Hey rimmer im from Tottenham, when you go out hunting salmon let me know. i need a river fishing partner
Hey Chucky,
I can do you one better ... my parents own 100 acres and on there property is a prime fishing spot on the Nott' .... was thinking about bringing down my bbq, setting up a tent ( incase of bad weather ) and letting the good times roll!
- Rim'
Rimmer - you're a bit early yet for the salmon, but you might get into some other fish in there during the summer... wouldn't surprise me if you found a deep hole if you got bass, walleye, catfish, and maybe the odd resident trout.
BD
sweet ... I think I am going to throw a few lines this week and see
Thanks BD
- Rim'
heads up boys, Heard that the run started last weekend. Guy at work said he was heading out this weekend to give it a try. He has been saying all summer the run is going to be earily. Good luck
I'm from Alliston and noticed today, lots of cars parked at the bridge between Baxter and Thorton. I thought that was a little strange so I guess something must be in...or long weekend rush??? If you find out let me know. I might just give it a go.
Later
Why dont you come up here in Angus on Highway 90 and fish under the bridge!
I have seen quite a few pulled out of there the last couple years.Oh dont forget your cue!:D
Camoman : I have been on the river every day for the last 5 days or so and haven't seen a single salmon ... hooked a ton of 6-8 inch trout but no salmon.
xw01708 : Is there good fishing at the bridge between baxter and thornton ? I always see cars there as well.
perrysbirds : Where exactly are you talking about ? And by "Cue" do you mean sitting and waiting because there are so many people ??? :) ???
-Rim'
Rimmer,Im not sure about the bridge in baxter as I have never fished it before.I am pretty new to Angus with only being here a couple of years. However on highway 90(Right in Angus) I have seen lots of Salmon pulled out of the river over the last 2 yrs.If you want to come up from Alliston sometime I will show you the area where i am talking about!
Oh what i mean by the "cue" is bring your barbecue and we can have some burgers or whatever!:D
Perry in Angus!
Thanks Perry, I will def' take you up on that! I have only been to Angus twice before!
- Rim'
I fish that river every year in fall and dont go till mid september and the run is descent but have been thinking with the weather conditions they might start early going to check it out sometime this week will let you know
With all the rain we have had this summer I bet you will be able to hook one sometime this month.
I have never fished at the bridge between Baxter / Thornton but I did take a walk down there one day and it doesn't look too bad open water and fairly deep. I found the best place to fish for Salmon in the Not was @ wasaga beach sand banks the fish still appear somewhat silver and its nice and wide. I have fished the pine river for years and the number of salmon seem to be down over the last couple. One place I like is the mouth of the beaver river in Thornberry casting a silver meps (good fight). Angus is also good but I think you have to pay to fish on the south side of the bridge so I stopped fishing there. I could be wrong but the north side is free but lots of people. Sept depending on the rain should be OK but I have also heard of salmon in Aug. I do more lake fishing now so I will ask around and let you know when there in. Cheers
hey rimmer i fished the nod :fish:all weekend no salmon runnin yet,all i go was a few 27-28 inch gators, pike lol
I've caught salmon in the middle of August in the past. I only fished way upstream on the Pine R. Without Beaver damn removal I'd speculate they are not getting that far anymore but Try off Airport Rd. Just north of mansfield River rd I believe first left after the Mansfield Rec. area and then go south on Concession 4 Pine River runs under the road there and absolutely no crowds and a beautiful pool, plus if you like the trout it holds a lot of good brookies in the area with easier access then the Boyne R.
This year I'd have to say after the next torrential downpour of a day or two solid they'll be in thick numbers.
hi i have been fishing the nod for the last several days,i see no sign of salmon yet, fished from wasaga down to angus, but talked to people who say they have caught salmon all ready but havent seen one or anybody with one lol
Same Avenger ... mind you I am fishing South of Nicholson Damn ... tons on Trout 10"-12" but haven't seen anything remotely looking like a salmon ... and I have been out there 5 days a week for almost 3 weeks now for the wee trout.
- Rim'
Anyone going fishing tonite or tomorrow, would love to get out there with someone that knows the area better?
snkeye : Just sent you a pm :)
hey rim what you using to get the brook trout and where,i spent the last 2 days on the nod no sign of salmon but i see alot of carp playin on the surfice
i have used everything in my tackle box lol from silver canadian wiggler to cleos and some roe sacks never caught a thing i am on holidays and is hopin to hook a early salmon ,but i see no sign of salmon in the nod yet even tho i hear stories of people catchin them already
hey Rimmer you have any luck yet? i prolly wont be able to get out to the river untill next week keep us updated if you catch anything man!
Good luck!
Hey all :)
Im still up in Port Carling ( Got married on the weekend ) but I went the night before we left to come up here and I caught nine or ten 8 - 12" Trout ( Rainbow's - Brown's ) Nothing huge, but some decent small ones :) I have yet to see a Salmon as of yet with my own eye's ... and I am on that river more than anyone I know. I will let you know the first time I see one :)
- Rim'
Avenger ... I have been using a ton of different set up's lure wise ... but bar-none, the best lure to catch where I am fishing is a size 1 panther martin, silver bumble bee with dressing. This lure on the portion of the Not' that I am on get's a fish every 20 cast's or so ... I love them so much, I went to Bass Pro, and CT and bought 8 of them ( I have been known to put a few in tree's .... so I had to be prepared with more! )
- Rim'
hey everyone caught my 1st salmon today on the nod 8 lbs 14 ounces Attachment 1909
Attachment 1910
nice! Where about's did you catch it ?? South of Angus ? North of Angus ?
Let us know :)
- Rim'
i caught it about half way between angus and wasaga beach, and the time on the photo is incorrect lol it was around 6pm i hooked him near hwy 26
Don't you need a special premitt now to fish in Angus?
not that im aware off, if you want to fish the pine you have to pay, either day to day or by the season pass. But as far as the Notty is concerned i dont think so!
My buddy and I went out tonight to our *secret* ;) location on the Notty and landed 1 - 15" Rainbow 1 - 14" Brown and 1 - REALLY nice brown 20.5" .... sadly for ME ... I was the guy who caught the 14" brown .... he caught the other two. We also caught a gangload of 6-10".
I also went to the Grand River today .... that was a lot of fun. Took a fly fishing lesson at Grand River Troutfitters ..... had a blast :)
- Rim'
Cool man i just started fly fishing this year. I bought a cheep rod from crappy tire and went to town, its a blast. Im heading out to the Notty on thursday ill post after
Have you caught much fly fishing ?? I haven't landed a single fish when it comes to fly fishing ..... but had a blast taking the lesson.
- Rim'
ive only caught small guys and one decent brown trout, i dont know the right flies to use or when the hatch is and all that stuff, i just buy flies and hope for the best!
reach into the water and pull out a big rock.....look on whats under the rock....these insects make up 80% of a fish's diet .... match your flies ( look, size, color ) to what you find under the rock and you will be feeding them what they are used to :)
- Rim'
2 years ago I took a 1/2 day (sat afternoon )fly tying / 1/2 day (Sun Morning) fly fishing lesson from them. Learned lots caught a small hammer handle (pike) on a streamer and several 6"ish browns on dries. It was a blast, taught me everything from tying flies to tiying flies on, fly selection, determining the hatch, casting, mending, reading the water.
I gotta get out with my fly setup soon.
FW
yeah you have to get a permit to fish in essa township thats angus and baxter it costs 40 dollars, which really pisses me of cause i have a ont fishing licence did not say excluding essa township when i bought it lol :fish:
Where the hell do you buy it then ? City Hall ??
Nevermind, I answered my own question. Here are the places to buy the permit should you want to fish in this area :
Angus Home HardwareSimcoe Bait & Tackle Inc. ~ BarrieEssa Township Administration Office ~ BaxterEconomic Development Office ~ AngusNicolston's Dam ~ Alliston
are you sure you still need to have the permit?? they used to have signs posted saying that you did.. now there arent any signs anywhere.. the only sign that is up is saying that between a certain area "essa" its catch and release rainbows only..
Yes the permit is required to fish here in Angus on the Notty!
i think the permit is kinda stupid.. i know there are alot of morons who leave garbage all over and someone has to be paid to clean it up but.. us responsible fisherman should be picking up what ever garbage we find anyways.. my stepdad has always carried a green garbage bag in his vest and everytime he goes into the river no matter where he is if hes garbage he cleans it up..
Don't forget that it is catch and release for trout between the pine and the Boyne on the Notty. If you happen to get and steelies while out salmon fishing you have to let them go.
rimmer my contact on the notti teels me some fish hav gone up in the last10 days but they were a little early the main push just depends on some cool temps at night and a day or two of good rain and the games will begin goin up next weekend for a scout and hopefully they r in but its all timing and weather bro u goota be there when they are still fresh they will hit contrarry to wht a lot of peeps say.. the window should be in the next 2 wks if u got any stealhead with roe this spring and u saved it tie bags the size of loonies or alitte bigger and hold on..the chinooks hate stealhead roe they will smash it with abandon..... just find yourself a nice pool and start driftin under a float or bottom bouncin....if u get no hits but there r fish in ur hole just blow up a nice juicy crawler full of air andbottom bouns it or run it under a float this changeup usually works... u gotta remember these fish hav seen a lot of bags on there way up stream...anyway happy fishin and good luck
hey guys as you well know i caught a 9 lb salmon on the 18th and this morning i hooked a real big one and snapped my line ,i am runnin 20lb test.seems to be more salmon the last week,i hooked this one a green and silver cleo as well, stickin with the cleos they seem to like them,i normally use them for rainbow :fish:
Hi Guys!
I was reading this thread as a guest and just had to register and jump in!
I would love to try fishing salmon in the Nottawasaga.
I've never done it before but I got a 14 foot aluminum this year and would love to get in on this, where can I launch this boat in the river where I have a chance to get any? (I don't have a permit for Essa)
Got any advice for a brand newbie?
Thanks!
is your boat light enough to launch by hand is so i lnow a few places north of essa to launch, klondike park and edenville :fish: dot know of any places where you can back a trailer in tho
I could lift it in off the trailer no prob!
Can I park my truck
n trailer there?
You can always launch at the mouth of the river a Wasaga. There are 3 launchs that I know of. One at Nancy Island park, one right at the mouth of the river and one at Sturgeon Point Marina which is right accross the river from the river mouth launch on River Road.
The first 2 I know you have to pay for parking. Not sure about Sturgeon Point Marina. I would imagine you would have to pay some sort of launch fee there as well.
Good luck.
Margarine Alley
Also forgot that there is a launch on Klondyke Park road. Just after you cross the bridge there is a big park on the east side of the road. There is a launch in there. Don't know about any fees though.
Margarine Alley
Where should I try my hand at catching some Salmon?
Should it be better at the mouth of further up river?
Please help, like I said I don't know jack about fishin for salmon, thanks in advance for any help.
Hey everyone,
I use to fish the Nott when i was a kid with my dad. That is going on about 15 years ago. we use to jump off 89 at the dam ( i cant remember the name) right at the in and drive up to that small bridge and work our way back to the dam. we use to pull about 3-5 fish in every time we went. since it has been a long time that i was there, would that area just off the hwy still be a good spot? also if someone could tell me the name of the dam as well as where the boyne river is that would be great. like i said i havent been to that area for a long time.
thanks
hi just got back from edenville no salmon today, but you can launch there from your trailer if you have a truck i saw 3 guys launch today, but if your boat is light its a perfect spot to hand launch and yes there is lots of parking for truck and trailer, :fish: and to the other guy about the name of the damm i think you may be talking about nicolsons dam :fish:
mopefish launch the boat and just look for deep holes ,you may find some holding up in those areas,if you have a little fish finder on board would help find the holes, hope that helps
Spent a couple of hours today on the river in Wasaga Beach sand banks area. Didn't see or catch any fish but it appears they are catching them at the mouth in the boats so it won't be long now. You would think with the # of people fishing both on the Not and the pine river today the run is on?. I think 1/2more weeks.
On a different note; I was able to pick up some fishing line and some garbage today that was left there within the last couple of days, no wonder everyone is posting no Trespassing. WHAT ARE PEOPLE THINKING??????
I Tried the Notty this weekend close to wasaga, the water was really murky i did not see a fish or catch anything, i was drifting roe and tried some spoons but no luck, maybe next week
Was on the notty this past weekend just to check it out with to my surprize fish where jumping and being caught unforntly we had no luck close to angus
wow lots of salmon on the nod, a guy i know caught 10 in angus yesterday, and today i went with a buddy and put his boat in the river in edenville and went up river as far as we could get,he caught 2 and lost 2 me i was skunked lol not a hit :fish:
Well I've been out a couple times, tried everything in the box, not even a hit, gonna keep tryin though, thanks for the advise guys. I think I'm gonna have to get a fish finder since I don't know the river so well. I'm determined to catch my first salmon this year. I'll keep you posted.
hey most people i talk to is having real good luck with the rapala j13 jointed green with orange belly
With a lake full of beautful largemouth bass at your disposal rimmer why would you fish for a dirty old boot of a salmon?
hound
We went out to the notty last night, no hits but we saw a bunch of fish swirling out there. Gonna keep trying!
The Notty is usually murky at the best of times. Don't let that put you off, there is some great fishing there. Just adapt. Mepps spinners held in the current around current breaks is my go to bait. Just hold it in the current down stream until it stops spinning. Crank in a couple turns of the reel to lift it off the bottom to get it spinning again. Be prepared for arm wrenching hits.
The Notty takes a bit of time to get used to. Once you have adapted, the fishing is great. Visibility of 2 feet is considered pretty good for the Notty.
muddler
hound you are to funny,i catch smallies and large on simcoe, they are not even in the same catagory for good eating as a nice siler salmon , on the bbg, and the fight a 10-12 lb salmon gives on the nod is awesome
I ran Salmon express charters out of port credit for years . you couldn't pay me to go salmon fishing anymore. We had people who had never fished before reel in twenty lb fish. where does the skill come in ?I am not a giant fish eater more like perch walljaw and pike, occasional muskie on a spit.
hound
Hey Hound no offence to you. But I have been on a charter for salmon before. Of course there is no skill in reeling in a fish on a 30-pound plus line, and a rod the size of a tree.
It's much different when your shore fishing at the mouth of the harbor. Casting spoons or rappelas in to the lake. Using a 6 to 10lbs line. Fighting 20 pound plus salmon.Fighting waves and other elements such as huge rocks and snags. That takes a bit of skill don't you think?
Lol funny you should mention a rod the size of a tree and thirty pound test ,there is a picture from our sparrow lake tourney of a fish that came on a very similar rig except it was 65lb test .
And I would then call it coordination not skill when fighting a fish under those conditions.
hound
I would say the customer may not have any skill to reel in these monsters, but the charter captain better have the skill to put the customer on to fish. Any idiot can drag spoons around the lake and get lucky now and then, but to be able to consistantly be on the fish everyday takes some skill and knowledge wouldn't you think?
to a certain extent yes- baitfish= shinnies common sense, but consistency is the key
to a point before- a 10lb bass vs a salmon- salmon every day, bass is fun on light tackle but that same talk would be smashed by a 15lb+ shinny or bow, you dont have to avoid rocks, trees other anglers, wade into the river maybe get soaked but thats the fun part of the catch is trying to land a fish in the most uncomfortable place without a net- ive hooked lots of huge fish both riggin and river and still by far is the river... go catch a wild steelhead and see how you get on
Many folks now call GL migratory "rainbow trout" steelhead since the main differentiation is the migration aspect (i.e. 'anadromous'). Here in the GL of course there's no saltwater, however, they are migrating from a huge body of water into the river therefore the "steelhead" naming convention.
I may be wrong but the strain stocked in the GL were of steelhead decent...not rainbow trout.
great lake rainbow (steelhead)

I totally agree. I have caught many trout and salmon on my 13ft noodle rod and float reel as well as my 10 ft with spinning reel and multiple flyrod combos in most tribs in Ontario as well as a few in the states and out west. Although I love to pitch a jig or throw a top water for bass in the summer, my true passion is trib fishing. Like you said i'd rather catch fresh bows on 6lb test with a 3lb leader than bass on 60lb braid any day of the week.
Hey Guys,
Fished the pine river on monday. Many nice size salmon and lots of trout. Landed a pretty good size one, but was having trouble getting them to bit. Any tips on lures that work best for salmon being picky?
hey what kind of trout you gettin, and as for the salmon alot of guys are having luck with the rapala j11 and j13 green with orange belly
Been down there at the Pine this week... Caught 9lb Salmon and saw quite a few trout. I would wait for the rain coming in on Monday and fish Tuesday till the end of the week should be good fishing. Heading down there again probably everyday until the season ends.
The trout in the pine were lots of rainbow, which were hitting on flies. I will try rapala the next time i go thanks.
Your going to make a lot of friends :)
I found this post 5 years after it was made!
