I hunt in Simcoe County. Driving up to the cottage i often pass by areas that i think would be great for hunting. I only hunt for waterfowl, upland game and small game. How do i find out who owns these various plots of forests? usually there are a few houses or farms to knock on doors but that can be time consuming and being a weekend warrior doesnt give me much time. Is their a way of finding out who owns these various forests and fields online or how else could i do it?

I usually just stop at the first houses I see and ask.

Yeah i figured as much. I guess ill pack an extra case of beer for the cottage this weekend.

If you go to the township office they should be able to help you get contact info of the landowners

Option A- Going to the Land Registry Office
Spend many hours of your nights looking at maps to try and locate the areas you liked, seeing if they're crown land or not, driving to the land registry office, paying for parking and gas, spend a few hours finding out the land owners information, paying the fees associated with the searches, driving back home, working off the fees associated with the searches the next day, then driving up to the area you want to hunt on your weekend, pulling up to the house directly beside the property, then getting an answer from the landowner.
Option B- Going up on the Weekend to Scout
Drive around areas you know from the past, stop in at the house nearest the property, ask if they're the landowner or who is and get a yes/no answer if you can hunt there, continue on to the next house.
Don't be shy.
Yep pretty much the only two ways to do it, knock and hope you find the right person, or they know who to talk to. or B, go to the land registry office and find out for sure.
Remember that this is a really busy time for farmers and they may not appreciate you asking them to hunt while they are busy harvesting, planting and tilling.
And don't always believe locals when they tell you who they "think" might be the landowner.
Pretty nice here, buy a county map and every 1/4 section has the owners name right on the map. Also the Range Roads and the Township roads are all numbered. You just have to stop at any intersection to know where you are and look up the land owners name
Also be polite introduce yourself, drive up there laneway nicely don't rip up there at 100 km/hr and once you get access always stop by once in a while over the year to maintain a presence so that you can continue that access.
Good idea to take the extra beer because most people are impressed when you have beer breath and are asking to carry a gun on their property.
You can use the simcoe county interactive online map, get the roll number of the lot/lots and call the township.
