What do you use against ticks?

We used Revolution last year, but it didn't appear to help much against ticks. Well, the dog never picked up a single tick in cottage country, but pretty much every second walk at a conservation area in the GTA. I don't know all that much about different types of ticks and their distribution in Ontario. Revolution is indicated against two types of ticks. So, either the dog picked up some other kind of tick or it doesn't really work all that great in the first place. To be fair, I haven't bothered trying to find out what type of ticks they actually were.
Anyway, I'm going to try something else this year...
What are you guys using (and why)? Have you seen a significant difference if you don't use it (with respect to ticks)?

K9 advantix II does it all and is waterproof. Started my springer about three weeks ago around the same time my new vet contacted me to start her on heartguard. I told her no thank you I have her started on K9 advantix II. She agreed and felt it covered everything off while working in the field.

k9 advantix II. Revolution does not protect against ticks.

Revolution works only against the dog tick, which does little good since the most common ticks seem to be wood ticks and deer ticks.

And it doesn't stop the tick from biting. It kills it after the bite.

Anything with permethrin (Vectra 3D, K9 Advantix, Liberty, etc) will repel fleas and ticks and prevent them from biting, but permethrin isn't safe around cats if you have one.

that's what I figured out (the hard way...)
last vet highly recommended revolution - although we originally asked for advantix. wasn't the only time we wasted money their...
what do vets in your area charge for the 6 month advantix2 treatment?

not that I have an issue with cats; my dog "repels" them naturally ...
I was also wondering how Frontline Plus or Certifect compare to Advantix2 with respect to ticks. similarly what last5oh stated, it sounds they would only kill, but don't repel ticks

We've been using 'Liberty 50' from TSC in the US for the past 8 yrs. Our dogs free range on the farm surrounded by hay fields and tall grass and we don't find any ticks on them once we start using it.

We just picked up the first doses for Apr, it comes in a box with a 3 month supply per dog for $14 ea. As Rick said, same active ingredient as Advantix at a fraction of the cost.

If you want something for yourself, stop by a Horse/Tack shop (maybe even TSC) and get something like Ultra Sheild that also has permethrin and spray it on your cloths. Can also be used on the dogs.

Frontline Plus ..... Have never had a problem with ticks on the dogs. And we travel throughout tick country training and attending trials. Need to find A Frontline Plus formula for me!! ;-)

That's unusual Vince as Heartguard kills immature heartworms. . Personally I wouldn't bypass Heartguard. 10/100 dogs got heartworm in 2014.................( I also use Advantix 2)

I keep her on K9 advantix II until November when mosquito season is hopefully over and start again March of this year. Winter months she gets a break from it. In the past with my large husky kennel of dogs set up in a cedar bush they would be treated with Ivomectin active ingredient in Heartguard.

Revolution and Advantage are the only topicals I'm aware of that that also cover heartworm protection, but they don't work for tick prevention.

K9 advantix II does work for tick prevention. I spend many early mornings in a tall grassy field beside my house doing training drills and have not had any ticks on my dog. My neighbor who has a pointer was covered in them last year and did not use any prevention on his dog. Even his wife and two kids were covered in ticks a few times last year.

I said Advantage YD. It's different stuff that doesn't have permethrin as far as I'm aware. I know advantix works as it has permethrin but I'm not sure if it has heartworm protection.

I'm sure you know that Revolution and Advan TAGE is only for fleas. Nothing there for mosquito , deer ticks or immature heartworms.

No, I didn't know the immature heartworms part. It was always my vets recommendation to just use Revolution as well, and I always figured Revolution covered it all. I guess not. I know it didn't work on ticks.

It says this on the Revolution site, so I'm assuming once a blood test confirms everything is OK, this still protects from heartworm. Although mosquito's can still bite I'm assuming Revolution will prevent worms from growing?

I use Advantix !! and HeartGaurd. My dog has never had a tick on since going to Advantix and we hunt a nasty area for them 3 times a week all season. Great stuff.

Shouldn't have immature heartworms if your using topical K9 advantix II. If they happen to slip by then it's possible other insects have also slipped by such as ticks, lice. On the other thread I indicated that I will use the K9 advantix II topical before the end of each month for 3 1/2 weeks as opposed to every 4 weeks as prescribed .

Certainly looks like it takes care of immature heartworms , too bad it doesn't handle deer ticks - ones that cause lyme disease.

Every spring, even if pooch did catch something, when the vet does a wellness check and blood work he/she will catch it then and treat it if need be.

Because my dog isn't in the bush as much as most here, I may just do the Heartguard this season. My vet recommended going that route, although I've always used some kind bug control in the past (Revolution for probably last 13 years, until I noticed it wasn't working two summers ago.) I'll tell ya though, the first time I find a tick I'll be getting whatever my vet has with permethrin.

Nexgard and Bravecto are two new products for this year. Oral chews given monthly and every 3 months respectively for flea and tick prevention, including deer/lyme ticks. Both will kill ticks that get on a dog within 24 hours, before they can transmit the Lyme bacteria. I'm not a big fan of the topical permethrin products for a "house" dog. I find they have a strong odour and leave an oily residue. Not something you want your kids hugging.

I agree that AdvantixII is messy but has worked great for us. Are you endorsing these 2 new products or just informing us they exist as I do value your opinion very much. What would you consider as the possible negatives of these new treatments?

Thanks for the reminder, I'm going in for the annual 'Wellness' testing and I wanted to ask about them after you mentioned them last year. Much better product from a handling /exposure perspective.

Yes, I'll look into those products as well. I guess the only con I can see is that they don't repel, but you can't have it all I guess.

I think I will stick with the K9 advantix II start early in the season and finish late in the season. I like that it repels the ticks rather than a tick clinging to the dog coming into my home and dyeing 24 hrs later that other new products offer. My fear is the tick will jump ship once in the house and land on my wife or me. I do like that some of these new products are chewable rather than topical.

Both the products are new to Canada this year. They both have good safety profiles in pre release trials. The product monographs and side effects info for both can be found online. They should be priced similarily for the length of time treated.
Both act on insect neurotransmitters so shouldn't have adverse effects on mammals.
Nexgard hasn't been tested on breeding, pregnant or nursing dogs and Bravecto has some info on breeding and pregnant dogs in their monograph. I'd be reluctant to use much of any product on a pregnant biatch.
Because they are both relatively new there may be other information that becomes available once they are in widespread use.
Ticks aren't an issue right now where I am but the dog did pick some up north of London last fall. I'll likely use Nexguard this fall when I'm west of here or down on "The County".

I will be giving my dogs the lyme vaccination this year as well. I was hesitant to use the vaccination in the past due to the cost but friends in the US can get it for $6 a dose which is a little more cost effective than the $70 my vet wanted.

Just got back from vet. The other vet there (not my vet) tells me revolution protects against all ticks after I said I want a different product because it actually doesn't. She had to break out the book. Lol
Picked up Heartguard for 79.70 (for 70lb dog) and the 4DX SNAP blood test (which came back clear on everything) was 53.90.

My vet already had Bravecto on order and it should be in tomorrow so I'm going with that. No idea on price yet.

Good point. GENERALLY speaking, it has been my experience that vets are not familiar with hunting dogs. You really have to do your own homework.

Asked my vet about Lyme vaccination. He didn't have it in stock and does normally not carry it, because people will not ask for it. As Lyme is spreading, he thinks it will become a common vaccine in a couple of years just like heartworm did.
He was pretty evasive when I asked about the price. Reason is that he needs to get a box of 20 or 25 and will only be able to sell one or two before the rest expires.

On the American forum I frequent very knowledgeable guys have used these for the last 2 ? years and really happy with them. I'm going to go with Nexgard next year.

Vet told me he sells Nexgard for a year. No issues or negative feedback so far. It does not repel ticks (only kills them).I guess people have stated differently, but the drug application reads: "NEXGARD was >97% effective against adult D. variabilis, when measured 48 hours after infestation, for 30 days."

Locations with established blacklegged tick populations infected with Lyme disease include: Long Point Provincial Park, Turkey Point Provincial Park, Rondeau Provincial Park, Pinery Provincial Park, Rouge Valley, Point Pelee National Park, Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area, Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area, and the Thousand Islands National Park area. It has great reviews. Sure it doesn't repel (I knew this) but it does kill ticks within 12 hours. They've been using it in the states for the last couple of years, and in Europe they've been using it for years before it got to the states. People find dead dried up ticks on their dogs, and I've yet to see a bad review on the stuff. I guess my vet has some experience with it since he ordered it but I didn't get a chance to talk to him about it.

It isn't the perfect solution, but it's the best choice for me with my house dog. It will be nice to get away from a topical for a change.

That is not only true for borreliosis, but for other nice things those buggers can carry. under 24h is a good chance that not much got transmitted, over 72hrs it is pretty much guarantied that the host has it
that's why you should get them out immediately. even if parts stay in the skin, which can be dealt with later.

Likely has been some additional studies since the FDA submitted data. A search of "Efficacy of Afoxolaner against Ixodes Scapularis in dogs" had a lot of results

That's a show stopper for me, with 4 dogs that would be a huge cost increase. Especially since we don't have kids and cats to worry about using a topical application. The worse we get are that the 'oils' collect dust from the sand box and they look like a skunk of for a few days.

Thankfully we have access to the US market, and I can do a 3 month protection for $15. We've been using 'Liberty 50' for about 10 yrs now and never have had a tick issue.

Mind you we don't have anywhere near the problem you folks in the S/W are having. Last year was the first year we found ticks in Apr. We usually don't have to start the prevention till May, so it is getting worse here and we've done our first application already.
