Scope Reccomendations for Lever Action

Hey Guys just picked up a Lever action Browning BLR .308 and I am thinking of putting a scope on it...just looking for suggestions

I was looking at Burris fullfield II 2x7x35 that I would be getting in on a trade offer with burris rings...thoughts???

but wondering if i should go with a 3x9x40....going to be using this gun for moose and deer.....will be hunting everything from bush to fields...with most shots under 200 yrds.


I am looking at putting a decent scope on this gun but not lookin to break the bank of course either so lookin to spend up to 300.00 for a decent scope.

IF i was to buy....i was lookin at:

bushnell elite/legend
leupold rifleman/vx1
vortex diamondback


and suggestions are appreciated

I've used my dad's Bushnell elite on his 308. It's real nice. If you're going under 200 yds, a 3-9 might be more than you need.

2 x 7 x 35 burris would be perfect for that gun. IMOP

I wouldn't go with too big a scope for a BLR, 2 x 7 would be plenty. I have a 2 x 7 on my moose rifle and don't think I've ever felt the need to go above 4x, keep in mind the lower the power the wider the field of view. When still hunting it is always on the lowest setting. My deer rifle is a 308 Ruger with 18.5 barrel and I have a 1.5 x 4 love this setup. Most of my scopes are Leupold VX111's most picked up used for decent prices, same cost as a new bushnell, burris etc. can't compare the two for quality.

any experience with the burris fullfield II ...I have heard a few other members on here reviews and they seem to be decent. I also have a bolt action 30-06 with a bushnell legend 3x9x50 on it I really like the rainguard feature but If i KNew I needed to potentially be taking longer shots then 200 yrds I can always use this gun as well......I have always wanted a quality lever gun tho for multi purpose hunts.

Leupold 2x7x33 on my .308 BLR and with the rings I can still use the irons at short range and or when you need to be faster and or if your comfortable to take a shot at a moving/running target lead them. Small enough its not a hindrance when humping bush or additional weight I'm going to notice, big enough to let enough light in, and give me the magnification for longer shots, and or a wider FoV when not dialed in ( at 2x) which is pretty much where I leave it, and shorter ranges. At least for me a solid all purpose rifle for pretty much anything/anywhere I might hunt in Ont.

I have both the elite (3x9) and a Leupold VX-2 (4x12) both are great scopes, but the Leupold wins out IMO. For shots under 200 at moose I think a 2x7 would be more than adequate.

Have you looked at Nikon scopes? You may be impressed by the quality of the optics at a reasonable price as they are experts in that field. Available at SAIL, Cabela's, etc.

What about redfield revenge or revolution......I have never used one but like the idea of the BDC reticle as well?

Bdc reticle isnt needed for under 200 meters. 308 is essentially point of aim at that distance.

Good point...just thought if for some reason I had to take a longer shot it would help take out the guess work........but come to think of it I am not sure I have had to take a shot longer with any firearm yet really.

I have a Burris Fullfield II 3x9x40 on my 300wm its been bulletproof, no fogging in the rain, never had to adjust it. Great scope and a true lifetime warranty, that is transferable or so they claim.

Thanks for the info...see what other recommendations and reviews I get, currently I have an offer for a trade on a Burris Fullfield II 2x7x35 with burris rings......I have never owned burris, but willing to give it a shot if the reviews are decent.

I have a Leopold 2 x 7 on my BLR. I'm a Leopold fan. I always considered Burris to be a lower end scope but I think that has changed in recent years.Attachment 27849

I would mount that scope on that rifle in a heartbeat. I had one on a Win 70 .257 Roberts and foolishly sold it with the rifle. I presently have two Leupold 2-7X32 Vari-X II scopes I use on Savage 99's and Marlin 336's and IMHO the Burris offers about equal performance at a lower price point. It also has a feature I like, where you turn the entire ocular bell to change magnification, instead of just the mag ring. VERY handy when wearing gloves.
How does THIS sound? If you get the Burris on a good trade, try it and see if you like it. If you do, great! If you don't, I'll buy it from you for what you have into it. Seriously. I could certainly use it!
I bet you won't want to sell it.

I would put my vote in for a Nikon.
I have a Monarch 3-9x40 with BDC reticle on my .270win and love it. - clear glass, doesn't fog, bright at dawn/dusk when light levels are low, accurate turrets and adjustments, holds zero. The BDC reticle does take a lot of guess work out of it for hold over at longer ranges... me personally, I would rather have and not need, then need and not have.

2-7 power is OK, but having that extra magnification really does come in handy - seeing groups at the range from the bench without going down-range to check, positively identifying an animal at a bit longer range (age, gender, size, etc.), shooting smaller targets like coyotes, etc.

If I didn't have that Nikon, I would buy a vortex, leupold, or bushnell elite.

That's my $0.02 worth.

I have a Bushnell 3200 Elite 2-7 x 32 on my Remington 742 Woodmaster Carbine. This is my moose gun for still hunting and is a very nice fit. Although not a lever and not a BLR it does prove to be a nice scope in thick brush/tag alders and puts the bullet where I want anywhere between me and 200 yards out.

Normally parked on 2X while walking I will turn it up to 7X for targets.

redfield 2x7x33???? are the optics on redfields comparable to other top brands?

Aimpoint Micro or Hunter provided your shooting opportunities will be under 200 meters. Zeroed at 100 meters the 308 will only be hitting few inches low at 200 meters. Nothing is faster at short ranges than an Aimpoint.

If you anticipate most of your shooting to be a more stationary targets (feeding deer) at intermediate ranges (150 - 300 meters) I would echo the 2 - 7 x scope recommendation.

I like the 2-7 idea, BUT make sure that it is mounted at the right height for your face when you are snuggled down to the gun. If you have to raise your head and move it around to find the crosshairs, then you need to change something and might as well go to an Aimpoint..:rolleyes:

With most deer being shot at first and last light...will a 33 - 35mm objective gather sufficient amount of light as a 40 mm would???

not from my experience, but your mileage may vary.
On my serious hunting firearms, that I rely on to bring home the bacon, I go with 40mm lens

Put a Leupold VX3 1.5x5 on or if budget is an issue the Leupold VX1 1x4 will get it done too. The advantage of these 2 scopes is generous eye relief and and large eye box. This means as you snap up the rifle to your shoulder the sight picture will be bang on instead of having to adjust/reposition to get a clear picture like many cheaper and higher powered scopes. I have owned a few BLR's and everyone hd a Leupold 1.5x5 on it. Putting a large heavy high powered scope on a slick and handy carbine like a BLR defeats the purpose im my opinion. 99% of game taken in Ontario is taken at under 200yds. In fact I would say 75% of deer are taken at 50yds and less and a moose is big enough that 4 or 5x is all you need. Also as already said by Blasted range finding reticles are basically useless with the ranges we hunt. All they do is confuse most shooters when it's "go time". They are best suited to varmint rifles.

The Leupold I have on my BLR is VX-2 2x7x33mm on Leupold std Tikkka T3 Whitetail Hunter 54447 scope mounts.
I also agree with everything terrym said above. Those low power variable Leupold scopes are fantastic. And I love the way they look on BLR's.

Great advice...i will check those out as well....I am also looking at the redfield line in 2x7 which from what I gather is basically the equivalent of the vx-1 and has some great reviews...with generous eye relief

Next question what would be a good reticle without going with a BDC....the redfield has a 4 plex? I am sure its mostly preference but just curious to hear what others think and use.

The most effective reticle on a big game rifle is a standard plex or if available a heavy plex. That more than anything else will help you aim properly in poor light situations. Fine crosshairs and BDC type ones are best suited to shooting groundhogs on a bright sunny summer day. In the snow and rain when you have an 8 point buck trotting by and have about 3 seconds to identify it as legal and then make a good shot all those trinkets just slow you down. Just as an aside, the most popular scope used by guides in Africa and Alaska when loss of life is a very real possibility the Leupold 1.5x5 is the most popular choice. They also never use see through mounts as again it just forces you to make a decision between 2 options and that can be enough to miss an opportunity. A low mounted, lower powered variable is the best option. If you dislike scopes then I would recommend yo just use a Williams type peep sight and restrict your shots to where you can hit a 6" circle off hand every shot, not just once out of 5 shots. I know people who can do that at 100 yds. They are a rare exception with excellent eye sight. Few people over 40 can be effective at long range with iron sights. In fact the front bead pretty well covers the entire deer at 100yds so I can't see how one can make an accurate shot. You are just shooting "at" a deer at that point not at a chosen point .

Thanks terry....Actually the gun currently sits with williams peep on it and altho I like it and it shoulders quickly and on target....I would just prefer a scope...to get a little more range and a little more light gathering for further shots if needed. Most of my shots will be well within 200 yrds.

one setup I am tossing around currently is a redfield 2x7x33 with 4 plex reticle and leupold Std rings and bases.

The only rifle I own that doesn't have a scope is my pre 64 Winchester 30WCF. It has a Williams and is my dogging rifle. Even my turkey gun has a red dot.
The Redfield 2x7 is a good choice. It's made in the same factory as Leupold just sold as a price point scope that's all. Very good value for the money and it has the same optical specs as the leupold. A Bushnell Elite class scope is a very good one too but I wouldn't go any bigger than a 2x7. No need for more magnification and you are just adding weight to a light nice handling rifle. You carry a rifle all week, shoot it very little and when you do it's rarely from a rest. I consider deer rifles not that different than my bird guns. Gotta be quick and nice to carry. Fit is very important. If it is a bit too long when wearing heavy hunting clothes then shorten it up so it fits well. You won't be big game hunting much in a tshirt.

I mounted the Leopold VX3 1.5x5 on my 30-30 and so far I'm very please with it. It never fogged up in any weather yet, I can see very well true it when it's dark, very easy to get it center on a moving game and it doesn't look too bad on a lever. It's always on the lowest setting and never had to move it to power 5 yet.
I also have a Redfield on my 243 (3x9-40), good scope for the price, clear and all but it did fog up a couple a weeks ago going out for yotes so it is not the best.

I went with the Duplex and never wish to have something else. I think it's like anything you get use to what you have.

Send it back for warranty. They have a great one.

Make sure that the scope mount is high enough so you can get your thumb on the hammer with gloves on - I have a Marlin model 336 with a Redfield 2X7 on it - the space between the bottom of the scope and the hammer is a little too tight - would be nicer if it was a little bigger - by the way - that scope is over 40 years old and has been good since the day I bought it -

Just put a hammer extension on if needed. Cheap and 5 minutes to install, they come with the proper sized allen key.

Joe- You should break down and go for one of those newfangled hammer extensions that stick out the side of your Marlin. They work great and don't get in the way.

What if the hammer is not tapped for such an extension....the gun I bought came with the hammer extension but no where on the actual hammer is it tapped to screw in such a device...I was a bit boggled.

I don't think any hammers are actually tapped. There is a lock screw that you tighten only. They are specific to the rifle though as not all hammers have the same profile. see link:

You can order hammer extensions from Cabelas. I put a Bushnell TR-25 red dot on my Marlin 1895. I haven't had it to the range,yet. Hopefully,it can handle the recoil.

Great gun. I had a 3x9 Bushnell elite on see through mounts. I wanna say it's a 4200 with 40mm. I found that the scope was too high with the mounts so I went to a regular Leopold medium mount. I had a way better cheek weld but found the 3x9 too much. I might look at the Redfield you mentioned or some of the other 1x5 2x7 scopes mentioned as I won't often be over 200 and if I am I have a rifle for that.

Very tiny screw that requires very careful tightening so as not to strip and blue loctite or clear nail polish so that they don't come loose. They work great.

Would anyone with a Blr and a hammer extension be able to post a pic of exactly where the tiny screw is on the hammer you have to remove.....I havent actually had a look at mine yet mine the idea of such a thing is appealing if I toss a scope on it.

I had a look at mine and the tiny allen screw is inside the knurled knob and threads through the extension and puts pressure onto the side of the hammer. That is how it is held in place.

My google fu is coming up empty so can you post a pic of the one you have?

I can certainly try sometime after work.......posting pics on here and I go together about as well as oil and water...may have to see if my 8yr old can give me a hand lol

in meantime the model of BLR I have is a LT WT 81 in .308 not sure if that helps.....I dont know alot about it other then the member I bought it off is a greta guy...and the gun is in mint cond and a thing of beauty...probably covered in drool!!!lol

See post 48 - browning does not recommend the user of hammer extensions. So its a pretty good bet your rifle is will not have threaded holes for this - unless someone had it custom tapped - which would be a complicated thing to do given that the existence of clamp-ons which wouldn't require this.

Anyone out there have a 'factory' browning hammer extension to contradict the above? The marlins I got new come with them. But they are different from the ones with the round knurled part. Never taken them off, so I don't know if they are clamp or threaded.

Could just be lawyers covering their arses but the newer version of the BLR with it's pivoting hammer may not accept an extension well? I only owned the the original version and they took an extension no problem.

I am left handed so the extension I have protrudes to the left. The attachement has a type of dovetail that wraps around the hammer and is secured with a set screw.Attachment 27887

Thanks roper.....I def dont have that on the one I bought....the hammer on mine has the half and the pivoting forward hammer to prevent accidental firing pin bump.......so prob safe to say mine was never tapped for the extension I suppose...guess if I want one the clamp on may be the way to go, will have to see how much clearance there is once I get a scope on her.

With the scope coming back over the hammer, I feel the extension is needed. It gives you good secure unencombered control of the hammer.

Browning no longer includes them with their rifles which is unfortunate because they were much better than the "after market" extensions,although,the "after market" are excellent quality being round,knurled and ambidextrous. There are two types for wide hammer handguns and narrow hammer which most rifles use. My only complaint is with the way that they're packaged. The set screws are really tiny and only loose-fit inside the extension,itself. When opening the ziplock bag,great care must be taken that the set screw doesn't fall out. If it lands on carpet,it disappears,never to be seen again. If it lands on hardwood,it'll bounce all the way over to your neighbors house,making the hammer extension instantly useless (unless you can find another set screw that fits,chances of which are slim to bugger-all).LOL Despite almost needing a microscope to install,once applied,they work great.

I have learned that lesson the hard way and now for all my gun and bow repairs all of my metal components go right into a magnetic dish makes my life a lot easier..........I will have to better examine the hammer extension and the hammer itself on my BLR tonight when I get home.

For one that is not tapped.....would fellow owners suggest purchasing a clamp on aftermarket extension like the uncle mikes one that was posted???

Personally, I had a 2x7x30 Bushnell 3200 on mine. Not I said "Had". I missed a big buck a couple of years ago and that was the last time it saw glass. I put a Williams peep on it.

If you are Not dogging and you are sitting in a stand, a 2x7x30ish is fine for the distances you plan on shooting. If you are dogging at all, loose the glass and go with peeps.

I am looking at putting a decent scope on this gun but not lookin to break the bank of course either so lookin to spend up to 300.00 for a decent scope.

I have the same rifle (Model 81 in .308) I have a Redfield Low Pro Widefield in straight 4 power mounted in Leupold rings and base. I use this for the same as you...........out to 150-200 yds. Works for me. Cheers....................Boog

You won't go wrong with the Leupold 2-7 .... also nice (even though you probably won't need it ) LIFETIME GUARANTEE (don't know if it my lifetime or the scope's lifetime ?....)

OK so....burris fullfield ii deal fell through so I have narrowed down my scope search i think to either a redfield revolution 2x7x33 or bushnell elite 3200 2x7x33................which would you choose both are lookin like slightly used and around same price of 175.00 is that a good deal???? thanks

i like the rainguard of the elite ...have 2 others currently....but the eye relief on the redfield is a little better and i dont see a difference between the revolution and the vx1 leupold........also going to be mounted on leupold std rings and bases.
