TIMMINS - When Stephane Gaudette sat down to breakfast with his kids, he had no idea he would be serving up a sad artifact of London’s industrial history.
Gaudette, a high school teacher from Timmins, opened a box of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes and found the inner bag had a message noting it was the “very last bag of Canadian cereal for the Canadian market from Kellogg's London Ontario plant.”
Three Kellogg workers, all with more than 20 years of experience, signed the message dated Dec. 5, 2014.
The cereal plant shut down for good on Dec. 21 after 107 years. The closure put more than 500 people out of work. Kellogg has another plant in Belleville, Ont., but the production from the London plant was shifted to the U.S.
The London plant made about 27 cereals, including Corn Flakes, Frosted Flakes, Special K and Rice Krispies.
