Fur garments

I have a few questions for everyone here ?

Would you you consider buying good quality real wild fur hats and mitts if you could get easier access to them ? Would you have a price point for these garments that would make or break the deal ?

Would you buy them for your kids ? And lastly in your circle of friends does anyone wear fur ?

Im working on a few things currently and I know we have a very diverse group of people on this forum from many different walks of life and I'd like to get some feedback

I would buy it. Don't have a problem with the entire concept. I do prefer to make my own. I have started a hat and mitts. Got friends who want to make a coyote cloak. I know line52 wants three yotes this year to make some garments. I don't have a problem with fur. I like the trimmed ones as well though.

I have a beaver hat and a set of mits. My buddy trapped the beavers so they have more value than if I just bought them. I don't even remember how much it cost to have them made but it wasn't cheap. Our whole ice fishing gang all wear the same hats and mits that are made by a lady in North Bay. Nothing warmer than beaver skin garments.
As to your question, I would think if you advertised here you would have no trouble selling fur products. Most of my buddies have at least one fur hat.

i see beaver mitts on kijiji up here every so ofton, probably from the same person terry mentioned, think they sell for around $150...

I lived at Kingfisher Lake FN for a year - 250 km north of Pickle Lake. While there I purchased numerous fur products made by the wives of some the old-timers. Picked up a beaver hat mated to a home tanned (traditional brain paste method) moose hide. Also picked up home tanned moose (lined with polyester) gauntlet style mitts and and a similar pair of gloves. Gauntlets were trimmed with snowshoe hare fur and embroidered with bead work depicting an eagle on each forearm and my name on the cuffs. Also picked up a muskrat hat but it was commercial tanned but still very nice.

Don't get to use them very much because as Terry said they are very warm and unless it's -20 or colder I overheat.

With respect to buying as gifts for kids or other family - I bought all of them home tan fur cuffed moccasins and a a few additional hats as well as gifts.

In my current circle the only people I know that wear fur probably don't even realize it. It is coyote on the rim of their Canada Goose parka hoods.

Matt, you'd save me a ton of time and about 4 full wasted pelts if ur sellin' em. I'll pm ya some sizes and we'll go from there. I win/you win. My only request is I want the full skull cap and tail to cover my neck.......

Just trying to figure out how to justify the price to the wife on the boots, but alot of items I wear have down, fur or leather.

Manitoba Muclucs are a hot item right now with the GTA crowd after seeing them on a morning fashion show. The host made a big thing about the "Canadian content", even though the small print says "made in China".
There is a reserve on the north side of Rice Lake where they are also made by hand however......for about half the price.:eek:

I've ordered a pair of coyote mitts for my wife. They came from Wisconsin. Saw the adds on predator quest (not sure).

Yes they are to match the hood on her goose jacket.

I would love some beaver mitts at some point. Also really keen on getting a beaver blanket, just alot of coin for a trimmed

I would buy fur garments, so long as I know where the fur comes from. I'd have no problem buying from a local hunter/trapper. I lack the resources to do it myself, but I would gladly pay someone to process the pelt of an animal I hunted myself. I regret not buying anything when I was in Iqaluit last summer. I would buy garments for family and friends. I don't know what price point I'd be comfortable with though, just because I can't fathom what kind of markup there would be compared to what I saw in the NWT and Nunavut.

Slightly off topic, but I'm also a fan of muskox wool garments.

Well, of course I wear a fur hat if the weather calls for it. My wife has one, which she rarely wears, and so do some friends. The only women I see in the city wearing fur are all of the same ethnic group and about the same age.
One of the things, I became cautious of is recycled/old material and obviously poor craftsmanship. I have no problem with cottage-industry manufacturing, but I lost contact with my previous fur-tailor since he past down his business and have not found a replacement(not really looked for either). The stuff I bought lately was of moderate quality, and I was shocked how much a friend paid for a fur hat lately at a big store.

I am interested as well as I would love some locally procured and made fur products but as far as pricepoint I am not sure where to start. Say a well made beaver hat between 225 to 275 may be reasonable or mitts from beaver, muskrat, or coyote around 150 to 200.. I would love to see some pics of the fur garments you guys have ,especially the gauntlets you described Species.

I have a beaver police style hat I bought on the Internet....same site as mentioned earlier on Preditor Quest. It's the warmest hat I've ever had. Sure beats our old issued winter fake fur hats !!!

Beaver hats are incredibly warm. Only wear mine when ice fishing and even then you can actually sweat in them.

Got a coon skin hat complete with the tail. It's too hot even on the coldest days if you are doing anything other than sitting around.
Great for late season deer sitting in a stand though.

Actually, the hunter orange regulations made me more than once to choose an (orange) fleece tuque over my (preferred) fur hat. Rules aside, there are some places where I don't want to be mistaken for a fury creature...

Yup... fur hat for me, wife and boy. Fur gloves for the wife. I expect that somewhere between $50-$75 is a good start point.

I need a pair of new mittens; warm and low cost; i.e. not going to go to town with them...
I used to have a pair of mittens that were just the fur inside/meat side outside (chemically tanned) and stitched together (over the wall). Looked terrible, were warm, super affordable and totally eco-friendly ;-)
Anyone know who would sell something like that?

I ice fished at Fort Francis with a fellow that had a pair of polar bear mitts that went up to his elbow.....those were a great pair of mitts !!

I would, I actually made a pair of mitts back when I was about 12 that hat rabbit fur inside, softest mitts every.

The problem is that guys like you get nothing for it and we have to pay to the nines for it. I would support the industry but the costs at this point in time are insane. I am still trying to find a way of getting seal meat but I guess there is no importing to Ontario unless you are a high end restaurant.

I've always been interested in a beaver hat for when out in the bush, but like others, would rather know where it came from.

No need for orange while bow hunting and I don't know anyone that would wear orange while doing so...... Fur hat is the way to go.

I would but we live in Hamilton and I am really concerned with how the 20-somethings going to college and university will judge me and my evil ways. I don't think my self-esteem can handle what someone who I really have no connection with thinks of me. All kidding aside, I would definitely purchase quality fur and leather products to cloth my family in. In fact, my aunt made a pair of slippers for my son out of deer hide and rabbit fur trim when he came into the world and is currently making my daughter a pair of slippers from deer hide and coyote fur trim.

The same Aunt has numerous fur coats which she wears off and on. In fact, we were at a place recently for the kids which allowed them to pet a Chinchilla. There was a remark from my wife in the truck on the way home about how soft and comfortable a coat made from them would be.

Been trying all season to get four rabbits.. I want to make some mitts...

LOVE fur! I have fur hats, mitts, a seal skin/fur vest and more. Also have a couple of pelts to make more. Fur is the best for warmth in my opinion. I would purchase for my kids too if there was a way to keep them from losing them i.e. loop of string for mitts to go through the jacket sleeves.

just a heads up for anybody that may want rabbit furs or meat i am raising meat rabbits... dont have any for sale at the moment, but another 6-8 weeks and i should... will make great furs...

never minded a fur hat on a beaver...

I know MikePal raises rabbits, I will be come spring.

Dad used to have 100 rabbits when he was in his teens, he is retired now and seems keen on my upcoming rabbits, too bad he lives too far away.

I would definately buy for myself kids and wife, we all would love to be wearing fur but the only place i have seen it for sale is online and i dont trust it.

Yes, probably, but I would also expect the garment to last at least decade with care, so higher price is expected.

Probably, but it doesn't come up. I am less likely to grab someone's clothes to see if it is real - that is my wife's job :p.

I've been eyeing up the seal skin clothing at Nature Boutique, and would prefer warm fur garments, or at least in helpful trim areas, if the price was right.

I don't think I'd be looking at fox stoles or the like - not opposed, just not my bag (also not for me, but for my wife) ((seriously)).

I know it is a bit weird, but I don't like those monster sized fur hats, sometimes complete with giant ear flaps. I understand they may be warm, but I don't have any interest in wearing a whole beaver on my head.

I have not purchased any fur garments online, but I did buy a caribou hide rug/throw for my wife's birthday. Shipped in two days and is in excellent shape/colour. It covers her knitting chair, and is very warm while sitting on it.
