I have been moose hunting in the far north since 1971 and have always just cut our own wood for camp from the clear cuts. A bud of mine was telling me you need to purchase a permit. I was wondering if anyone has had a problem doing it without a permit. I know one of our guys was told not to touch the birch logs or he would be charged, apparently it is left for the natives to harvest. So has anyone had issues over this .?:moose:
AFAIK,the only people that need a permit are commercial operations,such as people engaged in selling firewood. As for taking wood for your camp,only wood from dead falls may be used. There's big tickets for cutting green wood.
At our hunt camp in WMU 56 we have to purchase a $30 wood permit each year even though the area has been recently logged and there are tops everywhere. We were told that you are not allowed to cut any standing tree, even a dead one. As far as wood for a temporary moose camp up north we have never been bothered.
You can go to the MNR and buy a firewood permit for the number of cords you need. They will give you a map with the location of the nearest firewood area. You cannot pick up any wood without a permit.
Permit is pretty cheap but whatever you do......just dont take logs that are already on the side of the road nicely piled. Whew!!! learned that the hard way when I was a young pup!!
When camping on crown you do not need a permit to cut dead wood (it's suppose to be on the ground, but what ever). If cutting firewood for your house you need a permit. My buddy in Chalk River had one last year.
My understanding of the rules are similar to GWs. A permit is needed if you are going to haul the wood away. If you are burning on-site (i.e. camping) - no permit is required. Permit or not, I do not think you are allowed to cut live trees.
The last two posts have it correct. I believe if you do have a permit there is a clause that says standing dead trees may only be cut from june to september or something similar.
If guys are actively logging in the area dont touch anything without asking. If you do ask they may help you out and show you to the better stuff.
That's pretty much jt. And a permit is for a specific area, not where ever you want. I pay $50 for 4 cords of firewood.Quote:

sometimes your permit may stipulate other conditions as well. Are said we could not cut standing tree's even if they are dead. It also said we could not use ATV's, or trucks to haul the wood out. I'm guessing to ensure you don't tear up the land.

When we would camp on Crown and just needed campfire wood we never bothered as it would involve a days trip to get the permit. We were never questioned by game wardens.....
In my case, more like $4/face, plus the gas and so on. I never counted I just take as much as I can because if I don't it will rot there. Yesterday I went for partridge where I get my fire wood, I found pils of hardwood logs rotten in an old log yard, I guess the logger couldn't get it all before the winter and it wasn't worth it to come back for it the next year.Quote:

It appears that some districts are enforcing the act with a little more enthusiasm than others. In Sudbury the MNR is charging those who are picking up tops and culls from cutovers. This is wood that has already been paid for by the companies through stumpage fees. It is also the very same wood that the companies will bulldoze into piles in the late fall and burn to clear the site for future plantings.
Can't get much more petty than that.
Some things never cease to amaze me here . What is going to happen when all with common sense pass on or is there an app needed for that too ? Yup this ol trapper shaking his head again .

years ago my hometown in the GTA built a new launch ramp and parking lot.....You know, one of those big concrete things with no moving parts...The old ramp was free to use, but they could not open the new one until they had the user fees figured out. This took about 8 months during which the ramp sat with a barricade so it could not be used. As soon as the fees were in place, they bulldozed the old gravel ramp and left it sitting...
I deal with Sudbury as well. We wanted to cut down a big old pine that was rotting and threatening to fall on our LUP parking lot. They wanted us to pay a stumpage fee to cut it down. I told the guy when I get around to coming into Sudbury I'll stop in the office and pay.......Quote:

according to the MNR it means when your hauling it away for personal use.

I looked at the link and don't see where you only need a permit if you haul it away. Looks like technically you need a fuel wood permit for any wood for personal use including a campfire (according to the MNR website). I guess it boils down to discretion if the C.O. doesn't charge you for the wood at the campfire.
