Old man used to use lettuce leaves. Seemed to do the trick
My go to as bait for live trapping everything is sardines.....an MNR biologist was using them here to trap skunks, raccoons etc when the were on a Rabies Vaccine blitz for this area.
Had one go inside my trap, then broke out somehow.
Groundhogs are daytime animals and seem to be trap leery, at least that is what I have found.
I ended up getting this guy when he decided to stay by the hole opening rather than rush down, but a 22 LR on a golf course may not be allowed.
Carrots, sweet corn, peas, lettuce, strawberries......
Any chance of getting hold of Bill Murray and some C4????LOL…Good luck.
Beat me to it. Watched Caddyshack on the plane to Vegas a couple months back. Laughing my butt off.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR0sWU1HzTE
no luck thus far with carrots and lettuce... gonna add some sweet feed to it tomorrow...
the owner has a permit to shoot them, but the location where these ones are, does not allow for a safe shot... and a conniber or leg hold trap not a good idea on a golf course lol
There are a few tricks to catching groundhogs in cages , bait is one of them but there are others , many people have trouble caging groundhogs and I get quite a few jobs doing it I've caught them in as little as ten minutes after setting the best way to learn is to be observant and learn from what works and what doesn't , I'll throw you one tip though get some bananas
If you're a trapper and you're in an area that allows suspended land snare. Lay a 1/16th inch fox snare loop around the pig's hole. Camlock works well on the snare. Attach snare to 40lb muskie line on a Penn 209 reel, complete with heavy action rod. Download the groundhog warning chirp call off the Foxpro site. Set your Foxpro caller 10 feet from the burrow. Lay on your gut 20 feet away and use the remote to call to the pig. When Piggy pops up, pull the snare and you'll get the pig around the armpits. Gently retrieve the poor Pig and use a set of leather welding gloves to grab him by the nape. Release the snare gently so you don't harm him. Pop him into a livetrap for transport. Sing to the Pig, to calm him during transport. Give him a treat, then let him go at your buddie's backyard when he's away at work.
One bait that I have found very good for groundhogs is cantaloupe. works great.
never did catch him... appears to have moved on though, as no tracks or anything leaveing the holes for a few days... guess he got the hint, and headed for the hay field across the road...
lettuce, green leafy material worked at our place. Once caught they will be relentless at pursuing an escape. Connibear will work also if you can pattern them a bit and then sit and monitor the trap. I would not leave it unattended. You could put a wire cage over the connibear and the hole. Just saying. Some people have cages for keeping fish alive, would work excellent over the trap and hole.
When I was a kid we used apples for bait. The smell of it rotting used to bring then right in. Good luck.
they were hammering my soya bean plants one year
A dose of dry ice down there burrow will do the trick...puts them to sleep for good
Where did they go?
I had a similar thing happen this year. A neighbor asked me to dispatch a ground hog that was digging under their farmhouse.
It became pretty obvious that there were actually 4 living in the holes. I took 2 with the 204 and the other two just up and disappeared....
No further sign of them.
