nice hunt stand close to an active area and it will limit his success and I feel bad when I ruin his hunt. Fortunately he has options and I'm sure he will change where he hunts if he finds the activity over here to bothersome.....but I know he wouldn't blame me, he knows how it works.

Calling me out as a bad neighbour and poor sportsman is way wrong.

I wouldn't have a problem with you walking your property at all. Why would I? It's your place. You're not letting the dog get on his side are you?
Those deer have already altered themselves to your routine.
He'll get his deer, they obviously can't resist what's in his fields.
Good hunters learn to change tactics quickly and I wouldn't have a problem with this scenario. The deer most likely run out of that field into the same spot every time and that would be my new go to spot.

And for the record, I've seen hunters so many times go out of their way to come all the way across a field, over to me to just ask if I have permission to be there.
I've never done it and never will.

Before the lunch mob forms, Mike has walked his dogs on this fence line for some time, when the new neighbour moved in he set up in an area where Mikes existing actions can screw up his hunt. This is the way the cookie crumbles.

When I bought my farm I built two large enclosed stands in areas I knew no one could screw up my hunt or I screw up someone elses. On the only side of my property I don't have sole hunting permission ( I can hunt it but so can someone else ) I placed a couple portable stands so that if there are problems I can relocate them.

More importantly though I'm going to go on a hunch and say it's likely the other side of Mikes farm you guys feel he should walk his dogs on is likely the best part of his farm for Mike to hunt ? If that's the case why can't Mike walk his dogs on his property so that he doesn't disturb his hunting spot ? You know the one he likely has hunted for years and paid taxes on ?

I know this is hard for some to understand, particularly guys that don't own a farm. Mike has done nothing wrong, he hasn't changed one thing that he's been doing on his farm nor should he have too, as a land owner I get it.

Give those dogs a treat for me Mike. Mine roam my farm freely, I love when I get trail can pics of my dogs or my neighbouring farmer and an hour later a good buck is standing under one of my stands.

I've thought of this more from a strategic point of view, politics aside, if the OP is walking his dogs on his property and the deer are out in the field already, doesn't that mean the deer have already made it past the impending ambush? Also if the deer are feeding on the soy that is there, wouldn't it be more alarming for the deer for someone to walk through (without the dogs) in the feeding field during pre dawn as opposed to the daylight hours they are more accustomed to? We are talking about archery here right, it's not like the neighbour is taking 100yd plus shots. I know field edges are a real popular spot to setup, but I personally have done better setting up back in a bit further, the bigger bucks seem to come in the worst light conditions. Based on what I know, I would avoid morning hunts, move the stand further back from the field and get in as early in the afternoon as possible.
It's opening day, plenty of time to figure it out.

MikePal, I won't feel bad at all about ruining his hunts. You've been there for 17 years, he's the new guy on the block. He needs to adapt to his surroundings and tailor his hunt to the conditions present. Your on your land and he is on his land.

I have a farm with sole permission that I have hunted for 10+ years. There is a new owner to the south of me that has put up a tree stand right at the southern limit of the farm I have permission on. The deer and turkeys come out of this guys property and cross the fence to where I am allowed to hunt. This guy sets up every morning I'm there between my calls and the roosting birds. Thankfully I can out smart the guy and usually end up call the birds in a couple hundred feet away after a relocation. The sound of his ATV directly to his setup may tip him off slightly! haha

Just saying ... you have to adapt to the surrounding conditions. It's so hard to get permission these days we don't need more confrontation out there.

Having your hunt ruined by unforeseen circumstances SUCKS! Plain and simple. Time, money, and enjoyment gone just like that. Especially if someone allows their dogs to chase around deer out of season, that's what I would definitely consider unsportsmanlike about the situation.


On the other hand, I think your neighbor should be well aware of your routine by now and his turkey hunts are a good example. I would think he should have changed his hunting strategy accordingly by now if it was affecting the quality of his hunts that much. A second tree stand where the deer run to when they're spooked by your presence would be a good idea. Or in the very least he could approach you about the issue himself and try to work out an agreement for one day having your schedule changed.


Either way I can see that you do feel bad for the guy, but at the same time I know, that you know, that you shouldn't have to change what you're doing on your property to cater to this guy. It might be a good spot but it might be a bad idea to stay there. The best thing to do would be to talk to the guy about it and possibly come to a compromise.

That's what I was thinking. How many times have you seen deer on the way back on the same trail. happened to me as I headed to my bear bait just yesterday. Huge doe broadside on the trail watching me on my return. They're quite curious.

Ahhh, sorry to have to tell you Mike; but with the sense of humour you have shown in the past I think you are. Welcome!

It doesn't read like guy is an idiot, I'm sure he knows your routine, and if he had paid attention the deer's routines. One should know what they are getting into when setting up. My one landowner allows many people onto his property to access the burn pile, and for other purposes. I have been in my stand and watched a guy drive up and throw a dead animal from a pest trap into the bush, the neighbour who rents the land has driven his ATV in, past my truck in the lane to check on crops in a back field. On another farm, I have had the landowner spreading liquid manure in a field beside me, though sometime to my benefit he is taking off corn! Even when they are cutting hay the noise helps cover mine. We must know what we are getting into prior to our hunt, for me flexibility is a necessity.

As for bumping deer, I have a landowner on camera, walking down a trail then a deer within 5 minutes on the same trail heading in the same direction.

The question is how would you feel if he did it to you?

I guess I should clarify the 'dog' issue as it seems to be a sticking point.....How many folks have seen a Berneses Mountain dog chase anything...they run about 20 yds stop and bark....I whistle they come back. It's about as close to harassing wildlife as my slamming the truck door at the barn 50 yrds away....the Deer look up and half the time continue grazing the soya.

The dogs 'chasing' is not the issue...it's just us (people and dogs) being on the tree line (leash or not) that causes the deer to 'flag'...

I laughed last night when the wife and I took the dogs for our evening walk and I was telling her about this discussion....her first words were.. "I'm not changing my routine for some guy hunting next door".....

And she's right...why should she ? I on the other hand ,as a fellow hunter and good sportsman, would make an effort to accommodate him now and again, but it's plain silly to expect me to stop all activity on my farm so I don't disturb his hunt.

edit add: I should note...I talked the wife into going a little early for the walk last night so there was a good hour before sunset, just in case the neighbour was out hunting...

No way will that big buck know when things are going to happen, 30min earlier, just messed up the whole thing.

I know what you are saying about the farmers coming out, we had the manure spreaders wreck a great goose setup in North Gower 2 years ago and my dad and I were almost hit by liquid manure back when I was a teen. We rarely hunted before the crops came off, I would hate to have something go down in a field with beans still on only to destroy a pile of them getting the animal out.

Although it sucks to have a hunt ruined, I tend to see it on Mikes side. As the hunter on the other property it could very well ruin a hunt, or it could be a blessing in disguise! If I was that hunter I would be out well before "the walk" for Mike to push anything out my way. I would almost be thinking of him as a dogger with a dog that only runs 20yrds!

Anyone that pushes bush that is on a buck knows they do not run straight. They will most likely circle around. We can not flame someone for doing something on his OWN property. I have been on a watch in a family owned sugar bush to only have the skidder go by and ask how things are going. Stuff happens but sometimes it happens for a reason, because after that seems like everything that was bedded down was moving and I filled my tag.

This happens all too often, unless you own the land you have no say at all.

I have a few friends who were angry that they were asked not to hunt a property until after the November shotgun hunt in SW Ontario. They felt that since they had been hunting it for 10 years they should be allowed to be there during the prime time. Well since they do not own the land they have no right to do anything, they can simply continue to help out the farmer, bring along some meat when they have some and ask again next year.

Be respectful to the owner but let the owner do what they want with their land.

If you need to control some land then you have the ability to go out and buy your own.

This post is nothing but a search for validation. If you feel bad about spooking the deer, be accommodating and vary your pattern a few days of the year. Curious to know why you started this thread?
What was the intended purpose of it?
Is it about expressing your landowner rights?
Is it about your neighbor is a nice guy, but not very bright when it comes to picking stand locations based on known variables?
What do you suppose your neighbor would think if he read this thread?
Do you think Karma will affect your hunting this fall?

What I got out of this post was that while this neighbour was excericising his right to build a new stand in a perfect looking spot after leasing out his farm to get good crops to draw deer out of Mikes and others farms there was one problem. Mike and his wife walk their dogs on their side of the fence early and late in the day as that's usually when dogs want to be outside and when they get to walk them.
Same as my place, my Gf can't do it when she's at work.

The moral of the story was, it's unfortunate this fella has planned his hunt in a manner it can be interrupted by his neighbor. Part of hunting is learning to adapt to situations out of your control and still be successful.

I have a good buck on my farm that's feeding in daylight hours In a food plot, 20 yards from my stand that I've been watching since last year. I was pumped for opening day, however I can't hunt there until the wind switches from the east. This is out of my control And there is little I can do but wait for the perfect wind. As once he busts me I won't see him again in daylight at this spot. My perfect plan for a opening day trophy with compound was ruined by something as simple as the wind. Looking at the forecast I may not be able to hunt there until next week.

ohh well I'll hunt my neighbours farms until then.

Like all threads posted on this forum it is to stimulate discussion and debate...with #55 posts it has done that.

If you don't 'get it' then your not on a forum for the same reasons as allot of us are.

I know my neighbour well enough to know he would surely laugh at the suggestion he call me first so I would alter my routine so he could hunt.. :)

Can't believe I just wasted my time reading all of these posts. I never saw a real reason for it. Your property use it your way, my only thoughts were the dogs chasing the deer on his property, but that was covered off after what 5 pages.

This is the comment missing from the original post. The farm is a business and as such activities related to it can not be trumped by someone hunting. In the first post you mention only causal dog walks which can be modified if you so wish. The devil is in the details.

I agree that it would be nonsensical to call and ask a neighbor to alter their routine so they could hunt.

I seem to have misread your OP , and that it was an invitation to debate or discuss, especially when your first few rebuttals suggested that anyone not commenting in support of you were lost in a twilight zone... but I do "get it" now

Mike, by the sounds of it your neighbor won't have a problem getting his deer this season, no matter where you walk your dogs. Sounds like there's plenty of activity there. As someone said earlier... if they're in the field, they've passed his ambush anyway. The only reason you're giving it a second thought at all is because you're a hunter as well. Your neighbor is lucky for that. He could have moved in next to a vindictive anti or a non-hunter who wouldn't even realize that the season is open yet. All of this aside, farm deer are quite used to the activity and probably know your routine better than you know theirs.

"Ruined" is pretty subjective too, by the way. Your neighbor's idea of a "ruined" hunt might not be the same as mine or yours.

That's your property. Do what you wish. If he has a problem with it then he can move his stand but it seems he's fine with it since he hasn't mode his stand. Case closed.

Will you be ok if your neighbour decides to call the MNR about your dogs running at large chasing deer during an open season??? Just a thought.....sometimes karma is a beeotch.

I too question why you would post this. Again, your property so walk where and when you want. But if you knew he was going to hunt opening morning, and you know what happens when you walk back there, but you still went anyways...........

OK Brent, So I'll put you in the the group that sets up a stand 200 yds of the walking trial in the public forest and then complains when a lady walks by with her dog......and then arrogantly complains they should put up sign to stop people from using the trails while your hunting.....LOL...

That's my take on it GW11....he's a trophy hunter, so he probably be looking for the Buck coming thru the bush 5 minutes before he has to get out of the stand. He said in the past he's not interested in the does/young bucks that would be in the fields this time of the year.

Funny thing, he's the type of guy that will feel bad that all this made me feel bad.... :)

For the rest: I'm closing the books on this thread, there are a few guys here who obviously just don't understand rural life or can comprehend an issue like this. Thankfully there are those here in the forum who due understand and 'get it'.
