We need to lighten up around here so here goes:
What do you consider your "best" piece of equipment for hunting? Doesn't matter if it's worth 2 bucks or $2K, what do you never want to be without when you head out?
May sound predictable but I tend to always have my leatherman Wave on me when hunting. I could gut a deer if needed or pull porcupine quills out of my buddy's nose with it. It also has a small saw that has cut so many limbs and pelvic bones I can't remember how many.
My Trek Sled in the winter....and my 870 for bird hunting in fall (the 870 I swap out 23" turkey used for grouse and rabbit, and put 28" for duck and goose).
I'm with you on the Leatherman Wave. But really, isn't the most important piece of gear your good old boots?
My favourite recent discovery is Buff "tubular headwear," which is great when it starts to get a little chilly. Keeps the cold air off my neck without overheating.
I have to say...what brings me the most enjoyment now when I'm out hunting is my E-Book kindle reader. I can now sit for 5-6 hrs and enjoy reading a good book while in a stand or pop-up. I used to fidget, get bored and fall asleep a lot. Now the 'book' keeps me awake and give me something to do with my hands. I believe it has greatly helped make me be a more successful hunter.
My favorites are my guns, all of them. But if you are asking about that extra piece of equipment that make things better, I'd say my GPS and compass (without them I'm lost.....).
if i had to pick just one prob my bog pod shooting sticks....nice for a steady shot but also just for resting the firearm or xbox on while waiting so its still at the ready
For me it's my toilet paper:) you never know when you have to go in the woods!

The tp is good. Socks and touque are a good idea. But I luv my long under wear!!:moose:

Got to be the four wheeler. Dogs cover too much ground to try and stay up with them on foot especially when they are free cast.
In -15 and below lately and with all the walking, my boots and wool socks.
Been thinking about this one. I gotta say my boots, bought a pair of Danner Canadians 15 years ago and they have hiked many miles and climbed many trees but they just started to leak and are not as warm as they used to be. I will replace them with anothe pair this spring before turkey season. Although I may need to hide them in the drop ceiling.
Other than the essentials like rifle and ammo and warm clothing I would say it's my backpack. Because I can carry everything I need (toilet paper, spare socks, firestarter, thermos of tea, granola bars, space blanket, compass etc, etc). If I ever got lost or injured in the bush I could live comfortably off the "stuff" I've got in my backpack for several days.
There are so many things that I never want to be without, including leatherman, GPS, buff, etc but by far the thing that has made the biggest difference is good boots. About 10 years ago I got my first pair of high quality boots .... wow, what a difference. I can hike for 10 hours with no foot issues at all. I have now worn out three pairs of these boots :-)
Cabelas 4-1 waterfowl Parka, absolutely the best.
Years ago a member of "the camp" realized that when we finally got to where we were going (1/2 hr road trip to crown land), all he had for footwear was the pair of slippers on his feet. There was 3 or 4" of fresh snow on the ground that morning too. Well, the other dozen or so of us weren't waiting for him to go back and get his boots so he hunted in his slippers. Must have been a long, cold stand for him. This was one of those spots that takes the dog man a good three or four hours to push. Anyway, he still had all his toes at the end of the day.Quote:

So many things that in time you whittle down to what you really like...good boots, your rifle, vest, knife, fanny pack, gloves, etc.
The piece of equipment I use so often when dogging or bird hunting is my pin-on compass. Hands free, just take quite glance down and you know your direction.
I know it's not a piece of equipment, but i love hunting with a dog....particularly my dog!
I do a lot of colder weather bow hunting so I spent a little more on a warm browning hunting suit. The suit combined with thermacell foot warmers are my favourite equipment to keep me comfortable during those brisk mornings.
Blackberry. So I can maintain the façade of being at work, and take selfies of me in snowstorms wearing an orange hat.
My climber. Best money I've ever spent. This season I likely sat in 25 different trees that I've never been in. Being able to climb in different locations has been huge to keeping my fixed stand sites from getting burnt out.
I have so many good items to talk about but I am going to say my thermacell ,there is nothing that comes close to saving a hunt in late spring for turkeys or early fall hunts for bear and deer ,the thermacell just works and it works well .good boots and coats are a must ,a hat and gloves are also at the top of the cold weather gear .but to make or break a hunt the thermacell is it ,Dutch
First thought was shotgun, second was boots. Then considered most important versus favourite versus best. Alround, my waves are handy but for hunting (and for me that's primarily grouse) it's this:

I like lightweight hiking shoes and I wear Gaiters over them. I can not walk in heavy stiff boots.
Never seen a multitool with a choke wrench and gut hook. Who makes that and where did you buy IT?Quote:

My first thought was my Leatherman also but on reflection I would have to say my Woolrich wool shirt. It's a heavyweight wool that they don't make anymore. That thing has kept me warm on more hunts than I can remember. It's tough too! I've worn it for most of my deer and turkey hunting for twenty years! Mind you I'm careful when I wash it and just hang it to dry. If they started making them again I would honestly pay $100 for one. TC
I would have to say that my favorite piece of hunting gear is my new Irish Setter Rutmaster boots. They are amazing!

Probably my muck woodymax boots, nice a comfy, or my underarmour 3.0 base layer! Sweating in anything less then -10 but above that and you're nice and toasty
Gotta be good boots and high-end hunting socks.
Right now the best combo seems to be my Columbia omni-heat bugaboots & Redhead heavyweight socks.
Super warm, very comfortable. Almost nice enough to welcome hours of sitting still in a freezing stand. lol
Not sure i can use the boots for spring turkey... they're just too damn warm.

I have been reading some of this thread and got thinking all fall winter and spring I wear lined blues jeans thy have a wool lining in them .I have then in blues camo and tan , ,I watch for them to come on sale at giant tiger ,I got my good hunting paints at TSE ,thy are tan brush paints with a good lining ,I just love them ,Dutch
