hmmmmm..........forget the pointer seems picking up a receiver may be the ticket.
bout time lol!
Must be Southern Maine.....:shy:
southern slopes have plenty of bare ground and it looks like time.
Zee older dog was not moving on the GPS today for a few minutes, I tried to scramble to her, but the younger dog got there first, so quite possibly she was pointing a wc.
We are losing snow depth very fast my way. Crusts have melted away and snow is now soaked and dropping.
Have only seen reports of recent sightings as far north as Altoona Pennsylvania hoping to hear about the first Ontario sighting on here soon
Seen robins, so woodcock are possible.
Dick
Well you will see them a week or two before we do North of GTA
Spent 2 Hours today searching but didn't see any sign. No points. The again next week. Area was near London.
Just got back from a run. No encounters but very little exposed ground still.
They are coming. This is from Minnesota this week:

Well look what I found today March 15. It didn't want to fly away it just fluttered a few feet then sat down. Good to see.
South of Sarnia 20 mins. Not too far from a small town called Brigden. I was taking some material back into the bush working on my tree stand platform and it was on the trail I plowed the snow from a few weeks back and now it's dirt so I figured it was searching for something to eat amongst the leaves and logs that I exsposed.
I saw a bunch of Robins today in London, the woodcock are usually here the same time as them.
No robins or woodcock here yet. Just yucky snow
I hit a few spots yesterday towards the long point area and snow depth is still very deep and ground is flooded. Be a few more weeks I think for any good woodcock finds. So pigeons it is for some early training I guess.
I think they are close, saw some of the woodcock on the map provided above are in Ohio Wisconsin and Northern Pennsylvania, also one spotted by Lake Ontario in Peel
Get ready
Saw my first woodcock for this Spring down along the Thames to day.
None North of the GTA yet then
Heard they have headed back south to Louisiana in disgust.
So far this spring there have been 4 field trials and 2 championships (all grouse & woodcock trials) cancelled due to Old Man Winter's grip on us
I'm breaking up with winter summer is hotter and I think we should start to see other seasons
My daughter had the britt out in the forest on leash yesterday. The dog went on hard point and eventually, my daughter was able to see the woodcock - 45 min. north of barrie - still a foot of snow in the bush. Get out there people...they're back. :)
Could you tell me if these at Gladwin have been cancelled? I thought I'd make a visit this year but if ......................
April 2,3,4 MI Amateur FT Club
April 11,12 Ruffed Grouse FT Club
April 13-16 Lake States Field trial Club
April 17-19 Beaverton Grouse Dog Club
No cancellations yet.
The person to contact is Chris Dimattio. [email protected]
Thank you.
Reports from Gladwin look like nothing will be cancelled or moved this year.
Had the dog out this morning, she found two woodcock a little west of London. Birds seemed tired as they only flew a very short distance, must be burned out from the migration.
Checked a small piece of cover this morning. 30 mins east of London. Nothing to report. Will try again this weekend.
Was out in Caledon this weekend for two hours and no woodcock but she is a young pup
with the arrival of grackles in the back yard would expect to find woodcock starting too show up here. Pup way too young but just may go kick around the bush lot. Not much fun without the dog but that twittering flush just too addictive to miss.
Ran the dog for a couple hours on Sunday, put up 2 woodcock together down near Windsor area.
Will check again in a week.
Found one woodcock in South London yesterday. Tired bird.
Hearing them in the field behind our house, in town, in Belleville about 20 minutes ago. No mistaking that call.
Any harm (to the bird, or the dog's training), to let my young pup (5 months) run around the field a bit, to see if he stirs anything up?
Had the dogs out today. Seen 1 woodcock in London.
None at my second favourite spot to day. The aspens are getting older so that may be why.
I don't know what's going on. I haven't found a single bird.
In all fairness it goes below -10 two days in row. But the ground looks ok for wc to be there... may it's just too cold.
Trouble is when they finally come they will likely fly through quickly and I won't have as much time on wc for the pup, as I hoped for :(
Ran the dog today and found nothing. The ground has cleared up big time so snow is no longer an issue around here. Got into deer and had to leave the area.
40 min. north of Barrie - the britt bumped one woodcock at our favourite spring haunt. Puddles iced over, 95% snow cover still in the bush. Why do they always fly straight over your head when the season isn't open?
11 woodcock in Niagara yesterday after the rain. Southwest facing edge cover seemed to be the key.

A beautiful point on a solitary bird today north of Barrie. Clearly the bulk of the birds are still south.
My daughter had the bitt out for a half hour run this afternoon and got 3 perfect points on 4 woodcock. Everyone enjoy your long weekend!!!!
Multiple woodcock finds Friday and today in the London area, looks like the main flight is in around here.
I am almost sure the pup bumped 2 birds today. finally! What a spring.
Just got back from a walk with the pup bumped 3 birds. 2 small ones the other a big heavy one. This week been out every day to work on the pups bush legs first day multiple flushes. Flighty birds so pup hasn't made first contact yet but at 3 months happy she's just tromping bushes. This week should be golden.
Got out this morning hoping the snow would make the skittish birds sit a bit longer so the pup could bump her first bird. Too no avail the birds still flush way too far to catch the dogs attention. Managed to see 3 today. Hoping the weather forecast for this week is wrong as a week of rain would suck right now.
found one today, it ran from the dog for a while.
Got out for a bit after work managed to find 2. Finally was able to get the pup to bump a woodcock. The look on her face was priceless when that took off.
Great looking dog
quiet here, am I the only one looking for the little buggers?
The best day today so far, had at least 10 flushes, some of them repeats, 5-6 birds for sure.
Someone asked me about the habitat, here what it looked like today

We haven't run into a flock this spring. We're consistantly running into one or two at a time on short outtings. Getting some beautiful points though. Yesterday, in a fairly stiff breeze another pair of dog walkers forced me to call her in and by the time we were alone again, we had to work our little spot with the wind behind us. I'll be damned if the britt didn't get a perfect point on a bird that was 8 feet down wind from her. How can she do that???
Bird may have walked a bit however 8 feet isn't that far for a brit's nose. Always believe they sat solid until watched one tip toeing around the dog. They can be sneaky at times.
Haven't found any yet in Caledon but will be out again tomorrow
Two skittish woodcock today in Peel... Finally
Flushed one today
Flushed 2 today near Orillia.
Put only 1 up today down towards Windsor area, flew long and strong.
Was out for a couple hours and would have thought we'd run into a handful..
2 woodcock and an ESG yesterday. 4 woodcock today.
Not the greatest pic, but it's tough to get a pic of them on the move. This bird is from last week in London. Pointed by a Weimaraner.

The woods in Michigan were full of woodcock this past week end. Don't they move through ON eventually or do they stay there?
One took off this morning while walking my dog, in Muskoka.
3 woodcock and a mostly changed snowshoe yesterday. :)
Mark you are having a good spring
The dog found one today. In Callander (south shore).
Just when I thought that they where gone found 2 today. After not finding any the last couple times out went to another spot that usually holds a few. After stomping at the spots that previously held didn't move a thing. Took a short cut across the field when the pup got a bit birdy ( okay maybe and over description, curious would be a better description) when a woodcock flush from under a shrub. Bit more looking around the open field produced another bird under a hydro tower. Nice to see them just odd to find them out in the open.
FFF
I also found two after leaving the bush on my way out in an open field, both within 15 yards of a single shrub.
Both flushed very quickly as dog was locating them
The ground they flushed from had thick grass so not sure how they get to the worms
Flushed one down around Leamington, this past Friday.
I saw 1 last Sun' just south of Lake St. Peter on the old railbed during my Ranger ride.
