I have an old Remington Mohawk 600 243 with a scope base screwed into the top of the receiver and was wondering if it would be a good/cool idea to mount a reddot on it as a brush gun for deer hunting. What do you think? I was thinking of using a cheap ($50) one from Canadian Tire.
that is a sweet rifle you have I would be more inclined to put a fixed 4 power on her for hunting .something nice and compact with clear view and fast on target .would make a great deer and yote gun,i do not like to worry about batterys in the winter .what you take for her .Dutch
My young son has the same red dot on his .22 and it works well but I am not sure how long it would last on a centerfire rifle with considerably more recoil (not that a 243 is heavy on recoil). If you are set on a red dot step up in price a bit and look at a good bushnell or a bit more and check out the vortex offerings or go nuts and look at an aimpoint.
If I was going to go red dot, I'd go with a Bushnell TRS-25, they are a bit more money ($125-150 most retailers) but they have a good review and will handle the recoil well. Amazon.ca has them on for $118, but I think I saw Epps has them for just a bit more.
Don't cheap out on optics this is a common mistake, I am pretty confident in saying there are several deer every year that get missed or worse, wounded by people using cheap optics. Bush hunting I would go with a decent quality 2 - 7 power scope.
I agree. I use an old Bushnell Scope Chief 1.5-4.5 and it works perfectly. I never take it off x2 even for 100 yard shooting.Quote:

Wish I had a 600 in 243 for my bush gun.....not that I need another bush gun but those little Mohawks are just as handy as a 30-30 with more range when needed.
Stick a scope on it, you will wind up using the lowest setting.....
As mentioned earlier, if possible move up to a low power scope.
As Cintax said, a 1.5 x 4.5 would be an excellent choice. I used to have one and wish I still did. Great for the bush. And looked great on the gun. Ya, I care about that.
Presently, I have a 2 x 7 on my .243.
A red dot is a fraction of the scope $'s and a good choice.
Down the road you might decide to try a scope.
I have a Ruger M77 .243 ultralight and it will never be offered for sale. Got a B&L 1.5-5 X on it and have had several people try to buy it once they handled it. Do that Remmy a favor and put a low power good quality scope on it.
I don't understand all the support for a scope in a "brush gun".
NOTHING is faster to get on target than a red dot sight (otherwise the military wouldn't use them for close quarters infantry work). The average length of an encounter with a deer where I hunt is usually no more than a few seconds and getting on target quickly allows for a more controlled shot. In addition, with my AimPoint I can ethically shoot to well over 200 meters with a solid rest.
The reality is that in my hunting area I will never have a shot further than 100 meters and the vast majority of shots will be under 60 meters.
I honestly feel that if more big woods hunters tried a quality red dot sight (e.g. Aimpoint) their magnified optics would be collecting dust in their gun safe.
I've been using Bushnell red/green dot sights for 20 yrs. and have no regrets. I hunt the woods., under 100yds. The scope was dumped yrs ago. If I was hunting fields, a scope might be in order, but in the bush, I'll stick with my Bushnell/Vortex, red/green dots.
I have used the Bushnell trs-25 this year on my semi 12ga slug gun. I was slightly skeptical at first, but it was great to handle in the woods I hunt (100 yards max shot). I managed to drop a doe with it at 50 yards and it proved very reliable and willing to hold up to the recoil after a number of range sessions. I just always pack an extra battery in case.
Aimpoints are amazing optics, they are just slightly out of my price range for now.
For a brush gun I would go with the red dot but definately something a little better in quality have heard good things about the trs 25
I've never owned a Red Dot but have shot rifles that wore them and had buddies swear at them when the batteries died. As I got older I slowly switched from peep sights to scopes and have only had one occasion when the scope was a handicap.
That was a 10' shot at a standing deer. I coulda taken a head shot with peeps or open sights but just pointed at the chest and fired as I didn't want to bring the gun back to my shoulder so I could see thru the glass.
The speed of finding the game in the scope has never been an issue because the guns fit me.
The battery doesn't just 'DIE" it gets weaker and weaker. Mine usually last a couple of years, before needing replacement. This is a wide spread fear, of people, thinking of using red/green dot sights. Mine is on, the whole time i'm on watch.
My Aimpoint has a battery life of 50 000 hours. That is 5 years of continuous use!

Sure I would. But it would be best if you had the chance to try a buddies on it and then compare it with a scope on the same rifle to see if it suits you and the gun.
I have had a Lucid hd7 on my 870 for about 3 years . Lots of slugs through it and a few deer killed. A little pricier and bulkier than some of the others mentioned. Holds its zero and a triple A battery lasts about 2 years.Quote:

And the ability to shoot with both eyes open is a bonus for getting on target fast. I am looking at an aimpoint for my #1 in 45-70 as I think it will be a good match as most of my shooting with this gun will be under a hundred yards.
