Attempted Break In

The other day I had an attempted break in at my house in the middle of the afternoon while I was at work. What scared who ever off was my dog. I have a feeling they were targeting my firearms which are under lock and key. I have nothing worth steeling other than guns and hunting gear. I have to wonder if this is someone close to me shooting there mouth off or possibly neibours watching me come and go on weekends during hunting season and other times just plane target shooting at my dads farm. It sucks living in town because it feels like I have eyes watching me when I come and go with my guns. I'm getting a security alarm installed this upcoming week which will help me sleep easier at night. Just wondering what you guys do to protect your homes and guns from invasion??

I don't think that you were specifically targeted. They hit a whole bunch of houses in Westover last week. Just dirtballs targeting the area in general. Lock your cars, trucks and outbuildings. I would love to come home to someone cleaning out my house. They will "trip and fall" down the back stairs when trying to run away from me. Might even fall down the stairs more than once.

I have a monitored alarm at my house (ADT) with a complete system for burglary and fire consisting of smoke and motion detectors on each level,all doors and windows with glass-break monitors. I found it was more cost-effective to buy my own system and have it installed (included in price) and pay ADT $29/mo+HST for 24/7 monitoring. We can arm only the exterior or Mrs.T likes to arm the entire system if I happen to be away overnight. Piece of mind means a lot,especially for shift workers and empty nesters who are away a lot.

My cousin and her husband were broken into close to where you live about a month ago, farmer drove by with a load of manure and noticed a strange car in the driveway came back later and it was still there so he got in his car and by the time he came back they were just pulling out he gave chase but not worth killing some one over some household items so he gave up. Quick question do you have any stickers on your vehicle that suggest owning or being involved with guns, I took mine off my car but still amazes me how many people have them on their vehicles see the buckmark from browning on tons of trucks and cars but half the people that have them have no idea what it stands for, amusing to say the least. I make sure when I take anything out of my car that no one is walking by or driving by.

I'm also one for this move. Most times it's not leaving in the dark that's the problem. It's coming home during daylight hours dressed in camo and trying to unpack my gear. We aren't too far from a school so I'm always careful there's no little peering eyes around.

I work in the industry and typically crooks will not touch the firearms, it brings to much attention to them by police. So long as they steal house hold goods they don't get any attention from authorities.

With our Canadian laws, falling down your steps (accidentally or not) "Trying to escape" would probably gives you a law suit.... so if they "slip and fall" make sure its a good one. Scum bags...

That's my opinion too....if they were targeting your guns, your dog would be dead and they would have succeeded in getting past your "lock and key''.

Sounds like a bunch of kids looking for stuff they could sell quickly for cash and couldn't be bothered trying to get past your dog.

No I've never put any stickers on my vehicle. When I joined Galt sportsmen club they said that's a big no no.

I have a few trail camera around my house as well. Never know if they get out before police respond to the alarm I hope to have their faces/plate # on camera. Also get to see who's coming and going out of my driveway.

i started putting them out there this spring after my neighbers saw a black truck pulling out of my driveway twice in a week.

This. And they will case a neighbourhood, looking for soft targets. They avoid houses that seem like too much trouble and if they have a few close calls they find a new place to work.

A friend of mine who was living in a house that backed onto an alley in what we'll call a disadvantaged neighbourhood had a series of break-ins and eventually noticed a pattern: all the houses with dogs had a plastic bag tied on the back fence. The kids were going down the alley and marking the houses they wanted to avoid, then coming back later to do the job. Make your house a hard target and they'll hit the next guy.

The one thing on the list I don't think makes much difference is lights. I have security cameras, and a motion sensor light in front of the house that's rated at about 20 kilotons. When it goes on, you can feel your skin peeling off at 75 yards ... despite this, I have all kinds of video of kids walking up my driveway to check if I've locked the car.

And if someone really, really wants your guns ... he's gonna get them.

I'm really worried about this..
Ironically, I know of the 3 fellas who live in the country, who had their guns targeted for removal. One was a successful steal. Since the other two safes were tampered with, I can assume they weren't professionals.
Professionals or not it's disturbing...

I've had a few items stolen from me recently, and it this whole Young offender's act drives me bonkers.
My wife's from south side Chicago, and there hasn't been ONE break in in the past 30 years her folks had lived there...
I wonder why...

I have actually been ridiculed on here but I rarely unload firearms out of my locked vehicle until it's dark. My kids were well drilled to never mention that dad had guns or hunted. You never know who is watching.

I keep my gear in a back pack and my firearms in a black unmarked hard case. I get changed when I get where I'm going simply because it's cooler driving and I'm more comfortable not being all bulked up with gear. I don't worry too much about who sees what because the neighbors all know that I'm a hunter and angler,so,to them,it's no big deal. Travelling to my favorite hunting spots without looking like a hunter doesn't attract attention from law enforcement,either. Visible camo gear and/or blaze orange is R&PG for a vehicle stop and some LEO's get butt pucker if they think they could make a "gun" stop and harrass a hunter. It's not supposed to have a bearing on law enforcement,but,some of them seem to have bought into the BS. The less people know,the better.

Mayor Eisenberger was talking about criminals with guns. Most people know that criminal use of guns by gangbangers shooting up neighborhoods has nothing to do with hunting firearms or hunters,in particular. I'm fairly certain that's the case,here.

The mayor, like many in public office shot his mouth off without thinking about what he said. Numerous letters were written to the editor of the local papers stating that the problem isn't with legal gun owners and that maybe the mayor and the police chief should concentrate on enforcing existing laws.

Politicians are for the most part wh@res who will cater to whoever offers them the best chance of re-election. Conservatives are not immune to this.

Anyone noticed how he qualified Japan's "lowest homicide rate"? Only the lowest where guns were involved.....

I had a break in last October. What a horrible feeling. When I walked in the place was trashed. They opened every possible drawer and cabinet and just threw everything onto the floor. Seemed like they were just looking for cash or anything they could hock for cash really quickly. They even stole the money from my kids piggy banks. Freakin' despicable. I had an alarm system too. As I'm sure you know there is a delay when you come in so that you have time to disarm. My delay was set to 30 seconds. That was way more than enough time for them to make a B line to the panel in the basement and rip the wires out of the system, rendering the alarm useless. I installed a steel frame door that's a lot harder to break down and shortened the delay on my system to 10 seconds. The steel frame door is a lot harder to kick down. With only 10 seconds it would be harder to get to the panel in time to disable it. I didn't have a dog at the time but I do now. I think that a simple bark would be enough to deter a would be burglar. As far as your guns are concerned, Just keep em locked up and out of sight. Once they're in they can do pretty much what they want. All you can do is try to deter or delay them. Unfortunately there are a lot of a-holes in the world. Some of them are your co-workers and neighbors that you shake hands with. You just never know. DTA

Excellent points! It's important that any alarm system be properly configured. An experienced installer knows how to set it up for maximum effeciency. My system is completely wireless on a cell service with a four hour battery back up. The crooks can cut all the wires they want. It'll keep them in one place for the Police to scoop them up. Stoners are dumb as stumps. It's also important to choose an alarm company that dispatches the Police immediately as opposed to some that only dispatch one of their own security guards that shows up a half hour later,sees there's been a B&E and then calls the Police. These type of alarm services are next to useless.

The way they pulled the wires it wouldn't have mattered if I had the cell service in my system. They cut the brain of the system at it's roots. No signal to go anywhere. When I had a look at the panel it's really simple. It's a major flaw in the design of most home alarm systems. Best thing to do would be to put some sort of locked box around the panel covering where they could get at the wires. Anything to delay them long enough for the system to go off. If they can get to it before it goes off the cell service wouldn't matter. The house is theirs. I figured shortening the delay to 10 seconds and locking the door to that room would be enough. I've thought about installing cameras but haven't gotten around to it yet. Wouldn't really stop them anyway. All you have to do is wear a hoodie and glasses or something. Any possible identification would never hold up against the reasonable doubt in a jury's mind in court.

He didn't mention anything about legal or illegal guns. He said that he wanted guns banned and that he doesn't know why anyone would need a gun. Well, the truth is, I don't need a gun. I also don't need a motorcycle. I don't need a car. I don't need a bicycle. I don't need a snowboard. I don't need a cell phone. I don't need a house with a yard. I don't see why anyone would need a Ferrari. I don't know why I need a canoe. No one needs anything other than basic food, clothing and shelter. It seems to me that his vision of the world would be just like Cuba. Beautiful beaches and no one has anything they don't need. We don't have the beaches up here. Can you imagine? I'll move to Baghdad. I know another place that guns are banned; Honduras. Have a look at their gun crime stats. So much for banning legal gun ownership preventing crime.

Store your firearms in a GOOD gun safe & you have no worries...I speak from experience....house broken into...over 15K worth of stuff stolen but gun safes left untouched!

New alarm systems use wireless signals - no wires to rip out. Consider looking at the total home monitoring systems if you're worried and interested in an alarm.

Seriously though. There has to be a power source and that's what they ripped out in my system. If you cut the power source before it goes off no signal goes out. Wireless won't help. Now, if you have some sort of system that sends an alert every time power is interrupted that might work. I would think that type of system would go off a lot though. Any time you had a black out or a brown out, or decided to work on your electrical panel you'd send an alert.

we have a battery back up to are home system ,same for are sump pump .and smoke alarms ..why not it does not cost that much more ,,Dutch

They work as cell phones do - you can get a battery backup for the alarm. Using wireless signals allow the system to function even if the phone lines are cut as well (usually the first thing cut).

What u smoking?gotta get to the unit in the basement to "turn it off" cant just kill the power. ....
I used to install alarm systems for my job. . Now work on fire alarms. .
All burger alarm systems are 12v.. and have a12v back up battery INSIDE the main unit. The unit is usually installed at the breaker panel. (Keypads are not the "brains")
If power is killed to the house/building IMMEDIATLY the back up battery powers the unit. (Keypad will chirp to say no action power) but that is all. . The battery is designed to power the system for a minimum of 24hrs. (Including the cellular part)

You already are better off with a barking dog than an alarm system. Also a Beware of dog or a Guard dog on duty sign in your front door or window is the very best deterent. When theives see those signs they steer clear of those places. Others will say you could be charged if you have those signs and someone gets bit, BS, and those signs keep people away period. I have gone through the exact same thing a few years ago middle of day time, my neighbors even took pics of the guy and his parked vehical with licience plate visable. My German Shephard barking made him leave, but I never had a sign in the front of the house, now I do and people stay away even the door to door idiots trying to sell crap. The police wouldnt even charge the guy because he never actually entered. To bad I wasnt home because he would have had a very bad day.......

My grandparents got broke in 3 times in the years. . Then I Gave them the "premises protected by..." stickers never broke in again. . The neighbors got broke in on each side. Wich worked out god for me as I sold a burg system to the four houses around them...

How did they get to your power source without tripping the alarm? Did they know exactly where in the house your service panel was located? How did they know or,more importantly,who knew which way was the quickest to disable your system? On my system,there's only one door on a seven second time delay. Everything else is alarmed instantly which,once tripped,has two battery back up systems-one for the main alarm,the other for the cell send/receive unit. The crooks can cut all the phone lines and even the Hydro,they're still being tracked as they move through the house. The alarm company can tell the Police exactly where they are in the house or if they've left the premises to look around the neighborhood,but, I have to tell you that if they break in at night and start coming into the bedroom,they ain't leavin'....ever.

As for alarm systems, most use a battery backup not only at the control panel but also in the sensors.

Naw, crossing guards are only 12 bucks an hour or so and meter maids about $80,000. Much better off as a cop with over $90,000 base
and another $40,000 in paid duties.But the court overtime is pretty good if you decide to arrest criminals,but that is really optional.
Actually much better and safer just doing the minimal at work and then saving yourself for paid duties.

Oh man, I wish I had a picture to show you. I have a battery back up too and it was useless. The wires that run from the main power and the battery were ripped out at the panel in the basement. They kicked the door in, made a b line for the panel, and pulled the brain out of the system. They didn't do anything to the key pad. I had all the backups that you guys are talking about and it didn't help. All I did now was shorten the delay so that if it happens again, they won't have time to get to the basement before the system goes off. That, and I had a steel frame door installed. I think the door is the best investment of all. It would not be easy to kick it in anymore. Your "smoking" comment is kinda rude dude. No need to get hostile. My delay was too long and they came in the front door. The delay on the front door was set to 30 seconds. All other entrances are instant. I live in the city in a cookie cutter home. Exactly the same layout as my next door neighbor. His house was broken into just 3 or 4 weeks before mine. All I can guess is that they already knew exactly where to go once they got in. With the long delay it was way more than enough time to get to the basement panel.

They kicked the door in, made a b line for the panel, and pulled the brain out of the system. They didn't do anything to the key pad. I had all the backups that you guys are talking about and it didn't help. All I did now was shorten the delay so that if it happens again, they won't have time to get to the basement before the system goes off. That, and I had a steel frame door installed. I think the door is the best investment of all. It would not be easy to kick it in anymore. Your "smoking" comment is kinda rude dude. No need to get hostile. Just having a friendly discussion here aren't we?

This is a typical home alarm.. a decent install will have the cell module inside this box. Thus box if installed properly should take more than 30 seconds to break into.. UNLESS someone has the key. The keys are common (one key fits all units) also to get to your unit in 30 seconds (Wich BTW is a very common timer) they had to know EXACTLY where your unit is located. You did use a certified installer right? Not some guy you never heard of...?

Boy - I'm sure glad that I don't live in Ontario - it is much safer down here - breakins are rare cause they can and will get shot if they try it - it ain't worth it - getting shot over a TV set - I bet there more breakins and stealing going on per capita up there than down here -

You cannot shoot them if you are not there.

Most breakins are planned and done when nobody is home, home invasions are very rare in this country.

Make it known to your neighbours that you will be away, keep anything that can shelter a breakin cut back (no hendges in front of your front door) and keep things closed and locked.

I guess if you never leave your house like a panic room then you are ok, I don't feel that I live in that sort of situation.

The reason I need a gun is to shoot the groundhogs and rabbits that get into the garden, oh, and in case of bears getting at my livestock.

I wouldn't recommend breaking into Trimmer's house if he were. home . Years of having to restrain himself might explode. :)

Then there's the folk who steal your dog - happened to me.

I live out in the country - have a pretty long driveway and have a chain across it near the road - so nobody drives up to my house - I always make it look like I'm home - if I'm inside and someone walks up from the chain and knocks on the door I don't answer it - that way I see what they are up to - if they happen to break in - SURPRISE -

Some interesting stats - per 100,000 - break and enter - Canada 954 - US 728 - motor vehicle theft - Canada 521 - US 414 - arson Canada 45 - US 32 - so you see - all is almost quiet on the southern front -
