Lol gotta watch those I just learnt what the difference is during the opener. I had herd about them just didn't know what defined them.
Young pintail Hen
Pintail hen
Drake goldeneye?
Actually one of my favourite puddle ducks there. Usually get about a dozen a year but have yet to get a nice December sprig. Another tougher one to identify for some is a hen gadwall.
Bald Eagle
There was a thread on CW last year - a duck id quiz only based on wing plumage
We should get that going again. Was a great idea.
Im going to go out on a limb here and say that its a dead one.
been holding it breath too long, its beak is blue. :-)
Also this bird?
No one?
Scaup hen
Possibly a greater based on the amout of white on the wings
Its a greater scaup otherwise known as a 'broadbill' or big bay broadbill. White extends through both the secondary and primary feathers.
Too easy mate. Didn't even have to open the thumbnail on the first one.
Here's a hen/drake pair for ID:
GWT not what I posted
Yes pintail I thought juvee drake because of the bill there is slight blueing on the bill there was also many pin feathers coco said hen as many others did but definitely pintail. After referencing hens can develop the blue on the bill as well. Drakes generally have longer necks then hens and a bronze green on the wing patch I'm pretty confident that it was an immature from what I saw

Here is one that may be a bit more challenging, a realistic view of a duck coming into your spread.

I had the same situation last Friday, first year drake pintail. Had to use the bill and wing to determine the sex. Here is a good vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVfApUgZEys
Still waiting for a correct ID on the hen/drake pair...
Or so you think ;)
Like I said, still waiting on a correct ID. I had to bump up the game a notch. Buzz, myself, and a few other members have been playing this game via e-mail for a while. There have been some doozies!
To be honest, I would guess GWT if you showed me that picture! I think Steve D. might be the only 1% who would notice. I just wanted to put up a challenging one.
We could just take it to extremes with a bunch of exotic species, but I feel this one is warranted since it does get harvested in N.A.
Technically, so do these:
Green wing teal ? go easy , I don't hunt ducks yet lol
No fair with the hybrids lol. The black and white one is a tufted duck.
The teal are not necessarily hybrid, they are a different sub-species.
Good catch on the tufted duck! I tried to pick one that didn't show the tuft too prominently.
I guess this means you're up to post a pic...
Hints: "DR, looks like you may have taken a trip to EURope and ASIA recently"
I believe bird #2 is a Eurasion Widgeon. Bird #3 looks like a Redhead, however, given the theme of this thread I believe I could be wrong.
I thought redhead as well but not sure of the eye color.
Could it be a Redhead-Canvasback hybrid?
Correct on the Eurasian wigeon jda.
You're very warm with the red-headed duck and are correct in assuming that it isn't a redhead. And no, I haven't brought out the hybrids (yet). Along the same theme of "exotic species" that get occasionally harvested in North America.

I know, likely not fair but.
Well played Jdangelo , unless of course we are looking at the same ID guide. lol
Correct on the pochard and my guess was also grey duck for the butt. Now it's jdangelo's turn...

Likely an easy one for you more experienced guys, however, I just saw and shot my first of this duck this past weekend.
Too funny.

Wasn't sure if the picture worked the first time...
Here's a couple of easy ones Attachment 26946Attachment 26947
Ooh!! I like this game!!! DR - when do I get to start posting hybrids? ?? ;)
I don't make the rules, but I think you specifically need to ID this one before you can play:
You might recognize that one :p
Funny story john
Not what we thought
You may not even know what this was =)
I emailed you but its still in my outbox.
Email sent - enjoy that one

Anyone?

Pochard x Can?
Redhead x can
Darn it, I suck at this game when it comes to hybrids!
List what you see, hens and drakes of each species.
Attachment 27001
American wigeon drake and hen, ringneck drake and hen, redhead drake, eurasian wigeon drake, Two drake gadwalls.
Close?

The gaddy's were hiding pretty good, but got them at the last minute :)
Nice bunch of birds in that pic....

Attachment 27091Attachment 27092Attachment 27093I need some added info on this one I know it has canvasback in it and it has a brown eye can't see or feel any pin feathers close to a widgeon in size. Thoughts?
That is a juvinile drake canvasback.
Where abouts you hunting? Ptbo area??
S.
Canvasback?
Canvasback drake was my first inclination what threw me off was the brown not red eyes. Then I thought it may have been a hybrid cross with a mallard. The breast feathers looked similar. Was my first can was at Luther which was really slow
