Ontario gov't looking at taxing Youtube and Netflix

Kevin Finnerty, Assistant Deputy Minister for Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, testified on behalf of the government, saying:

In order to create a more level playing field, the ministry recommends decreasing this regulatory imbalance. The ministry believes the best way to accomplish this is to expand the regulation of new media TV, rather than by lightening the current regulation of traditional TV.”



In other words, let's have people pay taxes on "new media" too.

Yet according to documents obtained under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and reported here for the first time, Ontario government officials spent months developing a submission in support of a Netflix tax.

It's not a tax........It's a revenue generating tool silly

These provincial dipshytes can spew all the garbage they like,but,all things broadcasting fall under the authority of the federal government. The province would be slapped silly if they ever crossed that boundary.

My thought too.
If someones going to make a buck of this - not saying it won't happen - it would be the feds, not the province.

In the buildup to an election, no government is going to tax the Internet.

The Prov Libs already get to tax internet providers & certain services.

So no, they won't directly tax the internet or particular media companies like Netflix... but they'll very likely find some way to boost tax revenues through increased internet services costs, targeted at different types/scopes of data plans, etc.
It's not hard to look at someone with a 10 GB/month internet plan and see that they're just browsing the web and using facebook and email, vs someone with a 300GB-Unlim GB plan who is obviously using it for downloading and streaming videos.

For anyone who pirate downloads stuff, be aware that there's also an idea being floated around by the Federal gov't that would see a massive federal fee pinned onto any fines laid against you if you're charged and found guilty under the new piracy laws.

It's the way of the future folks... taxing intangibles and pixels and other "pretend" items.

That might just get the twitters and facebookers and Tumblers and other addicts to revolt and actually vote against the party who wants to dig in their pockets. Pretty large demographic that usually don't vote. Harper is smarter than that. As already mentioned above we pay sales tax on our monthly packages and purchase of devices used.

I might suggest;

A tax on Netflix, data useage etc would be far less an issue for those in the GTA/Ottawa, than outside it. For starters, they have far more access to entertainment be it movie theatres, shows, entertainment districts, cultural things, sporting events and far more. In short, likely far less "reliant" on it for filling in the those nights/evenings in front of a tv.

Secondly, when it comes to data useage, it's not "that" often I don't have wifi be it at work, at Tims, at many places. For those outside???

Thirdly, those in cities um, tend to live a little more comfortably.

Fact is, despite knowing (or should have known) that electing the Liberals would result in large tax grabs.. sorry revenue tools.. to pay for their mistakes, soaring hydro, bungling many other things, and um...vote buying....They fell hand over fist for them. Do you really think an extra few bucks a month will register?

Alright guys, I'll pay the extra 1.04$ for Netflix if that make them happy.....

Taxing pay sites like netflix with a tax like gst or pst would be possible. My question is, how in the world could you possibly tax free websites like YouTube, et al?

That won't make them happy, they'll just move onto the next lie to steal more money from us. I'm sorry, but I'm sick of it.

I just did my tax return and got nailed because of Ontario SURTAX. SURTAX - just call it a normal tax, that's what it is, and everyone is paying it (if your taxes are over $4300, which I assume all of yours are). The surtax brings the maximum tax bracket in Ontario to almost 50%!!!!

Then what tax is hidden in gas, how much penalty (tax) do we pay in hydro due to wasted money ($1 bill let's not forget). I haven't done the math, but I'm sure we are paying like 60% tax on average, when you sum everything up. In 20 years from now, what will it be? 80%? Everyone will just say screw it, and stop working. What's the point - you break your back working and then it all gets taken away and use by others??

Liberals will cause an economic collapse in this province if they are in power. They will simply tax us to death and kill any strong work spirit. You get rewarded for not trying. You get penalized for doing the right things and contributing to society. It's all backwards.

You seem a little bit bitter?

We now pay more in tax than housing food and clothing so now the problems start were on the eve of destruction

......... one of the main reasons why i try to stop reading the toronto sun or the star because of the new rumors about taxes from wynne govt.... now it just made me sicker to stomach this crap. I couldn't care less.. I am moving out this hell-hole ontario.

I'm getting tired of all the B.S going on in Ontario it's only getting worse.
