I have a hummingbird 597 Ci and was going to get navionics for this season.I am not sure if I need premium or platinum and what is the difference.
Just looking for contour maps for the inland lakes.
Any heads up or other ideas would be great.

Hot Maps Canada Gold is the inland lakes chip. Platinum is for the Great Lakes chips higher detail and more inclusive version.
I have the 688ci HD DI Combo (4 yrs old, slightly different version) and bought the Navonics Gold Edition Maps. When I bought it at radioworld.ca, the maps were half price as a bundle. Total cost was $795.00, shipped over night and installed by dealer before we picked up the new boat. Nothing but good things to say about these maps, full GPS, with charts, insert waypoints, bread crumbing, spot marking, click local attractions, marinas. The GPS is so accurate as I pass a red channel marker on the St Lawrence, or Rideau River, it shows me passing and if the buoy is red or green. I am Ottawa, and bought the eastern Canada maps (I think that is the coverage), works near Peterborough, Kingston, and Ottawa River. Not disappointed at all and neither will you. The hardest part about set was figuring out how to take the GPS of Demo mod and display external map source (I.E. get it to recognize the navonics maps, once the chip was inserted). Youtube is your best friend for that.
At the time, I compared prices all over Ottawa and the Boat show, and Radioworld.ca was best price. Also, last year, I forgot to stow the back anchor line when backing of marina, the rope caught in the prop, pulled it tight and ripped off the transducer clean. I called radio world (10AM), (4 yrs after purchase) they found my order and shipped me a new cable and tranducer overnight for $108.00 all in. Got it the next day, and installed myself once I pulled the boat out. Great Service!!!!

Hot maps is for inland lakes. Navionics gold and platinum are great lakes. So it depends on what area your gonna be fishing. I'm in the same line of thought. I live on Erie but I'm thinking of getting hotmaps for inland lakes I don't visit very often or have yet to explore
Our lake, Graham Lake (North of Brockville) does not show on my charts. Less than 1.5KM long, but every other lake does. It is the only lake I have not found so far. On the St Lawerance, I see many high priced boats with no GPS, I truly don't understand why they don't have one. Over the last 5 yrs, I have towed more than one bowrider with the lower end ripped off from the rock shoals.
Best thing I've found... use their webapp (http://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en) to see if the lakes you want are even on the chip. Up in the Sudbury area, a huge number of lakes don't even have outlines. Penage, vermillion, ministic, fox, agnew... lake outline doesn't even show up on the maps.
why is it every time I look @ buying something electronic , I need to spend at least a couple hundred dollars more to get what I want.LOL
The 688 looks great but I am not ready to step up yet.
What is the difference from an SD card to a compact flash? I think my unit will only take the SD card.
I also found the hot maps preimium @ GPS central for $149. Good price just want to make sure it will work for me. The lakes I want are on it.
