Alcohol Related Incidents - Shut Er Down

I spent much of this past summer in Muskoka, pretty well every weekend actually. I did a lot of fishing, a lot of dirt biking and a lot of partying. One thing i never did was MIX those ! And if i ever did drink and go fishing i was never operating the craft and i never brought open containers with me. Now what seems to bother me is that people think its okay to slam down 12 beers and take their new seadoo for a rip across the lake between boats at wide open throttle.

Now i'm not a huge fan of drinking and driving, and i never will be. What i don't get is how i see it more often every long weekend, and constantly hear about people either injured or dead in alcohol related motor vehicle incidents. I understand having fun, believe me, i'm only 19 and still pi**ing in the sandbox compared to most people on here maturity wise, but i know everyone slips up every now and then, we're only human. I guess the rest of this isn't really going anywhere so i'll finish with this, Leave the damn keys inside, don't let your friends drink and boat/drive, stay off the water unless you're a passenger. I've yet to lose a friend or family member to a alcohol related accident, i'd love to keep it that way, and i'd love for us all to be safe on the water, the roads and the trails.

I don't understand how people can go out for a day trip hunting, fishing, boating, etc and not bring any alcohol. I went out to a local lake last weekend. A trio of young guys showed up in the afternoon and I see a case of cans chilling in the snow.

When I go out hunting or fishing, the booze stays home. 1) I am usually the driver, and 2) guns and booze don't mix.

If I am staying overnight somewhere, I have no problem with a few beers in the evening, if hunting, then AFTER the guns are secured.

Actually ,your post sounds more mature than many posts that appear on the forum. Welcome to the forum.

I don't drink as there are lots of alcoholics in my family genes for several generations. My Father was almost convicted of a DUI ( 1960s) but got off as his work required him to drive daily , and he had two sons in wheelchairs that needed to be driven to school. Scared him to death. To his credit , he never drank and drove again.

I have a friend who was hit by a drunk driver. She was a translator for the govt. Now she is in a wheelchair and remembers no languages- hardly knows her name.

Anyone caught drinking and driving should do a minimum of a year in jail and lose their license for life!!!!!!!!!!! Furthermore if they kill someone while drinking and driving they should be charged with murder and do LIFE in jail!

My brother was dumb enough to get a DUI, when he was 20. He still doesn't drive, but he learned his lesson! People make mistakes, but I think laws should be stiffer.

Let me start by saying I in no way support the idea of impaired driving.
Our laws are plenty tight perhaps getting a little overboard. Penalties should be stiffer for sure. I think a redo of our impaired laws is in order. I do not believe someone getting nabbed at .081 should get the same treatment as someone nailed for .12 or the similar. I have no personal experience with a DUI due to the fact I'm always the DD but have a friend and an old co-worker who both got charged weeks apart.

Friend- slammed down a couple beer and a mickey of tequila, hopped in his truck and rear ended a parked vehicle. Thankfully nobody was injured. This guy spent 90 days without his licence along side a careless charge and he was back on the road.

Co-worker - Drank half a beer (was there to witness) phone rang, had to go pick up his son. Was pulled over for no seatbelt shortly after leaving the driveway, was asked to blow. He blew over. A quick ride to the cop shoppe saw him blow .08 and he still lost his licence for the year and had to use the unaffordable to him blow box for a while after.

How does this seem fair considering they both had the same Judge?

Well I think you have a good point their! I don't think a first time offense should ruin anyone's life ( unless someone was hurt ). I also don't think after a beer or 2 one should be charged with DUI either.

I do think my brother got what he deserved, he was way over the limit when he was caught. He also learned his lesson, the first time around. I think we need some sort of system, were the penalties are stiffer the higher over you blow!

Water on the water....beer on the pier!!!!

To be honest I would like to see blood tests offered should one hit the limit on a roadside.

I also feel that one should be able to have a beer or glass of wine while out fishing. In this case once again a select few ruined it for the masses. Funny thing is..... even with the strict laws in place those same select few are still out there.

Your friend was lucky enough to get a lazy officer. A lot less paperwork to do up a MVA report and a 90 day suspension, than make an arrest for an impaired/ over 80 charge !!!!!

You got it Oaknut! I am old school as well....don't see what is wrong with having a drink on a hot day, but don't understand why people cannot take a six pack and bring five of them home. I also have heard of people with a half dozen DUI's who still drive.
i also know of an old guy who got a DUI about 15 years ago and learned his lesson. Last fall his son got his first deer so he went to assist at a buddies, having a few beers during the evening.
After it was over he headed out the driveway( about 1/2 km) and thought better of it so he stopped for a snooze.( He drives a truck and is always catching forty). An hour later the OPP knocked on his window as they noticed the vehicle in the moonlight. All this when he was only a mile from his house and didn't want to wake up his wife by calling for a ride home.....

The thing is everybodys body takes alcohol different, i could have 5 or 6 beers before i feel the good buzz where as other people could have 2 or 3. Either way, THE KEYS STAY HUNG UP. Dui's are a terrible thing, i cant afford to get one due to my job and unless you work from home neither can you. I had heard a story from my best friend Jakes father, one night back when he was in his prime (Mid to late 70's i'm assuming) he was driving his friend home from a party, after several beers, admitting he was probably impaired, and he got pulled over a few clicks from his home. The police new he and his friend had been drinking, so what did they do? They towed his car and made them walk home. Ha! what a thought ! That would make me never want to drink again, especially since it was in the damn winter. I remember back home the scariest thing a police officer would do is tell my dad!

guys a few examples, we are on a lake just around the Havelock area and basically on any given day you can espect to see an OPP boat on the lake, what I mean by that if you want to drink and drive on our lake your playing Russian Roulette, I would say 15 years ago if 50 boats where on the lake 45 probably had booze on them today those same 50 boats, maybe 5 have booze on them the OPP Program is working and sure it will continue to.........losing your license driving a boat is costly......my case my job.

A tally he was charged for over 80. He just beat it in court out of sheer bs I guess. There's no way in hell he should've walked.

Lazy cop did all that paperwork for an over 80 and the court gives him a careless!!!!! Lucky guy to get a lenient judge especially with an accident connected to it. If he hit my car i wouldn't be happy with that outcome.

Now to me. I don't drink and drive and don't get in the car with people that do. I had an experience when I was about 19yrs and it kept me from ever considering it. It's detailed below. I'm no saint and I do drink in a boat if the driver is not going to. Same thing goes for sleds and Atv. I will walk out to my lake with a drink and drill a hole. what I bring comes home with me (can bottle). I guess an offense is an offense when it comes to having beers in the boat. I don't cross that criminal dui line. Not saying it's right.

Buddy of mine (Dion Nelson) was slammed by drunk driver who left a golf tournament years ago on Innisfil Beach Road. When police and fire showed up the drunk was gathering things that flew out of his convertible. Another couple that stopped held his girlfriends (Crystla) head up so she could breath as her neck snapped and her head was resting on her chest. I feel for what that couple had to see and for what they did. My buddy and his girlfriend were airlifted to Toronto. The girl died shortly after arriving at the hospital. My buddy lived but was never the same. The guy on a plea got 18 months prison. No justice in my opinion.

A few years later my buddy died from a seizure. The seizures he had were as a result of the accident. Obviously the a $$ didn't get any new charges.

The case you spoke of is where laws need to be set in stone. That guy should've went away for the maximum allowable term on a double homicide.
