So yesterday I finally seen my first deer while hunting. It was a little far and moving way to quick to make a solid shot with my flintlock but I took a shot. Needles to say I missed. So while reloading just as I set the new ball the ram rod broke. I didn't feel comfortable using it last night knowing I could not load another if needed so I borrowed a inline for the evening hunt. So today I'm heading out with my brothers flintlock.
?????? I have been shooting various muzzle loaders now for I think 42 years and have not yet broken a ram rod, are you just getting " too excited and not paying attention to what you are doing "?.If so this could endanger you.
jaycee. The first one before the deer season was a little dry and when it broke my hand was to far from the muzzle. The second was a last minute replacement that was to short so I was using a extension. It was due to thrown on the kindling pile. It broke just as u set the ball. So probably 50/50 operator error and warn ramrods.
I take it you are using a wooden ram rod on a traditional flintlock with a conical ball , are you lubing the patch that your seating the ball on ? Mine seats with not much force, I usually use 2 hands to keep the ram rod from flexing.
ps only having one shot shouldn't be a huge problem, make it count. I've never shoot a deer twice with my TC.
Im using a lubed patched ball that seats relatively easy Yes one shot works great in most cases but there the chance you might need a second. and that's a chance I don't want to take.Quote:

I also use a very tight ball and patch combination. If you were to use a looser combo it would be easier to seat them. You might want to look into a synthetic ramrod just for hunting and an aluminum one for the range.

I have a wooden rod for show, and a synthetic for hunting with..... Becky at Hillfolk Muskets was great to deal with.....

Yes I think in the end I need a multiple rods. I have a decent aluminum range rod. Might look into the wood with synthetic or metal core.
