Had one of those Drones check out my whirlybird

So two weeks ago, My brother in law were out for a cruise in the boat, when all of a sudden a 4 prop drone came out. I'm sure it'll be the norm in a few years..... but I didn't like it at all! We watched it for about 10 secs thinking it would leave. It just stayed hovering for about a min, 20' from my boat, in the middle of the lake. Out of instinct I quickly pointed to it with one finger on one hand, and pulled out the classic windmill with the other. Not sure if who was watching, but it took off immediatly. Anyone else been peeked at with one of these things? It hasn't come back since, but would love to have the 12 with me if it keeps up.

I wonder what the consequence's would be if you did shoot it down.

How would they know ? It would be lights out.

A good cast with a rubber plug right over the drone, I don't imagine it would fly with a birds nest of line in the rotors.

Are these being flown by the authorities? Seems like interference with legal hunting and/or fishing to me.

they are quite neat IMO, but a slippery slope to people having too much access to other peoples lives. I have a buddy who has one for filming BMX stuff, and an architect we work for has one for doing site inspections etc.
the average person who gets one of these will be nothing but a nuisance to people after they get bored flying it around their yard.

legally there is nothing you can do since you are in public, and they will be recording you if you throw something at it or shoot it.

however I have to admit it would be fun to try and take it down. I would think if they are flying it around you when you are hunting, you could have a case for interference with your hunt, however we all know those charges don't every get laid or don't stick.

Nah, pretty sure it was a cottager. Prob with live feed to a monitor cuz as soon as I whipped er out, it was gone. Next time it'll be the belly slap followed by large marbles from the slingshot. (great idea Hunter John)

Spinning rod and floating plug....(you wouldn't want to loose good tackle if the line breaks)

Don't forget that if you can't see who is flying the drone then the person flying the drone does not have it in his sight. That is a violation of federal aviation law in canada and I would find that person and call the cops. It's a pretty hefty fine even for a first offence.

There was an article in today's Spectator about drones. I'm paraphrasing here but in the article it said staff at the RBG saying that people that are using them to photograph wildlife are actually harassing the animals. Further down in the article it also said that it is an offense to fly one over private property without written permission. I'd say if your hunting on private land and one starts buzzing you - kaboom. Fishing or hunting on public land or a lake, well there's been some earlier suggestions that would work just as well.

Who say's " It's ineffective given the target size ", I have no problems hitting starlings with a 7/8 oz. load of # 7 1/2 shot, the starlings are much smaller than the drones so I see no problem in hitting a drone that is interfering with "my privacy ".

you have no reasonable expectation of privacy on public property, and in some cases even on private property (ie your front yard) you have no reasonable expectation either, so therefore you would be at fault if you damaged the drone in these cases.

that being said the whole interrupting a hunt thing would be interesting to see play out in court. I think it should be able to be enforced if folks are scaring game away, or messing up your shooting lanes by flying it around, but as I understand it that charge is rarely laid and rarely sticks.

how cool would it be to fly one of those things around in a place like hullett, in the spring or summer, when you cannot canoe because of nesting wildlife. assuming it did not scare the wildlife a lot, you would see some amazing things and tons of ducklings and other wildlife.

Someone invading your privacy or interfering with your hunt does not permit you to vandalize their property. That seems to be lost on a lot of people here.

Canadian courts are very anti-vigilante, and if you even dare suggest that they should in your defense, well good luck with that, but you're going to get screwed badly.

Replace the drone with someone's vehicle in your "revenge thoughts" and ask if they still make sense. A guy comes into your driveway and starts looking around and you feel your privacy is being violated - are you going to shoot his car, not likely. A lot of stupidity being tossed around in this thread.

I have no problems, I've been photographed many times fishing and had someone with quite a fancy setup video taping me fishing down south a few years back, unfortunately I lost their contact. Walk into any bank, Tim Horton's store... heck even walk by them and your picture is taken thousands of times a week... or was it something illegal you were doing?

But I am glad you recognize yourself for what you are, too bad you don't have an aversion to other criminal behaviour. My bet is that if someone didn't like you fishing by their cottage and setup something to damage your motor or snag your gear you would be crying and whining.... but if you do do vandalism to it, no problem... for me, it is you committing the crime and I am sure I can find a lawyer or judge and afterward be able to afford a Lily Camera or Phantom to replace it.

Are you really advocating spying? Guess we're all different. To each they're own. I've made my point, I'll gladly take the charge if I'm being spied on.

Unless you live in a very small town or rural area, you'd be surprised how often your picture is taken. And unless you are on your own property or somewhere where you would expect privacy (restrooms, gym, etc), you don't have much.

Fishing out on a lake is pretty public - really puzzled by the mindset of someone who feels entitled to privacy there.

Me to, I always figured they had psychological issues (and seeing how often violence or vandalism is advocated and their confusion with peeping into someones house) or had criminal intent (in this case fishing out of season, over limit, no license....). I spent a couple hours being someones target when I was fly fishing just before sunrise down in the Caribbean one time, his lens was probably as much as our vacation. Another time someone was taping me trying to catch a huge Jack.... line touched dock... good bye Jack. :-( I am not so self conscious as to really care, I am doing nothing illegal (or indecent like others) and if it is a public place... so what. After all every commercial and public building anymore has one or more camera's watching the cash etc. I think it is standard for Tim Horton's to have one for the door and each cash alone.

I wonder if he stands in his window at home waiting for someone to notice him so he can show of his "whirlybird"? .... or if the girls kept laughing and it was his way of trying to get a laugh?

In reality it is not really any different than waving at the boat going by with someone taking pictures.

I think it depends where you are - if your out in the middle of a lake and a drone hovers over you I don't think you can do anything but if your in your back yard sitting around a swimming pool and a drone comes over and hovers over you I think you can take it down - I know I would - it called - stand your air - like stand your ground -

I have fished many small lakes throughout Ontario over the years and no one was around to spy. I would find it very interesting if one of these flying contraptions showed up . But if it did and started to harass me the whole time I was fishing in peace and no one around to claim ownership of it onshore I would think most people would take a shot at it. If it were a one time occurrence and it only watched me for a few minutes and then flew off I wouldn't take any action. I like to fish in peace and enjoy the time away from my office at one of these small quiet lakes to enjoy the great outdoors. I would hope that the operator of the drone would also respect my space or privacy while I was fishing.

While in Versaille a Chinese man start taking picture of my step daughter, my dad saw him doing it, we both were about to drop him but my better half told us not to so he had to explain himself the security.
if you fly your drone over peoples you got issues, get a life and let people be.

Agreed, but most drones have less than 10 minutes battery and a very limited range ( I just checked, the one I bought has less than 100m),and even the professional model the DJI Phantom II is only 25 minutes and only 20 minutes for the Lily Camera.

I have had guys in Jet skis or boats be much more annoying and almost tip my canoe and a boat went by my father in law so close it actually dumped him (in the kayak) in the lake... and just kept going, someone else came along and helped him right the kayak and gave him a tow and ride back ( I had taken the kids fishing and was in another area).

Sad so many people have little respect for others anymore, look at those willing to destroy others property worth hundreds or thousands, people will pull up 10 feet off the end of docks and fish with music cranked, wake boats with huge speakers etc. etc. but in reality for a drone to be a bother it would have to be a very expensive model and multiple batteries. They are probably are just trying it out, want to know who is out there, if you had any luck, the usual curiosity, just wave and they will probably go somewhere else in a minute to two, no reason to act like an idiot... and if you do they will have the picture or video proof. If someone wants to take a picture of me fishing (or with luck catching a fish), why not it didn't hurt me and if they are a pro they might talk to me after and give me a contact to have them send me the pics, if not it is no different than the thousands of pics taken in a year... yawn.

I do and on a trip to China in the one area of the country where there are few tourists we had teen age girls, business men (from an even more remote area) and couples wanting pictures taken with our kids. They thought the kids were cute and somewhere in China there are pictures of our kids with complete strangers, SO WHAT! We got lots of bows and thank you and thought it was fun, odd but fun and I have a life and I guess but I just don't have the insecurities and paranoia some seem to have.

I remember when the term "pervert" referred to people taking unwelcomed photos and video...not the people being photographed/videoed.

I would say a person exposing themselves to a drone would qualify or a person taking pictures of a sexual nature, but the owner of the drone had no intention like that and left when he encountered such a person so it obviously isn't the person taking the picture or video. He could be considered a pest maybe if he had hung around and buzzed him but that's obviously not the case so there seems to only be one person that fits in that regard so far.

And that's your choose, it seems like you like the spot light and that's great. I don't so as many, people should respect that and shouldn't use their drone to bother us. Rules are going to change, it's just a matter of time, until then it's going to be interesting.

I wish JBen was here to tell you all about the rights of photographers, he says you have no rights to your own image , and they can take your picture whenever they want, I believe him.

Others have gone very far out of their way to pervert the word pervert and also made the assumption that they had rights in regards to their privacy and image taken in a public place.

As I understand it only a if you are a specific subject or model do you have rights to their image and just saying they were taking a picture of a boat on a lake gives the photographer full rights to use and distribute, there is even a artist I heard about taking images from others online photo albums to use in their work in galleries. Many peoples faces are now on display or even sold without their knowledge. Just look at Photobucket and their use of an image, many sign their rights away and if others want a framed picture etc. of someone else or in this case their drone... no problem.

The Chinese guy in Versaille would be an example of someone taking a specific person's image without their permission (no clue what would be allowed in France), although in China with their lack of privacy people just take pictures of what and who ever they feel like. It was explained that pictures of what and who they saw were just part of modern Chinese culture that has lost much of concept of personal rights and privileges and entitlements we see in Canada There is little or no concept of privacy in China and as our image is taken thousands of times at every business and hundreds more when we go to a place like Niagara Falls etc. I think Canadians will relax and be less paranoid about their picture being taken and just take a "so what" attitude. Actual invasions of privacy by REAL Peeping Toms will continue to be both an issue and illegal of course and should be.

True we are all making assumptions, and perverting this whole thread, and perverting the actions of the assailant.

At issue for me isn't if the controller was taking long panning shots, or you happen to be in one of their exposures. It is that he/she targeted the OP, getting nosey. In my upbringing that is just rude. Same a eavesdropping on a conversation.

FW - what the person piloting the drone did may be seen to be rude, but that doesn't make them an "assailant". There was no "attack". The OP's reaction to that could get him hauled into court - it is not just rude, it is prohibited by law. The OP just one more rude person trying to outdo other people's rudeness. That he would complain about the rudeness of the drone pilot and then describe his even greater rudeness here is pretty stupid.

I'm not sure why the rude drone pilot draws so much attention when our society has degraded to a valueless one where individuals like the "FHRITP" guy think their behavior is amusing. The drone pilot's behavior pales in comparison. The behavior of the OP here is pretty much as bad as the FHRITP guy.

Privacy , to me is my one acre especially my back yard, what I do within the confines of "my property especially my back yard is no ones business" if anyone spies on me while I am on my property , then they will suffer the consequences [drone shot down] because that drone is to close and spying.
If I am out in public, on a lake fishing or in public anywhere else , that is a different matter and I wouldn't be too concerned about a drone flying around. If you are out in public you take your chances of having your picture taken.

That picture you took was most likely taken with a lense that cost in the thousands which I seriously doubt that a drone user would mount on his camera and drone which would cost less than 1/4 the price of your lense.
The normal drone user would be fairly close to be able to keep an eye on his drone and we would know he is there.
The drones we are referring to are not in the same category as what is used by spy agency's and the military.

Not so much anymore, I was having lunch and just looking at some of the medium priced options and many of them can carry the Sony DX-10 with has a 10X zoom.

I found a video here and show it on a Phantom FC40, a $800 drone, so for less than $1000 you can have a drone that will have over a 1/4 mile range, 10X zoom.

IF someone wants to spy on you they can, I have a Lumix camera that can zoom to 60X for less than $400, many $300 video cameras have 25X + zoom, you can add the QX-10 to your smart phone and be almost unnoticeable from the person playing a game, a drone is the expensive way and someone flying it up to you and is just 50 ft away just wants a picture. "Spying" can be done alot easier without a drone or with a drone with a gimble it can be done discretely with a zoom from up high or if you land it and use the zoom somewhere you have a camera platform that is small and quiet. They might be trying to be a jerk too but I think we can safely say it wasn't the case.

I have a drone, and while I personally wouldn't use it in a manner that might seem intrusive or harassing or anything. I'd nail anyone to the wall and to the full extent who thought they were all that and above the law (your "rights" are no greater than my "rights") as some here seem to think they are. And if they wanted to get in my face, Id nail them that way as well if "push came to shove". For all the talk in these forums about ethics, bad mouthing of tresspessers, poachers, thieves who don't respect other peoples property, etc, etc, etc. Always puzzles me why so many are eager to break laws, infringe on others rights etc.



With respect to various laws and rights including Transport Canada's take on these things lots of misinformation in here. And for what it's worth I do see a day (and possible need) when they get cracked down on. Until such a day if they aren't breaking any laws..................................

I heard they have to register with the authorities governing airspace and they for no reason can fly one within 100 ft of a occupied home......... the rules a very strict So I would guess if it was within 100ft of your personal space free game because the operator is knowingly breaking the law

Dont think so, change the drone to a guy in a car parked in front of your house. You may not like it, but it does not give you any right to go damage his car.

The rules have not changed yet, they are still in the works.

I know where someone's drone is that they lost. It's in the Ganaraska Forest hanging about 60' up a tree with no branches for the first 20' at the top of a 80' ridge. It's been there since Thanksgiving Weekend. From the ground using binos,it looks like a fairly expensive unit. The Black Bear season ended last week and the black powder Deer hunt ends today and the entire Forest is now closed to all motorized vehicle use,so,it should be very quiet. I'm heading into the Forest on Monday for Grouse. If it's still hanging up there,I'm taking my climbing gear and a buddy and bringing it down. I'll let you know if it works out.

I load of #6 grouse shot would make it come down faster.

Ninety days,seabast. Found property should be turned in/reported to Police. If it's not claimed within that time,the item may be returned to you if you desire or it may be disposed of at your discretion. The only items that don't fall into that catagory are firearms or illegal materials.

Maybe,different municipalities have different policies. In our area,it was explained to me that all found property must be accounted for before the Police auction which,in Durham,is twice per year. That way,they don't have to store all the junk that's found.

Just an update. So,yesterday,I get to the tree where the drone was (is) and it's laying on the ground among the trees broken into a dozen pieces laying all over,I'm assuming from smashing into branches and slamming into the ground. No doubt,high winds knocked it out of the treetop. Not a chance of repairing it. Garbage....and that's where it went. Oh,well.........

If a helicopter is hovering over my yard, I get the range finder and if he's too low, I call TC; done deal.
There are clear rules for general aviation, and the pilots know them. If they don't follow them they face consequences.
Now we have every second ******* flying one of those drones and you don't even know who it is.
All of you who suggest you should accept it, most likely own one for one weird reason or another!

There's no wierd reason to own one if these things any more than it's wierd flying RC aircraft in clubs all over the country. My grandson has one (smaller version) and it's a lot of fun just messing with it in the back yard. I've only had to get it off the roof,twice. I've only had a complaint from the one neighbor that typically complains about everything,anyway,so,I simply ignored him. Threatening to call Transport Canada looking for some type of enforcement? That's a waste of time. There's only four "inspectors" in the entire country and local Police want nothing to do with it.

There were no markings on this thing,at all,not even a make and model number or serial number. I guess someone didn't really want it back. I wish I had climbed the tree when I first saw it because it looked like a fairly pricey model. Too late,now.
