Beagles are my favourite people..
-
They are a lovely addition to any family. And most will earn their keep. Wouldn't be without one...

nice pics thanks for sharing

Really nice pics.
Almost have to agree with "beagles are my favourite" although I have loved setters and JRTs :)
-
I can't imagine not having a merry little hound with floppy ears and a white-tipped tail :)

That's a great pic. So hard to lose them.
For the first time to day my 14 year old setter stayed with me and didn't roam the woods. Hard to handle- so to go off topic.)

We have 4 labs right now but if my husband said he wanted a beagle or even a beagle hound cross I would say go get one. I sure miss the old girl we had. When you opened the door in the morning she started to tongue as soon as her feet hit the walkway. The pics are great. The rabbits are back on our property too.

I only had mine for 5 years and he developed a condition( Glaucoma) that we were only able to treat with medication for a year before it was uncontrollable and caused pain. Loved that little guy. We didn't run cottontails much though, mostly Hare. He was a 15" male. When we were in college we hare hunted from beginning to end of the season.

Great to see a beagle in good shape.deb

Thanks, he is in excellent condition, a very athletic beagle...intelligent too.
We hunted over him for 9 hours yesterday and he still wanted more.

My first beagle died of a heart attack running a deer. If it wasn't for the tracking collar on him I'd have never found him. He was truly an unbelievable little hound. When a deer was shot in front of him and was down he'd be the first one there and get right up on it's back and wouldn't let another dog near it no matter how big it was.
I'm afraid the little female I have now will eventually go the same way, not chasing deer although she will, but put her in a cedar swamp and she'll run non stop for 4 - 5 hrs before you can catch her, cause she won't come in to a whistle when running. You literally have to lie in wait and ambush her when she gets close. There's just no quit in her...She'll be 5 this April.

Mine can't be called off a track either. What I do is I fire a shot, most times this breaks his concentration and he comes toward me to see the dead rabbit. This works most of the time but I do not overuse it.
-
There's an old saying that goes something like, "A beagle that you can call off a track, ain't worth calling!". I wouldn't go that far, and it sure would be nice if they had a built-in auto shut-off, say after 1 hour. :)
I've just picked up a tracking system for my 5-year old female. She just won't stop...

I have been around a bunch of beagles, some of which were CKC field champions and I never seen one you could call off a line. Basically try and cut them off and hope for the best. Make sure everybody has a good lead with multi connectors to walk them back or they will get right back at it.

i could not imagine living with out a beagle in the house .I just love mornings like today when it warms up to just under 0 and fresh snow perfect weather for the hounds to track in .makes for a great day in the woods .beagles also make good watch dogs ,my wife works night shift so she sleeps all day and that little hound lets everybody know if anyone comes anywere near are property ,Dutch

I can call mine off a track - but she has to be able to see me for me to do it. You can only teach them that if you are willing to chuck your rifle and run them down if they don't stop. Not sure I'd use an e-collar for that sort of training.

I have spoken with several beaglers in the maritimes who have trained their hounds to recall using the tone signal on the alpha units.

There was a fellow lived in Cambridge [Galt] that raised and trained beagles sadly he has passed away , [Horace Halstead] he trained his beagles right from small puppies to respond to a hunters horn [cattle horn]. He used to run his dogs just down the road from us in an Reforestation Area, he would just turn them out from his vehicle sometimes up to 6 dogs and he would just sit by his vehicle and listen to them run.
When he was ready to go home he would just blow on the old horn and they would all come back to the truck where he would crate them and head home , he didn't kill any bunnies , just liked to hear his dogs run.
I had seen this many times as I would often stop by and chat with him, , those dogs of his sure did respond to the horn

I agree. Beagles are the greatest asset to small game hunters.. iv been at it for 20 years. And i couldnt see myself without them! I have a problem! The ban on garmin trackin collars. We as houndsman need to ban together and have our federation help us on gettin the gov. to see that our canadian dogs are just as important to us as the american dogs are to thier handlers! They technology is here. Let us use it..pls.
-
Most Canadian dog handlers just use them anyway. Call it civil disobedience?
-
I have three and it's getting harder to call them when they are on the line but ok when they lost the track.
The reason is I used to use an e collar which I don't now.
I also used to run them independently without the others barking in the kennel.
They still are quiet when one is running but slip out barking at kennel sometimes which never happened with the e collar.
I may have to go back using the e collar again. They just have to be reminded once in a while and they are then trained to the whistle again.
Most of the time they come running when I whistle when I time it right if I know they lost the track. They come to me thinking I have the track which I do sometimes(fresh snow helps). The trick is not to kennel them every time they come but show them the track every now and then.
So when it's time to go to kennel I just wait for the opportunity and fool them with the whistle but this time I catch them.
This pass week I have run them 4 consecutive days as soon as temp is higher than -10C.
They had very good runs we quit after about 2-4 hours each time. There doesn't seem to be too many bunnies at my place nowadays so I try to restrain them so not to overexert pressure on the bunnies.
I don't shot any except when the neighbors start to complain of over abundance of them.
My beagles are not perfect but I'm really enjoying them as individuals right now as each one seems to have their day.
Yesterday The mom was always first on the check and that didn't happen a lot as she is into details, however the conditions was in her favor somehow.
This is when you enjoy these dogs to the fullest when you start seeing the individual characteristics that make them shine sometimes.
CHEERS to all who enjoy the chase....

Very enjoyable read.
"This is when you enjoy these dogs to the fullest when you start seeing the individual characteristics that make them shine sometimes." So true . You need both - a dog that is quick to be first on the check , and one that has the experience to consider the possible details - big jump or rabbit has back- tracked.

I like your thinking! But i hear they r gonna cut the signals.. im hopin someone comes up with something to help us out.. sooner then later..
Happy running..
