Some pics from yesterday at my grandparents house (WMU50). Deer look OK, if a little scraggly. They're looking for handouts, even helping themselves to the grain bag in the garage. Our daughter is rather taken with them

They must be starving for acting that way.
No, just used to being fed. They lose a lot of fear when food is essentially free as opposed to having break trail and work for it in the bush.Quote:

Once the snow is gone these deer will leave. When the snow comes back they show up. Like clockwork. A couple of them are even recognizable year after year.
Agree with your point that deer will starve rather than break a trail - even 50 feet to more food can be too far. Not sure if it is the fear of being trapped or the energy required to do it when they are running a very slow metabolism - but it has been fairly well documented.Quote:

My neighbor in upstate NY has been doing the same thing for the past 30 odd years or more. He has sent pics to me with over 50 deer on his lane way waiting to be fed...The last two winters have been exceptionally hard on them with more snow than the average winter and nice to see that the deer that are coming into being fed are in good shape. The local farmers in the area are helping him absorb some of the cost for feed by supplying him with a good portion of it. What goes around comes around...

Pretty cool to see. I always try to take the kids for a drive through the Petroglyphs Provincial Park area near Stoney Lake in the early spring and we often see the deer behaving the same way. Hanging around cottagers' driveways looking for handouts. Makes for some good photos and a good way to spend an afternoon.
