Several huge raccoons keep stealing the bait.
Not sure if the trap gate lands on their tail or what but we cannot catch the bruisers, just the yearlings.
Basic $99 live traps from home depot.
Any suggestions ?

what size trap are you using? i had to move up to a bigger size, after that never had one get out...
what i started doing with my small traps to maximise catchability was teeter the trap over the edge of something, so that when the coon went into it, and got near the bait at the end, the trap fell off, and snapped shut, pretty well guaranteed a secure catch, if they didnt knock the trap off first
SSS not an option?
Traps work 24 hours a day, catching a Raccoon is not easy to do when you waiting for them.
Buy cheap cat food and partly open can to allow smell out and cable or wire tie can to end of the trap. They will get careless. Also anchor with a driveway marker on each side thru the trap and put plywood under trap to save your lawn.
My luck improved by smearing peanut butter on the middle of the trigger pad. They could no longer reach the bait from the sides.
Other wise after setting off trap they would tilt and remove any bait along side the wire cage.
Peanut butter is of no interest to local cats, thus preventing them from messing you up.. Did however catch a rabbit!!!
If you raccoons come back, here is a great trap for them. They run about $12. Use a marshmallow for bait. The only animal it will trap is a coon.

Yes you legally need a trapping licence to use them
wtf is SSS?
A lot more latitude, no restrictions. I switched to these traps here on my farm because the cats would keep getting caught in the 'Have a Hart' live traps. I have never had a cat caught in one of these.
I bought mine at a trappers store in NY state, so not sure where you can get them here. Someone told me you can get some local agricultural feed stores to order them in.
farmer” means a person whose chief occupation is farming and,
(a) who is living upon and tilling his or her own land, or land to the possession of which he or she is for the time being entitled, or
(b) who is a settler engaged in clearing land for the purpose of bringing it to a state of cultivation; (“exploitant agricole”)
this is is the FWCA interpretation of a farmer , just owning land does not make one a farmer and I see that there may be some confusion on this out there .
if you are legally able to use these devices I can give you some tips on how to catch coon in them consistently , there are tricks that make them more effective
I had a coon that kept flipping my cage trap over and stealing my bait so I set a 160 in box .he was there the next morning. .Dutch
i had a skunk living under my deck that i trapped this past week. it took a few days to catch him, but here's what i saw.
1. Skunk would circle the cage and almost recognize what it was.
2. skunk would then try to take the bait without going inside.
3. skunk was successful with most baits-- he'd just reach through the bars and grab them. what he couldn't pull through he'd chew on through the bars.
4. instead of shooting him where there was a chance he'd go under my deck to expire, i took the bigger cage and strapped a can of salmon to the middle where he couldn't move it.
within 3 hours i had an angry skunk who knew his time was up. sounds like you're playing cat and mouse and he's outsmarting you right now ;)
