Target block for my crossbow.

Im looking for a target block for my crossbow. I have an Excalibur 380 matrix and use field points and broadheads. It says its 380 fps but Im sure its actually around 350fps with the bolts, field tips and string they are sold with. I have shot 3 different foam targets from 20 yards and every time my bolts have almost completely passed through leaving about 6" of my bolt buried in the target and the rest sticking out the back side. The problem with this is that its starting to wreck and deform my fletching's. Im looking to see if anybody else has had this problem or found a specific target that would stop the arrow before the fletching's enter the target. Thx

Rhinehart 18-1. Will take any bolt from any crossbow (I shoot a matrix 405) with any head and leave lots sticking out the front of the target.

I'm using the crossbow block with my 380 and works well but getting soft now after a few years ... be hard pressed to beat a rhinehart.

The best target is home made. Take a feed bag and stuff it super tight by hand, with any or all of this stuff - plastic grocery bags, garbage bags, saran wrap, and pallet wrap. Any thin film plastic. Once the feed bag is stuffed full, just use a tie strap to close off the bag. Draw your target spots with a permanent marker.

Your field tips won't penetrate more than 3 or 4 inches and can be pulled out with 2 fingers every time. Keep turning the bag and flipping it to use new undamaged areas of the bag. Once the bag is wore out, simply stuff the guts of it into a new feed bag. The target will last a life time, with a few extra feed bags on hand to re stuff. Each bag is good for a few hundred shots.

Might take a long time to come up with enough bags and pallet wrap, but its worth the effort. I had a friend who managed a grocery store and I simply brought him a half a dozen feed bags and he got his employees to stuff them for me. The 6 bags were enough to make 2 targets, once they were tightly repackaged by me.

By far the best target for arrow removal.

Is that the Rinehart XBow-2-Go Self-Healing Crossbow Target that you were talking about?

I bought a ShotBlocker -Travel Pro made by Delta McKenzie at Canadian Tire last week for $69.00. I target shoot with my Excalibur Exocet and lots of arrow still sticking out for easy removal. Highly recommend it.

Yellow dog - I actually picked that one up earlier this week from Canadian Tire and all 5 of the shots I took at 20 yards buried my fletching's leaving nothing out the front of the target and exposing about 10-12" of arrow out the back side.

I had it out closer to 30 yards and it would bury them at 20 yards. Set my scope at 30 yards and was dead on accurate.

I have a crossbow black block for my matrix 355 and it has plenty of stopping power for the bolts.

how far are the bolts penetrating your black block and from what distance are you shooting at?[

I shoot from 20-50 yds. On a 18" bolt I'm getting it about half way in at 20 yds and a tad less at 50.

I'm looking for a new target for my crossbow also - it seems one of the biggest problems guys have is not getting a target to stop the bolt but getting the bolt out of the target - I got on Cabela's site and viewed the targets then read the reviews - most guys complained about removing the bolt - at this point I don't know what to get -

The Block is the way to go bud. Just need to give the bolt a little wiggle and it'll come right out

I use The Block as well with a Matrix 380. To make arrow extraction easier I spray a little but of pam on a paper towel an wipe on the front half of the bolt . Works great when using field points

I just got a pile of used feed bags. Stuff them all in one as full and tight as you can, turn it side ways and shoot. It is easy to pull arrows, 2 fingers usually, after a few shots just punch it up and away you go. As the outside bag gets worn just stuff into another bag, and they are free too! No broad heads though. I've only tried field points.

Sorry Mastercaster just read your post, got my bags from local farmer, happy to get rid of since feed mills won't reuse them any more.

Was using the block at a local archery range with my barnett quad 400 and it buried the 22" bolts to the fletching at 20 yards. Had to use a rope tie on some to even budge them. Thankfully the range was at the local hunting store I frequent and just bought the bolts from them, the guy there replaced all the bolts with damaged fletching for free.

That's exactly what Im trying to avoid, The first couple block type targets I have tried failed miserably. My bolts are coming out the back side and completely burring my fletching's which is starting to deform them. Im not sure how fast my matrix 380 actually is, but Im sure its not the 380 fps that's advertised since Im using the factory bolts and string that came with it. I think I had read somewhere that to get those speeds they use a specific bolt, string etc.. Would really like to know roughly how fast it actually is. Anybody with a matrix 380 using the factory set up know what speeds they are getting out of their crossbow?

For field point I use the Bulldog targets and have shot my Matrix 380 from 15 to 60 yards with no issue, easy to remove and will not penetrate too deep even at 15 yards. Use a broadhead like a slick trick, they fly identical to a fielpoint so no need to shoot very often.

Oh ya, Bulldog offers free facing replacement for the life of the target as well.

I agree with the Crossbow Block...

Im seeing the consensus here is the crossbow block but is everyone shooting broadheads into it......I have no problem with my field points, shooting dead on at all ranges but when I shoot my broadhead, it shoots way different and I also am looking for a target that stops broadheads without burying to the fletching or pass throughs.....I need to resight my bow in but don't want to keep buying blocks.....gets very expensive

I've been shooting broadheads at my rinehart 18-1. Cuts up a bit more, pulled a couple chunks of foam out, but no serious deterioration. Did lots of shooting this Fall with broadheads and no worries about burying it or passthrough.

I'm just getting into crossbow hunting, the XB that I have shoots 365fps, and so far I have been shooting with field points into a large bag type target I got from Lebaron for $80 - seems to stop the points nicely ....

I don't really see a point to practicing with anything other that field points if you are using mechanicals when hunting.

Depends on the mechanical. Many shoot the same as a field point of the same weight, others not so much. As an example NAP 170 FOCs do not shoot the same as a field point.

After watching all those videos of these new high speed crossbows penetrating 3/4 " sheets of plywood, I'm thinking you guys are buying way too powerful bows for hunting deer....and the cost of that is going to be eating up expensive Blocks.

The only Block that will stop these fast arrows before they bury themselves nock deep will be something like a 'Black Block' and it will run you around $160.

Actually more expensive when you can't find where your arrow went.....a bale of hay is good for recurves and slower compounds.....but it (and bags of rags) are useless for these new crossbows.

I have a 175lb Horton that buries itself 11" into the old standard foam blocks that Walmart sells for $40...these new bows will push arrows almost clean thru them.

I only have a cheap Barnett and my bolts went through the bales most of the time and if they didn't go through they were buried right up to the knock.

Mike - I don't know if you are aware of it but Horton has gone out of business - sold to Long Point - I was at a Cabela's the other day to buy some bolts - after I asked the salesman if they put new strings on crossbows he said that you probably have to have one made up special by some bow shop - I have a Horton Legend XL - make sure you wax the string after 5 shots so you don't wear out the string - Horton crossbows were always very good and were one of the first companies that got into making them - I wonder why they went out of business -

Just because your broadheads advertise same as feild point, let me assure you you need to shoot them a little to know where they will hit. I also go as far to cull my bolts because three bolts purchased out of the same box sometimes will shoot differently from one another.

I have the rhino target, best one I've had yet by far.

I just picked up the Rinehart xbow-2-go target for my matrix 380 cause I'm tired of my bolts burring themselves or passing through my old target and wrecking the fletching's. I hear good things about the Rinehart targets and will post my results once I get a chance to test it out. It definitely seems a lot more solid or dense then my previous targets.

So far so good, Shot my PSE DNA SP bow last night with field points a couple times at about 10 yards for s and giggles, the Rinehart xbow-2-go stopped them about 6"-8" in.
