Air Gun stock spring vs. high powered

Hello All,

I know that the "high powered" air guns can't be bought in Canada 900fps+.

I also know that the 500 fps limit on air rifles is purely based on a weaker spring installed to keep the fps low.

Question is I have my PAL can I get a high powered spring installed onto my rifle or would that make it illegal for use in Canada?

If so where would one get the high powered spring and how easy would it be to install?

Any and all of these facts could be suspect or wrong, just looking into making a fun rabbit/squirrel gun and would enjoy the extra 500 fps if legal and possible.

Since when can't you buy a high powered air gun in Canada? Check Cabela's Canada.

Anything over 495 fps requires PAL.

For sure you can buy a high powered air rifle... You just need a PAL to purchase, own/possess one. I see them in my local gun store all the time. many that shoot over 1000fps.
the under 500 fps air rifles you see at crappy tire etc. are sold that way because anything that shoots less than 500 fps doesn't require a PAL, only need to be over 18 to buy one.

Hopefully that answers the first part of your question...

I have no idea where you could get a stronger spring to install. Maybe check the length/diameter of the spring in there now, and try to find a stronger (thicker) replacement somewhere... online? princess auto?. Sorry, I can't help with that part...

I would check with the company that makes your rifle to see if they have a high powered version.....

I suppose budget and individual preferences will influence any buying decision. There are a variety of brands out there. Recommend a .22 for hunting. For quality spring piston air rifles, you may wish to look at the Weihrauch and Diana products.

I bought a Diana a number of years ago at Gobles in London. It is a .177 rated at 1200 fps. 3x9 scope on it made for air rifles. Deadly accurate on 50 yard starlings. 1/2'' group at 25 yards. Not cheap but very good.

My most favourite air rifle was a Diana 35 which I bought in my old country around 1977.
It was a .22 cal (5.5 mm). Its power and accuracy was simply amazing.
I took numerous pigeons and doves and other critters with it.

As much as I love air rifles, I have never invested in one since 1984. To me, hunting with shotguns and rifles is satisfying enough and for plinking I can use my .22 anytime. Still enjoy shooting air rifles when possible. :)
